Description:
Undated. 4 x 5 inches, in very good condition, some light fold marks, marked ‘Personal, By Hand’ by the King. Royal monogram on envelope flap. King George VI (reigned 1936-1952). Sir Edward Peacock (1871-1962) was made Receiver General to the Duchy of Cornwall, which entailed dealing with the Royal finances, in 1929. For these services, he was knighted by George V in 1934. He was Receiver General until the death of George VI in 1952. Peacock was in Washington, D.C. during World War II, liaising between the United States government and the Bank of England. Just before the war, he and Montagu Norman were asked by Admiral John Henry Godfrey of Naval Intelligence to find him a personal assistant. He found and recruited Ian Fleming, who later wrote the James Bond novels.

This presentation statement was prepared for publication in the famous anthology Pax Mundi. With an original envelope, forwarded from Buckingham Palace to Harley Street (second stamp affixed, postage due charge deleted). Jean Marie Constantin Joseph "Jan" van Beers (1852 – 1927), Belgian painter and illustrator, the son of the poet Jan van Beers. They are sometimes referred to as Jan van Beers the elder and Jan van Beers the younger. In 1884, Jan Van Beers produced the pen-and-ink sketches for the edition de luxe of his father's poetry. he became the leader of a group of young artists, the "Van Beers clique." This group included the artists Piet Verhaert (1852–1908), Alexander Struys (1852–1941), and Jef Lambeaux (1852–1908). They were well known for their mischievous and eccentric behaviour, including walking around Antwerp dressed in historic costumes.

Liverpool, 11 December 1825. In English. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, in good condition. Uncommon. Nicolas Marie Alexandre Vattemare (1796–1864), also known under the stage name Monsieur Alexandre, was a French ventriloquist and philanthropist who created the first international system for the exchange of items among libraries and museums. Around age seven, Vattemare discovered a talent for ventriloquism and the ability to imitate sounds. He trained as a surgeon, but was refused a diploma after making cadavers seem to speak during surgical exercises. At age 18 he was placed in charge of some 300 to 400 typhus-afflicted Prussian prisoners of war, and in 1814, the soldiers asked that he accompany them to Berlin. Facing economic problems in Berlin, he decided to earn money as a ventriloquist, performing under the stage name Monsieur Alexandre. Emile Verhaeren (1855-1916), Belgian poet who wrote in the French language, and one of the chief founders of the school of Symbolism. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature six times. He was one of the most prolific poets of his era. His first collection of poems, Les Flamandes, was published in 1883. Inspired by the paintings of Jacob Jordaens, David Teniers and Jan Steen, Verhaeren described in a direct and often provocative, naturalistic way his country and the Flemish people.

Marlborough House, 13 January 1885. A good one page example, 7 x 4 inches, with an integral blank leaf. Major General Sir Christopher Charles Teesdale VC KCMG CB (1833 –1893) was the first South African-born recipient of the Victoria Cross, awarded for gallantry at Kars in 1855. Teesdale was wounded at the battle of Kars, taken prisoner and held in Russia until he was released in 1856. He was awarded the Légion d'honneur and made an Honorary CB in the same year. A talented water colourist, he was responsible for illustrations in book on Battle of Kars by Humphry Sandwith, MD, the regiment's doctor at Kars. The illustrations were possibly done whilst Teesdale was in captivity. He was decorated with the VC by Queen Victoria in the quadrangle of Windsor Castle on 21 November 1857. Sir Frederick Young KCMG (1817 –1913) was a British traveller and writer on imperial affairs.

R.M.S. Carisbrook Castle, undated. 3 pp. 8 x 5 inches, in good condition. Frederic Brooks Dugdale VC (1877-1902). He was 23 years old, and a lieutenant in the 5th Lancers (Royal Irish), British Army during the Second Boer War when the following deed took place on 3 March 1901 near Derby, South Africa for which he was awarded the VC. On 3rd March, 1901, Lieutenant Dugdale, who was in command of a small outpost near Derby, having been ordered to retire, his patrol came under a heavy fire at a range of about 250 yards, and a Sergeant, two men, and a horse were hit. Lieutenant Dugdale dismounted and placed one of the wounded men on his own horse; he then caught another horse, galloped up to a wounded man and took him up behind him, and brought both men safely out of action.
