Description:
Sarajevo: J. Studnicka & Co, 1918. First Edition. Unbound. Very good. N.d. (before 1918). Large oblong octavo (19 x 26 cm). Complete suite of 12 color plates of scenes and costumes. Original blue cloth portfolio, ties lacking. Rare Pre-WWI portfolio of Sarajevo Costumes and Views -- its survival is a small miracle given the outcome of the First and Second World Wars, not only in Bosnia and Germany but also in Czechoslovakia. The harrowing ordeal that ensued in Sarajevo in the early 1990s virtually insured that all combustible materials were used for heating fuel. Thus it is no surprise to find that the portfolio is not listed in Worldcat (although there is a copy at Princeton). * This is an outstanding pictorial work of Sarajevo costume, scenery, social life and customs; the plates were printed in color by Graph. Kunstanstalt M. Schulz, in Prague. We have seen mention of another publication by J. Studnicka & Co. in Sarajevo dated 1898. We can date the portfolio before 1918 owing to the publisher's… Read more

Description:
Basileae (Basel): Thomas Guarinus, 1575. First Edition. Small 4to. [8], 185, [23] pp. Modern vellum, red and white mottled edges. Old shelf-mark (?) "4069" in ink on title. Light foxing throughout. Overall very good. "All Things Burgundian." This early and impressive Renaissance chronicle of Burgundy covers the years 408 to 1482 and presents key events in tabular form. That copies of this work were in the libraries of Isaac Newton (cf. John Harrison, No. H1687) and Horace Walpole (Strawberry Hill sale, 26 April 1842, Case E, group lot 8) attests to its significance. According to the author, the present work was composed with the aid of hitherto unpublished manuscripts; among these must have been the Chronica Regum Visigothorum or Leges Visigothorum: in the list of authors and "monumental works" consulted is the reference to the "Vuisigothorii (sic) Chronicon manuscriptum." "The only writer who dealt with the later history in a really critical spirit was Nicolas Vignier (1530-96), whose critical… Read more

Description:
Richmond (?) Virginia, 1787. Unbound. Very good. Document printed on vellum and completed in manuscript. Signed by then-Lieutenant Governor of Virginia Beverley Randolph (29 May 1787). Size: 15" x 12" (worn along folds, affecting legibility of one line of manuscript text, soiled); traces of red wax seal. On verso in MS: "Owen Jarrett 172 Acres Greenbrier County." A little known Colonial Virginia imprint, of which no example appear to be in UVA. The document attests to the receipt by the Treasury of the Commonwealth of Virginia "for consideration of the Ancient Composition of One Pound Sterling, paid by one Owen Jarrett into the Treasure of the Commenwealth." The payment is for "adjusting the titles to compensate lands in the District of Augusta, Botetourt and Greenbrier." The 172 acres in question was located in Greenbrier County (in present-day West Virginia) and bounded by Muddy Creek. The life of Owen Jarrett (born 1760/1761 in Berkshire County, Pennsylvania, died 1859 [sic] in Kanawha County,… Read more
