This is one of fifty copies in full golden brown oasis morocco, gilt press mark on the upper cover, top edge gilt. Mardersteig's lengthy (60-page) introduction is followed by Feliciano's treatise on the construction of Roman letters (ca. 1460). The 25 letters are hand-colored in two colors (after the original manuscript) with the corresponding construction grid on facing verso. Mardersteig was fascinated by the career of Feliciano (1433-1479), who started off as a professional caligrapher and lived into the print era, even publishing a volume of Petrarch in Poiano in 1476. Book is fine, free of all markings, binding fresh and flexible. Prospectus laid in, VG+. Slipcase is tight and free of splits, clean except for what looks like a small streak of a coffee drip on the back edge (the part that does not face the shelf). Lovely book. Mardersteig 121. This is one of the more interesting leaf books, presenting in one place specimens of all four Aldine Greeks fonts. One of the four leaves is from the great Aristotle of 1497. Lovely production.

Beinwil am See Dr W Eichenberger, 1990. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. This is a massive set of early leaves. I have only seen one other of these sets in trade in the last twenty years. The set is meant to accompany the 1990 issue of Konrad Haebler's Alte Typographie und Buchkunst. That book about early printing, not present here, is common -- but only 50 of these sets of the original leaves was issued. It's a marvelous tour of early printing. 37 of 51 are cradle printing, none later than 1550. All are exemplary of developments in early typography in Germany, Italy and France. The emphasis is on Germany, though, which shows great variety. Size of the leaves varies, but all are presented in window mounts measuring 480 x 350 mm. (19 x 13 3/4"), and the whole is contained in a box measuring 19 3/4 x 14 1/4"; Text volume: 344 x 244 mm. (13 1/2 × 9 1/2").
