New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1944. viii, (2), 102 pages. First printing. Signed and inscribed: "To Mae Mayhew with sincere regards. Robert Penn Warren. January 1945." Ms Mayhew was a student in English 120 (Poetry), an extension course taught by Warren at the University of Minnesota. Her grade report (she got an A!) is taped to the front pastedown endpaper, adjacent to the inscription on the free endpaper. The book is in about very good condition: generally clean and tight; water stain limited to area at bottom of front cover; small ink stain near fore-edge of front free endpaper. The dust jacket has survived, but with extensive edgewear and relatively shallow chipping along the top edge; water staining at bottom of front panel; expected fading of green background. It looks much better now that it is in a Brodart polyester cover.. San Francisco: Carleton Watkins, 1875. Number 3553 in Watkins' "New Series" of stereoviews. The image shows a view of the interior of the Palace Hotel in San Francisco: a courtyard on the ground level and 7 stories of hallways with columns and handrails; some rocking chairs can be seen around the perimeter of the courtyard. The mount is orange, with a pink verso that includes the stamp for G. Beach, the San Francisco stationer who originally sold the stereoview. Provenance: from the collection of Robert N. Dennis, who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the U. S. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70,000 stereoviews from his collection, many of which can be viewed on the library's website. The Watlkins stereoview is in an envelope that Dennis used to circulate the view for critiques by fellow amateur stereo photographers, who like Dennis were members of The Stereoscopic Society.
