A very clean copy with minor stains. This is an excessively rare edition, with only a single copy located in the US.William Whately was a Puritan preacher who lived in England during the 17th century. He was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire in 1583 and studied at Magdalen College, Oxford. He became a pastor in Banbury in 1605 and later served as a minister in Banbury and then Deddington. Whately was known for his passionate preaching style and his emphasis on the importance of living a virtuous life in accordance with biblical teachings.

London. Printed and sold by the Booksellers in Town and Country., 1738. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 6½"x4¼" (17cm x 12cm). Original full blind stamped leather board rebacked. Portrait plate faces title page + A-Qq4 pages; each sermon is separately paginated; the book is complete. Endpapers have some browning and ink inscriptions. The portrait and title page show evidence of a tape repair which has now been restored. The date has been shaved at the base of the title page leaving the top part of the Roman numerals visible. Some light foxing / light browning in the text which is otherwise clean and crisp. This is the first edition of this very early set of sermons and the only one published in 1738. It was then re-published 3 times in 1739 and only once more in 1745. A rare collection published just 3 years after Whitefield's conversion and held in a handful of Institutional Libraries.
