Description:
Washington DC: The Evening Star Newspaper Co.. 1974. Newspaper. 58 pages; Whole issue, 15 cent price under Masthead. By tradition, Washington's old "Evening Star" was an afternoon paper, and this "HOME FINAL" edition bears a date one day earlier than the more famous Washington Post issue devoted to this event (August 9, 1974). The Star was an older paper than the Post, having been founded in 1852. But after a century of dominance of the Washington market, the Star was in decline by 1974. It is interesting to note that it failed by one day to survive another seven years after this issue hit the streets. It had been the original journalistic home to columnist Mary McGrory, cartoonist Clifford K. Berryman, and also Carl Bernstein, who played a major role as a Post writer, along with Bob Woodward, in bringing about the downfall of the Nixon Administration. Happily, both men are alive and active today, just over 50 years after the initial break in at the Watergate… Read More
