Collation: xx, 563, [1-publisher] pp. 22 maps (one a colored frontispiece) and 4 diagrams. Text in very good condition. Pencil marks for several insects and mammals in section on Philippines provided by W. E. Clarke. These were most likely made by Clarke whose copy this is.Provenance: Tipped in card at front : "With the Author's Compliments" and three ALS from Wallace to W. E. Clarke tipped in behind title page. The first letter ( May 31st 1901) is a request from Wallace to Dr. Clarke to ask him for the "total number of species (of birds in the Philippines) now known, to correct the statement at p. 388 of my 'Island Life', of which I am preparing a new addition." Göttengen: J. C. Dieterich, 1787. Half Calf. Very Good +. Folio (39.2 x 24.6 cm) Large paper copy bound in later half calf and marble boards. Collation: [2], [iii]-xlv, [1 Err.], [1]-124, [8] pp. + 31 (3 folding) engraved plates. The present half calf binding replaced the original green-paper boards. The new binding has raised bands and gilt decorated panels with brief gilt title and author stamped into red morocco label in upper panel. The boards and corners are in very good condition. There is upper edge paper repair to front free end paper and title page, presumably replacing removed early ownership information. The text proper including the half title not mentioned by Sabin is very clean and bright. The personal circular stamp of previous owner (Inz. Mgr. M. Kubiak) is in the blank area of the fore edge on p. xxxix and the lower right corner of Tab. III. A fine rare and attractive manuscript of science course notes, probably following the natural philosophy course of Robert Eden Scott of King's College Aberdeen (1769-1811), and offering insight into the teaching of physics at the height of the Industrial Revolution. Contemporary green cloth binding with author's initials in gilt on front cover; tooling on covers with dates in gilt; title on spine; minor wear to corners and ends of spine. Collation: [74] pp. with numerous drawings and text in fine calligraphic style + original title page in floral Art Nouveau style with scrolling lily-pad plants and flowers in watercolor washes of pink, brown, yellow and green. Fine cursive French script in black ink is on verso facing illustrated diagrams and calculations on recto of next page, all within ruled borders. This is a fine notebook on geometry and calculating angles, surface area and perspective for a comprehensive set of shapes. From the collection of "Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs' in the 'Section des jeunes filles," and signed by director on front fly leaf and dated 27 July 1902.

Collation: Vol. 1 & xvi, 416 p. + 3 color plates and 95 in text illustrations; Vol. 2- [vi] 405 [1] [2] 4 p. + in text illustrations no. 96 & 131. There is some wear to ends of spines and corners. The front free end papers have embossed institutional stamp that is also present on title page. The text is in very good condition with minor pencil annotations and some pencil notes on recto of rear free end page of volume 2. The notes are probably from prior owner, Arthur Dendy, whose name is on half title in volume 1. (There is evidence that Dendy's name was also on half title in volume 2 but erased.) Translation from German text.

Nuremberg: Paulus Fürstens, 1672. Contemporary vellum. Very Good. 4to(18.0 x 13.7 cm) 2 parts in 1 vol. Contemporary vellum on stiff boards. Plain spine. Soiling to spine and boards. Collation: [xii], 88pp.+17 (1 duplicate) engraved plates and engraved frontispiece; [2]3-74pp. with text table: Tabula Inscribendae Horologiis Dierum Lonfitudinis. In this two part work Welper in the first part of this two part work describes the process and illustrates details for quadrant and instruments for measuring circle of declination. The second by Sturm provides additional mathematical information and instructions in use of horizontal and vertical dials. Both Sturm and Welper were Swiss mathematicians; Sturm more notable as teacher of as teacher of Johann Gabriel Doppelmair who was responsible for works on astronomy, cartography, and sun dials. Dopplemair also translated a number of texts into German from original Latin, making them more accessible to wider audience in Germany.

The engraved plates illustrate minerals and plants that are used for preparing medicinal treatments.

The binding is in very good condition with slight wear to covers and hinges (occasional breaks). The title, author and publisher are in gilt on spine. Gilt vignette on cover illustrates travelers loading snow sled with resting dogs. Internal condition of book is very good and without marks. The title page has embossed stamp of presentation from publisher. "This is one of the best works produced on the Russian-American Overland Telegraph Expedition of 1865-66. Whymper joined the expedition at Vancouver, sketching and recording his experiences at Sitka, St. Michael, Pertropavlovsk, Anadyr River, and at Nulato and on the Yukon. Whymper's account, and his artwork, constitute one of the most significant contributions to Alaska description of this period." (Haycox, Alaska Biblio. P. 254).

The text has numerous geometrical diagrams, engravings, figures and a few tables to assist reader in doing survey analyses on land and sea. Spine and upper region of both boards are sunned. Author, title and publisher are present on the spine in separate panels created by blind stamped bands. There is fraying of clothe at the top of the spine and top of rear board. There are institutional markings on front paste down, title page, and last page of text.

Speckled calf covers with parallel gilt border; spine with raised bands; red leather label with title in gilt. Panels with parallel gilt lines along bands. Ends of spine are chipped, more so at top. Hinges intact, leather cracked and broken; corners bumped. All edges are sprinkled with red ink. Internal condition is very good. Wilson dedicates the book to Edmund Halley, noted British astronomer. This is a comprehensive work. It went through several editions. The section on solids by William Hume has a separate collation.
