London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, & Orme, 1810. Disbound. Good binding. Octavo. iv, 252 pp. Third edition. Removed fro nonce volume; backed in paper. Some chipping to the margin in a few places; soiling to the first and last leaf; generally solid; six-digit number stamped at the top of the title page; a few instances throughout the text of a rubber stamp institutional stamp, now defunct. An explanation of the tyranny that Napoleonic bureaucracy imposed upon the empire, with an especial focus on the oppressive tax system. The author was a leading Catholic-American literary critic, founder of the first American quarterly, the American Review of History and Politics, and founder and editor of the American Quarterly Review. This extensive pamphlet draws on Walsh's three years of travel and study in France and Britain as a young man. It was republished in England and Lord Jeffrey said of it, in the Edinburgh Review (1853, p. 799), "We must learn to love the Americans when they send us such book as this"… Read More

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1930. Vellum Binding. Very Good+ binding/near Good dust jacket. Folio. [10], 124 pp., frontis, illus. Limited edition, number 359 of 450 copies. Signed by Adams. As issued, in vellum-backed marbled paper boards with glassing jacket and box. The binding is very bright and well preserved; contents are clean; glassing wrapper is worn at the extremities, but for some minor chipping, it is largely complete. The lidded box, on the other hand, is in pieces and missing one of the rails; nevertheless, mostly present. It appears to have done its job in protecting the book. A beautifully reprinting of the text of the first edition of Walton's classic, possibly the highlight of fishing literature. The pages are graced with numerous black-and-white decorations in addition to a color frontispiece and nice scenes of gentlemen fishing done in elegantly muted shades of green, blue, and brown by American artist Frank Adams, known for his children's illustrations. Richmond: Davis Bottom, 1925. Hard Cover. Very Good+ binding/Very Good+ dust jacket. Octavo. [2], 346 pp. First edition. In original maroon cloth with title in gold on the front cover and spine; with publisher's plain brown wrapper. Spine sunned a bit, otherwise, remarkably bright; penciled at the top of the title page is "Mrs Watson," uncertain as to whether this was a copy pulled aside for her or this note is indicative of something or someone else; beyond this, contents are clean; publisher's wrapper is without wear and now in a mylar protector. Remarkably uncommon, thus. Watson made the acquaintance of John S. Mosby in Mosby's latter years and recounts some of Mosby's pointed reminiscences on a number of Confederates, but especially of Robert E. Lee. Quite a bit of Confederate history is included.

Description:
1791. 9" x 7.5." Writing on recto and verso. Near fine. A very nice example of an ALS by General Anthony Wayne. Wayne was an instrumental part of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, entering the fray as a colonel and at the conclusion of war, a major general. It is difficult to overstate Wayne's contribution to the American cause. After the war he served two years in Pennsylvania General Assembly and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. In 1791 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Georgia, serving in that role until his death in 1796. Interestingly, this letter addressing a financial matter was written the day he took his seat in Congress. One might imagine he was using his new position to put some additional authority behind his request. This letter appears to be addressed to Congressman Joseph Clay. Oxford American National Biography. Transcribed in full: "Savannah 4th March 1791 / Dear Sir / I was favored with yours of the 2nd inst. inclosing an… Read More
