Undated. 4 x 5 inches, in very good condition, some light fold marks, marked ‘Personal, By Hand’ by the King. Royal monogram on envelope flap. King George VI (reigned 1936-1952). Sir Edward Peacock (1871-1962) was made Receiver General to the Duchy of Cornwall, which entailed dealing with the Royal finances, in 1929. For these services, he was knighted by George V in 1934. He was Receiver General until the death of George VI in 1952. Peacock was in Washington, D.C. during World War II, liaising between the United States government and the Bank of England. Just before the war, he and Montagu Norman were asked by Admiral John Henry Godfrey of Naval Intelligence to find him a personal assistant. He found and recruited Ian Fleming, who later wrote the James Bond novels.

Le Rappel, 28 April 1894. In French. 2 pp. 8½ x 5 inches, folds, in good condition. Auguste Vacquerie (1819-1895), French journalist and man of letters. His earlier romantic productions include a volume of poems, L'Enfer de l'esprit (1840); a translation of the Antigone (1844) in collaboration with Paul Meurice; and Tragaldabas (1848), a melodrama. He was one of the principal contributors to the Evenement and followed Hugo into his exile in Jersey. In 1869 he returned to Paris, and with Meurice and others founded the anti-imperial Rappel. His articles in this paper were more than once the occasion of legal proceedings. After 1870 he became editor. Other of his works are Souvent homme varie (1859), a comedy in verse; Jean Baudry (1863), the most successful of his plays; Aujourd'hui et demain (1875); Futura (pub. 1900), and poems on philosophical and humanitarian subjects.

Undated [c.1930]. 10 lines, in French (with separate transcription and translation) on card, folio, in fine condition. Pierre Valdagne (1854-1937), French novelist and dramatist. This presentation statement was prepared for publication in the famous anthology Pax Mundi. Livre D'or De La Paix (Geneva, 1932), which contained numerous autograph facsimile statements about the prospects for World Peace. It was prepared by the World League for Peace with the approval of the League of Nations.

Hotel Bristol, Burlington Gardens, 9 & 19 July 1890. Two oblong cards, 2 x 5 inches, written on both sides, with metallic stickers affixed, reading ILLUSION. With an original envelope, forwarded from Buckingham Palace to Harley Street (second stamp affixed, postage due charge deleted). Jean Marie Constantin Joseph "Jan" van Beers (1852 – 1927), Belgian painter and illustrator, the son of the poet Jan van Beers. They are sometimes referred to as Jan van Beers the elder and Jan van Beers the younger. In 1884, Jan Van Beers produced the pen-and-ink sketches for the edition de luxe of his father's poetry. he became the leader of a group of young artists, the "Van Beers clique." This group included the artists Piet Verhaert (1852–1908), Alexander Struys (1852–1941), and Jef Lambeaux (1852–1908). They were well known for their mischievous and eccentric behaviour, including walking around Antwerp dressed in historic costumes.

Liverpool, 11 December 1825. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, in good condition. Uncommon. Nicolas Marie Alexandre Vattemare (1796–1864), also known under the stage name Monsieur Alexandre, was a French ventriloquist and philanthropist who created the first international system for the exchange of items among libraries and museums. Around age seven, Vattemare discovered a talent for ventriloquism and the ability to imitate sounds. He trained as a surgeon, but was refused a diploma after making cadavers seem to speak during surgical exercises. At age 18 he was placed in charge of some 300 to 400 typhus-afflicted Prussian prisoners of war, and in 1814, the soldiers asked that he accompany them to Berlin. Facing economic problems in Berlin, he decided to earn money as a ventriloquist, performing under the stage name Monsieur Alexandre. Robert Vaughan (1795–1868), Congregationalist minister, Professor of History in the University of London, 1830–43, and President of the Independent College, Manchester, 1843-57. He founded, and for a time edited the British Quarterly. He wrote, among various other works, A History of England under the Stuarts, Revolutions of race in English history, Revolutions of History, and a Life of Wycliffe. “Our friend Carleton is a treasure of all treasures ... but beyond him the land does not teem with wisdom, and still less with men willing to give time to our affairs.”

Emile Verhaeren (1855-1916), Belgian poet who wrote in the French language, and one of the chief founders of the school of Symbolism. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature six times. He was one of the most prolific poets of his era. His first collection of poems, Les Flamandes, was published in 1883. Inspired by the paintings of Jacob Jordaens, David Teniers and Jan Steen, Verhaeren described in a direct and often provocative, naturalistic way his country and the Flemish people.

Lancaster Place, Strand, 24 January 1900. 2 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, fine. Hermann Vezin (1829-1910) was an American actor, born in Philadelphia, and educated at the University of Pennsylvania. He went to England at York and obtained and engagement there in 1850. His London début was made at the Princess's Theatre in 1852. Most of his acting was performed in England. He acted in Dr. Davey (1866); Man o' Airlie (1867); Son of the Soil (1872); As You Like It (1875); Daniel Druce, which ran for one hundred and six times at the Haymarket (1876); and Olivia (1878). He became known as a teacher of elocution and as a writer.

She performed in London as late as 1870. In 1871, she was obliged, as the wife of a Frenchman, to leave Germany where she had settled in 1863.

R.M.S. Carisbrook Castle, undated. 3 pp. 8 x 5 inches, in good condition. Frederic Brooks Dugdale VC (1877-1902). He was 23 years old, and a lieutenant in the 5th Lancers (Royal Irish), British Army during the Second Boer War when the following deed took place on 3 March 1901 near Derby, South Africa for which he was awarded the VC. On 3rd March, 1901, Lieutenant Dugdale, who was in command of a small outpost near Derby, having been ordered to retire, his patrol came under a heavy fire at a range of about 250 yards, and a Sergeant, two men, and a horse were hit. Lieutenant Dugdale dismounted and placed one of the wounded men on his own horse; he then caught another horse, galloped up to a wounded man and took him up behind him, and brought both men safely out of action. Annotated by Grey on verso, and dated 15 December 1868. 3½ x 8½ inches, part of the flap torn away, Windsor Castle crest remaining on verso, mounted on an album leaf, her crest (from other correspondence) mounted above. Uncommon. Victoria, Princess Royal (1840 –1901) was the eldest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She was created Princess Royal of the United Kingdom in 1841. She became German Empress and Queen of Prussia by marriage to German Emperor Frederick III. After her husband's death, she became widely known as Empress Frederick.
