Description:
London: Henry Herringman, 1682. Fourth Edition. Later half calf over marbled boards, title-label; fore-edge of t.p. strengthened at edge; occasional soiling, stains and foxing; missing portrait but with later portrait glued in. In all very good.. Dryden, who greatly admired Waller and consistently treated him as mentor and precursor, claimed that 'the well-placing of words, for the sweetness of pronunciation, was not known till Mr. Waller introduced it'" Chernaik, DNB. "When neo-classical canons of correctness fell out of fashion in the nineteenth century, Waller's poetic reputation plummeted, and it has never fully recovered." Id. 8vo. [12], 289pp., [1]. Description:
New York: MacMillan & Co, 1893. First Edition. Very good with light wear to the covers, which remain bright.. Bears the signature and bookplate of Eugene Field. However, as with many books bearing Field's signature, same could be that of Eugene Field's son, Eugene Field Jr., who worked with accomplice Harry Dayton Sickles in "enlarging" his father's library, adding provenance by forging his father's signature. Field Jr. was never charged, and his forgeries are now collectible in their own right.
