Jean Foy Vaillant is considered to be the outstanding numismatic scholar of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century not only in France but throughout Europe. Description:
New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 2000. First Edition, First Printing. Wraps. Very Good+. 1 vol. (560 p.) : ill. ; 26 cm. Softcover. Book condition: spine a little slanted, tiny creases here and there else fine. Five hundred and fifty four artists are represented, often with multiple representations of their work. Possibly the book to get if you could only have a single MOMA publication; they've opened up their permanent collection and brought a big chunk of it into the light. A nice copy; MOMA's usual practice in situations such as this is to farm out the hardcover publishing (in this case to Thames & Hudson in London for European distribution and Abrams in the U.S. for hardcover distribution in the states) and we find ourselves chosing the softcover more often than not. Maybe our imagination but we think it is noticeable which of the two reflects the more artfully produced choice. Published in accordance with the Exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, September 28, 2000-January 30, 2001.

Uses an innovative book format in order to present a remarkable artists' section called "Draw Me a Sheep." (borrowing its title from Antoine de Saint-Exup√©ry's "The Little Prince") the "Draw Me a Sheep." section is a collection of individual artist pages done as a series of four-panel "poster" foldouts. Fine aquatint frontispiece portrait of Talleyrand. Condition: Very Good+ with mild wear to extremities and along outer surface of joints, assorted small areas of darkening to leather; interior bright, free of any foxing and unmarred. Nice copies. Translated from the original French. Though not definitive, the 1834 London edition published by Edward Churton is generally considered to be the true first edition, preceding the 1834 Philadelphia edition published by Carey, Lea and Blanchard. K√∂ln, Germany: J.P. Bachem, 1996. Aufl edition (1996). Hardcover. Very Good+/None Issued. 96 pp. Chiefly illustrations. 29 cm. Tall 4to. Hardcover. Photo illustrated boards. In 1970 the prolific German photographer Chargesheimer published the book "K√∂ln 5uhr30". "Chargesheimer's K√∂ln 5 Uhr 30 marks a crucial turning point in the history of European photobooks. Fascinated by the look of early morning, deserted streets, Chargesheimer here portrays his native Cologne in folio photogravure plates that convey a "vaguely sinister atmosphere... Chargesheimer created a rigorous formal framework for this book, determined by the steep perspective generated by the wide- angle lens and the fact that every image is vertical" (Parr & Badger I:223) Twenty five years later Wolfgang Vollmer retraced the now deceased Chargesheimer's steps and produced this book; K√∂ln 1970-1995, 37 pairs of full page b&w plates . Chargeshiemer's 1970 photograph verso, Vollmer's 1995 photograph recto (same lensing, camera position,… Read more

Munich: Droemersche Verlagsanstalt th. Knaur Nachf, 1969. Reprint. Hardcover. Very Good +/Good +. 360pp. 8to. (23cm). Oatmeal coloured cloth over boards, olive green lettering. (Beautiful book btw). We acquired this book because the dust jacket (good+ condition: bit tattered at the edges) has a kind of demented Semitic looking(not in a good way) Christmas elf hovering on the top left corner of the jacket and that elf is holding some 1x2's in a way that suggests violence. There's also a pretty complicated book-binding project featured on the same front panel and that demented-elf-book-binding-project combination was way too much to resist. A collector of striking graphic dust jackets from Germany would do well to consider this offering. A closer look at the contents of the book reveal that , if all civilization were to be destroyed tomorrow, with this one volume one would have the clear - illustrated - explained-in-German step by steps to make just about anything worth making. So you survivalists… Read more
