Folio. vi,(3),vi-xx,38pp. Eleven pates plus frontispiece: full page copper engravings by Bunbury. Wanting B1 of the prelims, and apparently issued that way, As the ESTC notes, "Possibly deliberately mis-signed in order to support the 'missing' portion of the author's preface - see editor's note." Bound to style in half calf, red leather lettering label, gilt; marbled paper boards. Two signatures have been remargined for strength and without loss; the title page has been mounted and lacks upper and inner margins but also without loss, plates and text occasionally foxed but a very good copy, completely uncut and with wide margins, in a fine binding. Reprinted in 1788, 1791, 1792 and 1796. A sequel, "Annals of Horsemanship", was issued in 1791. "A lively and entertaining jeu d'esprit of the pencil and the pen...." Lowndes, p. 860.

Backhoff traveled from Moscow to China via Siberia in 1654. Wagener traveled throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and America. This account is taken from his diary. He was in China in 1653. Translated from the French from a Dutch original. Bound to style with leather spine, marbled paper boards, leather lettering label, gilt. Light foxing, else a very good copy. The author was the ship's secretary and one of the survivors of the shipwreck. He spent thirteen years in captivity in Korea before managing to return to Holland in 1668. Cox 1, p. 334.

Boston: Crosby, Nichols, and Company, 1859. First edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo. State A, but bound in blue cloth instead of black. The boards blind-stamped with a floral border enclosing an arabesque floral design. The spine is stamped in gilt and blind. At the top is an angel holding the Grail, followed by the title. At the bottom an vignette of Sir Owain, the lion and the serpent. Yellow coated endpapers. With the break in pagination at x: x, 13-414pp followed by 2pp publisher's catalogue. Illustrated in black and white. (Later states have colored illustrations.) Cloth rubbed and the corners and worn, as are the spine tips. Inner hinges cracked but firm. Text block is in very good condition. All six illustrations called for are present. Four of the illustrations belong to Part I, the other two belong to Part II. We are grading this a good copy only because of the wear and rubbing to the binding, but the text block is in very good condition. Peter Parley to Penrod, pp. 14ff.

Ten illustrations housed in a portfolio of cloth spine, decorative paper boards, facsimile of Houser's signature inset on the upper board, tape ties. The colophon is likewise on a folio-sized sheet. The illustrations are selected from four books: "Cochise" (1953), "Blue Canyon Horse", (1954), "The Cave" (1958) and "Desert People" (1962). The illustrations are printed letterpress by the Palace Press on paper handmade by Mark Fredrickson at his Singing River Studio in Santa Fé. One of 50 numbered copies of which this is No. 30.

The plate, when extended measures 5-1/2 by 63 inches. Original red cloth, intricately embossed on the upper board. Binding has wear at edges and a stain on the lower corner; the spine has been neatly mended from within. The text and plate are in near fine condition. The plate depicts a birds-eye view of San Diego and Coronado, with the image folding out to 18 inches; thereafter are scenes of the area. Rare. Rocq 7944. The first edition, but with no mention of the plate, is listed as Rocq 7943, 1883.

Small bumps on the upper right corner of the upper board and on the spine tip, else a fine copy. The duswrapper is not clipped. There is offset on the rear panel from an early protective covering, and some light soil, else the dustwrapper is near fine. The first title in Alexander's acclaimed Prydain Cycle. The American edition of this title was printed in 1964. This first in the series introduces Taran and the oracular pig, Hen Wen, and sets the stage for the Black Cauldron.
