Great reading! Very rare First English Edition, published in 1814 by Henry Colburn, London. First published in German, then this English edition, then French. This book has definitely been read and enjoyed many times but still presents a handsome façade. Large book, 421 pages, a newer leather spine laid over original 3/4 leather with marbled boards, new endpapers. Original part of the cover shows a lot of wear, scuffing, and fading, older leather corners rubbed and chipped. Spine looks almost new. Small library stamps on title and copyright pages. Title page has a couple tears that have been patched with pieces of clear tape, title page and about thirty following pages have creases, light foxing and occasional mold spots on pages, some light age-toning, p. 295 has a tear patched with paper. All pages very readable. A good, solid very rare copy of this classic ethnographic and linguistic exploration of a very intriguing part of the world.
