Book has yellowed edges, a bump to the base of the epine, and previous owner's notes at the end of the epilogue. During World War II, the Nazi SS looted a small Dutch museum of its collection of books belonging to the 17th-century jewish philosopher, Spinoza, ignoring far more valuable Old Masters in nearby buildings. The officer in charge was heard to say that the operation was of “great importance for the exploration of the Spinoza problem.” The books were recovered almost intact from a salt mine after the war.
