Planck was a German physicist who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 for his work on quantum theory of which he was the founder and developer. This theory evolved from his research on black-body radiation problems. Planck's constant, h, the quantum of action, was named for him. Collation: [4], 132; [4], 122, [2 (errata)]; [4], 128 p. There are 10 copper engravings (5, 2, 3) with four folding. One of the engravings is by Ehret. There are woodcut initials and diagrams in the text. Loss to lower half of spine. Covers are in good condition with only minor bumping on corners. This volume contains 3 separate issues of the journal bound together. There is also a small rust hole in I3 of the 3rd section with loss to two letters. Internal condition is generally good with only occasional spotting. Bookplate (front paste down) and embossed amoral coat of arms (on first title page) for Earls of Macclesfield are present. "Christopher Clavius published the first edition of his algebra textbook in 1608, in Rome, by Zannetti. Small 4to(24.5 x 17.2 cm). Contemporayry green morocco binding. Collation: 119 lv, each leaf mounted on stub with single labeled specimen. Each specimen is identified with earlier Latin name in black ink and later additions in red ink. All specimens are well preserved and beautifully displayed on the page. Binding has raised bands; title in gilt in upper panel. There is sunning on the spine and along the hinges and edges of boards, less so for the later. Minor wear to ends of spine. Monogram "SB" in calligraphic style in gilt in each corner of boards. The inner covers are elaborately detailed in gilt dentils and additional inner borders. Collation: x, [11]-171, 12 [catalog] pp. This work is illustrated with a frontispiece and 30 in text figures. The binding is sound with sunning on the spine and hinges. The text has some minor foxing being greater for the preliminaries and the catalog in the rear. This work was of major influence for American grape growing, particularly under glass. Chorlton provides tabular data for comparing growth, flowering and fruit development for vines in the hot house versus those grown outdoors. He also discusses all aspects of hot-house management, propagation, pruning, and disease. This was a popular work that went through a number of editions. (Gabler, G16)

Leiden: C. Boutesteyn, 1687, 1689. Vellum. Very good. 4to (19.5 x 15.5 cm) Contemporary vellum. Some repairs to tears in a few folding plates. Collation: Anatomia- [vi], 3- 78, 258pp. + 5 engraved plates; Continuatio- [pp. viii (title & indices)] 124 pp. + 11 engraved plates. In both sections there are a number of in text engravings and several of the plates are folded. This is an exceptional copy as it contains the full Latin text for Letters 43,42, 38, 28, 29, 30, 31, 35, 46, 47, 45, 48, 50, 51, 52 and 53-60 (last section). The date for the last section is 1689, first edition of these collected letters. The engraved plate at front is dated 1685. A number of letters were submitted to Robert Hooke for presentation to the Royal Society of London. The letters cover a range of investigations for animals, plants and minerals that are complemented with numerous illustrations in text and tipped in. (Dobell 23A and 24)
