Padova: N.p., 1780. Tall 4to. 314 x 220 mm. (12 ¼ x 8 ½ inches). xvi pp. Illustrated with an engraved title-page depicting an architectural city gate, an engraved head and tail piece signed Jac. Tirabosco, and an engraved initial letter. Original marbled paper paste paper boards. First edition. An unusual and not doubt rare poem dedicated to Pietro Manin, who was at the end of his tenure as governor of the city and province of Padua. Alvise Vallaresso was the author a number of short eulogies and poetic fete books, which he wrote exclusively for luminaries of city of Padua. The engravings are done by a local artist and although a little primitive in style are nicely rendered. Not cited in NUC or OCLC, 4 copies cited in ICCU. Not in Morazzoni.

Davis, and woodcut head and tail pieces, initial letters, and printer's ornaments throughout.  Bound in contemporary calf, gilt diamond decoration in the center of both boards, single fillet gilt boarder, leather label; expertly rebacked, some scrapes and staining to the boards; with original marbled papers.  With faults a good sound copy. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1872. 8vo.  pp. 481 - 501.  Illustrated with wood engravings, including a map of Venice, four full-page architectural views, and nine wood engravings in the text.  Original printed wrappers, chipped at spine but a sound an not unattractive copy. Anonymous twenty page description of Venice which captures for the American public the history and romance of La Serenissima, including images of the most famous palazzi the Doge's Palace.  This issue of the Magazine also includes a biography of Edgar Allan Poe, an essay on the political character of modern Greeks, and the concluding chapter of Anthony Trollope's The Golden Lion of Granpere, to name a few of the articles.

Two parts in one volume, each with separate title-page.  Small folio.  295 x 210 mm., [11 ½ x 8 ¼ inches].  23 [1] pp., 12pp.  First part illustrated with 5 folding plates.  Bound in full contemporary vellum, spine with minor tear in lower portion, some modest soiling to the vellum, otherwise a very good copy. King Louis I of Spain, died seven months into his reign at the age of 17.  He had been hastily married to the Louise Elizabeth d' Orleans after his father Phillip V abdicated his thrown in an attempt become king of France.  The young king died of small pox, had no heirs and fewer accomplishments.  This very attractive fete book, commemorating the ceremonies surrounding the death of Louis I was organized as a courtesy to his mother, Elisabetta Farnese of Parma, wife of Phillip V and Queen of Spain.  The first part contains an oration by Niccolò Venuti, a member of the Order of San Stefano and an antiquarian… Read More

First American edition.  Originally published in 1884, Verga's nine stories of village life in rural Sicily is, "in many ways the most interesting of Verga books" (Lawrence).  This edition carries the longest and most detailed preface to appear in the three Verga books that he translated.  Not just a synopsis of the stories, Lawrence provides a modernest critique to Verga's work and places his writing in the context of  world literatures.

New York: Thomas Seltzer, 1923. 8vo.  [12], 454 pp.  Original orange cloth, title-lable on upper board and spine; cloth a bit soiled, spine faded; missing dust jacket. First American edition.  Verga's last major work of fiction, originally appearing in 1888.  Lawrence writes, "Basing their judgement on the two novels, I Malavoglio and Mastro-don Gerualdo, together with the books of Sicilian sketches, practically all serious critic regard Giovanni Verga as the greatest of Italian writers of fiction; always excepting Manzoni.

New York: Grove Press, 1953. 8vo.  226 pp.  Original cloth, dust jacket; jacket with creasing along the folds at the spine and tips, minor loss at the head and tail of spine. First American edition.  Called by Lawrence "the greatest writer of Italian fiction, after Manzoni",  these twelve stories of Sicily in the 19th century capture the texture of the lives of Sicilian peasants and the enviroment in which they live their lives.

Perugia: Presso la Tipografia Baduel, 1820.  8vo. viii, 209 pp.  Later 19th century cloth spine over marbled paper board, original front wrapper bound-in.  With the book label of Tammaro De Marinis.  Second edition,originally published in 1806 in only 66 pages.   Vermiglioli's Principj begins with a lengthy history of the origins of printing in Perugia, followed by descriptions of 21 books printed during the incunable period. Each entry is well described with considerable annotations referring to these publications.  This is the second bibliography of printing in Perugia, Pietro Brandolese published research in 1807 listing 18 incunable editions.  The final nine pages of the book contains a list of works published by the author, who was a member of the faculty at Perugia and director of the Museo Antiquario. Bassano: Tipografia Remondiniana, 1807. 8vo. 215 x 135 mm., (8 ½ x 5 1/4/inches).  91 pp.  19th century decorated stiff paper wrappers from Remondini.  With the ex-libris of Tammaro De Marinis.  Very nice copy Rare history of printing in the Piedmont, based on his short essays published in 1778 and 1787 under the title, Lezione Sopra la Stampa, but greatly expanded.  It is the first work of its kind to focus on Piedmont printing and it was published over 100 years before Francesco Cosintini's work was published in Torino in 1914.  Vernazza includes biographies of Jean Glim and Christophe Beggiamo, early printers in the Piedmont. (Winchester, Va.), 1833. Broadside 4to. 290 x 160 mm., [11 ¼ x 6 ¼ inches].   Printed in two columns, signed in type by Charles J. Faulkner at Winchester, dated March 8, 1833, at conclusion. Lightly dust-soiled, pale stain affecting perhaps one-third of the left-hand margin and column of text. Neatly silked on verso. Withal, about very good. Following the August, 1831, Nat Turner rebellion in Southampton County, a last effort was made by moderate Virginians to gradually abolish slavery. Faulkner, a 26-year-old lawyer and assemblyman, along with Thomas Jefferson Randolph, sponsored legislation to free all children born of slave parents after July 4, 1840.
