Paris, Académie des Sciences, 1875-1878. 4to (27.9 x 21.6 cm). 19 [4, 2, 4, 4, 2, 3] pp. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. = A suite of five papers by Vaillant on fish systematics, and one on reptiles (in particular on a crocodile species) with Vaillant as junior author. Two of the fish papers contain criticism of the work of Agassiz. All were published in the Comptes Rendus of the academy of sciences of Paris, and these are all offprints. The spine gives as partial title "Fish papers. Le Vaillant. Steind.", but other papers, not by Vaillant, have been removed. A good set. Rare. Dean II, p. 571

Later marbled boards with gilt title on the spine. = The seldom-seen thesis of the French zoologist Léon Vaillant (1834-1914). Vaillant became one of the leading French ichthyologists and herpetologists, however, this work is botanical. Dedicated to the botanist Émile-Victor Mussat, the zoologist Alphonse Milne-Edwards, and others. A broad-margined copy. Title page a bit toned; some foxing to the plates; otherwise a very good, unmarked copy in an attractive binding. Pritzel 9653; Stafleu and Cowan, 15745.

This includes a great deal of criticism of the works of Louis Agassiz, perhaps beyond the point of being reasonable. Published in the Muséum's Bulletin des Nouvelles Archives, volume IX. Uncut. Later quarter linen over printed boards. = A very important and rare monograph on the natural history of South America, being the results of years of travels and collecting by one of the foremost 19th-century French naturalists, the explorer, geographer, anthropologist, palaeontologist, zoologist, and botanist, Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (1802-1857). Entirely based on his own collections and researches. This part dealing with fish - both marine and fresh water. D'Orbigny wrote most of the results of his collections and observations himself, but in this case he handed the material to a true specialist, the great French ichthyologist Achille Valenciennes (1794-1865). The species covered show a wide variaty in shape and colour. New genus and species level taxa are included. Uncut. Some light wear to wrapper edges. Spines with gilt titles. = A rare fine, bound set of this important monograph on the reptiles of California and adjacent regions, dealing with a zoogeographical rather than a geopolitical unit. This is the magnum opus of the American herpetologist John Van Denburgh (1872-1924). According to Adler, "As Holbrook's 'North American Herpetology' (1842) did for eastern North America, Van Denburgh's magnum opus 'The Reptiles of Western North America,' in two large volumes (1922), laid the foundation for the present-day herpetological studies in the American West". The illustrations - on glossy paper - and descriptions are excellent, and so are these copies: without any markings whatsoever. Neatly bound, which is rather exceptional. Text in Dutch with both Dutch and Latin names. Boards rubbed, book block split with two gatherings nearly detached, otherwise a very good copy. Much rarer than the 1914 edition.

Spine with gilt lines and gilt title on brown morocco label. = This is the rare first, Latin, edition of the work on intestinal worms by the Frisian physician Murk van Phelsum (1730-1779) which, much later in 1781-1782, was republished in German as "Naturgeschichte der Springwürmer". Rubbing to spine, old weak, cancelled library stamp on verso of title, another small stamp on on front free endpaper; some foxing in the beginning and some age toning, otherwise a very good copy. Broadsheet. 43.1 x 33.6 (print size 39.2 x 31.0 cm) = The Death of the Virgin ranks amongst Rembrandt's most impressive and typical etchings, especially among his works dealing with scenes from the New Testament. "About 1628 Rembrandt made his first etchings. Unlike drawing, etching is not a natural counterpart to painting, and his decision to begin etching meant taking a significant new direction in his career. Much of his international fame during his lifetime would be based on the widely disseminated prints he produced from the 300 or so etchings he made over the course of his career.
