Queensland-born, Sydney-based photographer William Yang’s significant contribution to Australian photography spans five decades. Known for his reflective and joyous depictions of Australia’s LGBTQI scene in the late 70s and 80s through to the present. Yang’s photography is informed by the cultural and political pressures of growing up as a gay man from a Chinese immigrant family in north Queensland. This exhibition is a major survey of Yang’s work, which will trace his career from documentary photography through to explorations of cultural and sexual identities and his depictions of landscape. He integrates a photographic practice with writing, video and performance.

Sydney : James Fraser, 1984. Folio, boards in dustjacket (spine sunned), 143 pp., previous owner's name neatly written on endpaper, small spot of foxing to title page, illustrated throughout. William Yang's honest and unabashed portraits of Sydney in the 1970s and 80s record a time of cultural renewal and new identity. Yang's photographs record the art and party scene, celebrities, marginalised urban characters, and the first years of the gay and lesbian mardi gras.

Gelatin silver print photograph, 89 x 140 mm, printed on postcard stock; captioned in the negative '374. Goodradigbee River, Burrinjuck, Aug. 1914. H & S'; verso imprinted 'Howard & Shearsby, Yass, N.S.W.'; a very sharp image with great depth of field; not postally used, in superb condition. We have not been able to locate any example of this image in Australian institutional collections.

Six albumen print photographs in carte de visite format, each approx. 101 x 63 mm (mounts); three with the back mark of Barcroft Capel Boake, 330 George Street, Sydney; two with the back mark mark of Mr & Mrs Oswald Allen, 360 George Street, Sydney; one with the back mark of J. Yes, 432 George Street, Sydney; and one without a studio imprint; all six have contemporary inscriptions in ink (five written in the same hand) on the verso identifying the sitters as follows: Lewis Y. Jones, Sub Lieut, Blanche; T. T. A. Smith, Lieut, Blanche; F. F. Henderson, Sub Lieut., Blanche; W. F. Sweetnam, MD, Assist. Surg. Blanche; F. W. B. Praed, Lieut., HMS Blanche; James Taffatt, nee Festing, Sub Lieut., Blanche; some light foxing to the Yates mount, otherwise the cartes are in very good condition. The Royal Navy sloop HMS Blanche arrived in Sydney in 1868, and was active on the Australian Station up until 1875. A profusely illustrated volume of essays. New York poet and critic John Yau's meditation on the art and vision of Jasper Johns.

Sydney : Joshua Yeldham, 2002. Quarto, illustrated wrappers, approx. 150 pages, small tear to half-title, illustrated. Limited to 1000 numbered copies. Bestowed with a writer's grant from the Queen's Trust, artist Joshua Yeldham packed his Combi Volkswagen to make his way along the Australian dingo fence. His car broke down 300 kilometres north of Broken Hill. He spent the next 6 years there, on the wilderness of Wild Dog Flat, using an abandoned bus as his studio. Not far from the camp-site he discovered a lonely gravestone.

Rusden', pp. 96, printed slip with remarks by Sir Frederick Barlee pasted on first page, tipped in errata slip; contents clean and sound. An account of two Aboriginal lovers who come to ruin because they transgress tribal law, by Melbourne historian, educationist and civil servant G.W. Rusden.

Duodecimo (155 x 118 mm), original limp pigskin (moderate wear to edges, corners and spine), front lettered in blind 'Circumnavigators' Club'; marbled pastedowns and endpapers; pp. xxi, [2 blank], [1 List of officers], printed on parchment, text in black with vignette decorations and initials in black and green; the list of officers on the last page includes Wm. H. Taft (Honorary President), Robert Frothingham (President), George F. Trowbridge (Vice-President), William E. Peck (Treasurer), and V. Atherton Dodge (Secretary); very good throughout; loosely enclosed is the portable certificate (117 x 150 mm) that would have been issued with the book, belonging to member no. 291 (whose ""sober signature"" is difficult to decipher), which is printed on the same parchment stock and signed by Frothingham, Dodge and Peck. Stereoscopic albumen print photograph (78 x 77 mm each image) on original yellow card mount, c 1875, imprint recto: ""Animals in the Gardens of the Zoological Society of London, Photographed from life by F. York. 34. Emeu, Dromeus Novae Hollandiae (sic)"". Superb condition. York published his series of photographs of animals in the London Zoo in the 1870s. This image of an emu (Dromaius Novaehollandiae) in captivity appears to be the earliest recorded photograph of this Australian native bird. (NLA holds a Charles Kerry photograph of a taxidermy specimen dated 1894-95).

Stereoscopic albumen print photograph, 78 x 77 mm each individual image (irregular), on original green card mount, imprinted recto: 'Animals in Zoological Gardens / Photographed from Life. London'; verso with original printed paper label: 'Australian Pelican'; a tiny surface scratch below the eye of the pelican in the right-hand print, otherwise in fine condition. During the 1870s Frederick York published his series of stereoscopic photographs of animals in the London Zoo in several iterations, the earliest set appearing in 1872. This portrait of the Australian Pelican seems to be unrecorded in Australian collections.
