Duckworth, 1973 160 printed pages. 8 duotone pages of family photographic illustrations & 8 pages of illustrations of paintings. Woodblock illustrated chapter headings throughout. Signed in ink by Kyffin Williams in flourishing hand on half-title page. Printed map endpapers. 16.5 x 25.5 cm. Original red cloth. Gilt lettering along spine. Dustwrapper very slightly shelf worn. Price excised from lower corner of inner dustwrapper. Sir Kyffin Williams (1918-2006) was a Welsh painter best known for his depictions of the Welsh countryside, shepherds and their sheepdogs, livestock, and small villages. Williams paintings were primarily made with impasto palette knife marks and few brushstrokes, employing a limited palette consisting of gray and subtle greens that emanate the color found in the rocks and foliage of Wales. He went to the Slade School of Fine Art in London, also spending time painting in the Welsh settlement of Y Wladfa in Patagonia, Argentina in 1968, thanks to the Winston Churchill… Read More

Description:
East African Standard Limited, 1918 Broadsheet on thin paper (folded creases and patches of foxing; some edges slightly worn). 21 x 34 cm. The African Standard, the oldest newspaper in British East Africa or Uganda, was established as a weekly by Alibhai Mulla Jeevanjee, a very rich Parsee contractor, general merchant, & immigrant businessman in 1902. In 1905 Jevanjee, sold the paper for £50 to Maia Anderson (1874-1936) & Rudolf Franz Mayer (1874-1934), who changed the paper's name to the East African Standard. On Aug. 19, 1905 it became a daily paper and in 1910 moved its headquarters from Mombasa to Nairobi. The East African Standard declared strongly colonialist viewpoints & spent the first few months of the First World War proclaiming the need to keep peace in the colonies & not encourage Africans to seize the opportunity to revolt. Mayer, arriving in East Africa in 1900 from Germany with nothing but an old hand printing press and five pounds, had become by 1914… Read More

MHF Memorial Foundation Foligno, 2009 184 printed pages, many illustrations mostin colour some in b/w. Italian and English language. 24.5 x 29.5 cm, Artificial silk pictorial upper cover with white lettering on brown cloth. This bilingual book is an investigation into a unique and original iconographic invention by Andrea Mantegna: "Our Lady of Tenderness with the dreamy Child" who, as a devotional image, had inexplicably not yet found widespread recognition. This particular iconography of the "sleeping baby", in the nativity on the lap of the Madonna, now represented in the style of the "Glycophilousa"(Tenderness, which normally underlines the mutual, intimate relationship between mother and child), becomes here instead one-sided - Jesus sleeping: there is no precedent to Mantegna's unique and lasting iconographic creation. The research starts from the direct study of a well-known but unpublished painting with its original "Mantegnesca" in comparison with… Read More

Description:
Methuen, London., 1962 FIRST UK EDITION. 62 printed pages of colour printed cartoons (evenly toned in margins). Pictorial blue printed endpapers. 23 x 30.5 cm. Original printed colour paper-covered boards (some marks, and wear, corners rubbed), with original red paper spine (slightly faded, two closed tears mid-way down, very slightly worn at hinges, head and tail). Following The Red Sea Sharks (1958) and its large number of characters, Tintin in Tibet differs from other stories in the series in that it features only a few familiar characters and is also Hergé's only adventure not to pit Tintin against an antagonist. Themes in Hergé's story include extrasensory perception, the mysticism of Tibetan Buddhism, and friendship. Translated into 32 languages, Tintin in Tibet was widely acclaimed by critics and is generally considered to be Hergé's finest work and the author's personal favourite; it has also been praised by the Dalai Lama, who awarded it the Light of Truth… Read More

Description:
1738 Excellent condition. Copper-plate engraving. Extremely light age toning. Hoizontal fold. Small marginal tear not affecting image. 315mm x 207mm. Other spellings of Philipp Cluver include Cluverio and Cluverius. Many of his maps were engraved by Peter Bertius-this is unsigned. 1738 is an estimated date but this map appears to have been published pre-1750. An interesting map of Malta, Southern Sicily & part of the Mediterranean coast of Northern Africa showing Carthage and ancient Roman African provinces. It includes a very decorative title cartouche depicting a Roman solider, Roman palace, its inhabitants &, in the background, an attacking army watching a city burn. Clüver was a German geographer, who was given a special appointment at Leiden as geographer and in charge of the university's library, but his life's project was a general study of the geography, based not only on history & classical literary sources, but, and this was his ground-breaking contribution,… Read More
