Description:
Chicago University Press, Dec 1990. New edition. Paperback. This is Yates's masterpiece, a brilliant and lucid survey of a wide range of magical traditions in the Renaissance. Yates argues that magic lay at the heart of the Scientific Revolution of the seventeenth century, and places the extraordinary misfit Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) at the center of that development. In later works, Yates often let her insight run wild, but this book rightly revolutionized thinking about magic and occultism in the Renaissance. It will be a difficult read for those not used to academic writing, but it is extremely clear, and well worth the effort.

Description:
Routledge, Oct 1993. New edition. Paperback. I bought this book after reading 'The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail' as I wanted to learn more about the subject of Rosicrucianism. I wasn't disappointed. Yates manages to successfully explore the Rosicrucian movement in a cultural/historical context, examining a large body of source material (including both pictures and text) in order to attempt to trace the evolution of this secret organisation. \nI would mention that this is not a book which focuses upon the supernatural mystique associated with the Knights Templar etc. so don't buy this if you're looking for myth and magic. It can be pretty hard-going at times, but if you want to understand and widen your interest in esoterica, then this is an essential title to have in your collection.

Description:
Dover Publications Inc., Mar 2003. Paperback. An interesting insight into some of Houdini's own ideas and methods - with plenty of photographs, illustrations etc. As ever, Walter Gibson's contributions add extra depth and clarity, with many insightful comments drawn from his own friendship with Houdini. My *only* complaint would be that some of the knots etc. described are poorly explained in the text - and not shown clearly enough in photographs or diagrams to make them workable!! So some of the 'secrets' are actually not shared with the reader at all - at least not without a great deal of research and experimentation on their part! Over all, however, this book is an essential title for any magical collection. Entertaining, full of effects (including ESCAPES) which the reader can perform themselves. Gibson's notes add extra depth and insight. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Description:
Prentice Hall, Feb 1998. Paperback. The Yourdons don't claim to know what will happen in late 1999 and early 2000, which affords them more credibility than anyone who does claims to 'know'. This book is an in depth look at many of the things which COULD happen, along with general advice on how to minimize the effects on your family.\nIt is quite long and somewhat dry. If you are seriously interested in Y2K, it is a great introduction to the problem. If you want to know more about Y2K, skimming parts of this would be of benefit. For details on preparation, this is not the book. It is a good first book on the subject, but should not be your last or only book on Y2K. If you know nothing about the problem, you may want to start with the appendices. \nThe list of suggested books is just that, a list. The web site list has a little description of each site and is thus more useful.
