London: Kearsley, 1794. 2 volumes bound as one. 8vo., pp. viii, 186, [viii]; [ii], 168, [x] + 4 plates, including engraved frontispiece to each volume. Errata slip bound in at rear. Plates a little toned with some slight transfer to adjacent pages but generally bright and clean. Contemporary vellum, gilt spine with gilt title label, delicate gilt border to each board, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. A little grubby but still a handsome copy. Bookplate of John Sparrow (1905-1992) to front paste-down. Sparrow was a barrister, essayist, bibliophile and for 25 years Warden of All Souls College, Oxford. 'A very elegant and correct edition, ornamented with plates; the type is clear and beautiful.' Dibdin. Londini: impensis Kearsley, 1796. First edition thus. 2 vols., 8vo., pp. [iv], 274, [xxxiv]; [ii], 301, [xxv]. Very occasional light spotting but generally clean and bright internally. Contemporary red straight-grain morocco by Kalthoeber, spines with raised bands and a simple gilt flower tool to four of the six compartments (the others containing title and volume number), plain gilt borders with tiny corner tools, a.e.g., Greek key gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers. Spines slightly darkened, endcaps rubbed, joints rubbed with a few very small areas peeling, corners worn. Still a very good, attractive set. Bookplate of Richard Hungerford Pollen with his family crest. This is likely Richard Pollen (1786–1838), a gentleman of Rodbourne in Wiltshire. Slight age browning, occasional marginal foxing or dust-soiling, a bit heavier to last few leaves. Contemporary polished calf, rebacked with onlaid original spine, marbled endpapers, double gilt ruled, gilt-lettered morocco label, a.e.r., a little loss to onlaid spine. The odd marginal annotation; 20th-century ownership inscription to fly. An elegantly bound copy of this important collection, first published in 1848, of the writings of major Latin poets, including Catullus, Tibullus, Virgil, Persius and Claudianus, and a 'Supplementum in Virgilium' with his 'Ciris', 'Catalecta' and 'Copa'. The author, William Sidney Walker (1795-1846), was professor of Greek at Trinity College, Cambridge, and an important classicist, as well as a Shakespearean critic.

Occasional light yellowing, first and last few leaves slightly foxed. Original publisher's cloth, richly gilt. Dedication to Miss Charrington Wood by R. Thomson dated 1909 to fly. The first illustrated edition of this novel on a journey in Ireland of the fictional Penelope, with wood-engravings by C.E. Brock. Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923), a pioneering American educator and author of numerous children's novels. The Mrs Charrington Wood to whom this copy was donated is probably the same portrayed much later, in a photograph of 1951, protesting in London with other ladies against poor quality coal.

The first edition of this 'topographical' history of the Waldenses to the 19th century, narrated through a journey undertaken by the author through Piedmont, their place of origin. The author, Rev.
