First and last leaves a little foxed, some occasional browning in text. Limp cloth covered boards considerably browned on spine and upper cover. The author, Yagi Hisaharu, was the school principal of a Japanese girls' high school in Fushun, Manchuria. This book is a collection of letters he wrote to his students during a study tour he undertook to look at girls' education in the United States, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Scandinavia and Britain over an eight month period between October 1926 and June 1927. He writes in detail about girls' education in New York, Paris, Berlin and London. He also conveys more general impressions and stories of his experiences in the other places in visited. .

Still a large and attractive image. This rare sugoroku game sheet was published in December 1894, just in time for the New Year celebrations of 1895. At that time, Japan was exerting strong pressure on China in Korea and the Liaodong Peninsula, which included Port Arthur and Mukden. The game commences at the Headquarters in Tokyo and progresses through Korea and China. The main theme revolves around Japan's role in protecting Korea and its people from China, while showcasing Japan's military prowess on land and at sea. Based on the 1968 exhibition Mutual Influences Between Japanese and Western Arts, held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, this work initially emphasises the historical aspects of relationships between Japan and the West through articles by such well known experts as Bernard Dorival, Michiaki Kawakita, Clay Lancaster, Teijiro Muramatsu, Jo Okada, Giulio C. Showa 17 [1942].. 25 tipped in colour plates, 5 tipped in black and photographic plates (1 in duplication), 22 x 30cm, over 75 pages of text on folded leaves, attractive decorative colour endpapers. Printed on war-time paper with the typical even browning of leaves but the plates, printed on a better quality paper, are in good bright condition with a few occasional creased corners only. Cloth covered boards with tassle ties. Cloth trifle faded lower section and a little worn at corners and edges. Good copy. This beautifully presented book shows art works which adorned the walls of Kaigunkan (海軍館), which was built in 1937 in Harajuku in Tokyo as the Naval Officers' Hall. Cabinet card, silver albumen photograph, 14 x 9.5 cm backed onto card and an elaborate olive toned pebbled thick card mount 18.1 x 11.5 cm, blind stamped, the signature of the studio in gilt, upper and lower edge with scalloped edges, pencilled note in rather amateur characters on reverse, some silver mirroring, but in very good condition. Fine portrait of an unknown officer, from a famed studio but, remarkably, about whom little is known (see: Terry Bennet, "Japanese Photography in Japan 1850 - 1912").
