Description:
New Orleans: Hood Orphan Memorial Fund, G.T. Beauregard, 1880. First. Hardcover. Overall VG for a book that most oftensuffers from weak spine cloth (most copies have a replaced spine) and its gray/brown cloth is easily soiled. Chip out of upper spine. See pictures./None.. Hood died before his manuscript was published. Hood and his wife left many orphaned children so General Beauregard oversaw the publication of this book so that money would be available to care for the children. The narrative is largely a rebuttal to General Joe Johnston's scathing comments about Hood in Johnston's autobiography. There are many unanswered questions about Hood's generalship left unanswered. But this book is a "must have" for any credible collection. TCS 238; SP. ITC 93. Nevins II-65. Howes H-622.

Description:
Washington City: G.M. Van Buren, 1883. Probable Second. Wraps. G+. Book was used but still together nicely. Wrap covers neatly relaid./None.. The author wrote several books, in fact, he may have extracted portions of this book for publication under separate cover; i.e., The List of Battles. An unusual book that is a consolidation of several subjects. Of major importance is the list of surgeons (Union) as a search for their information is a very time consuming and frustrating task. The surgeons are listed by state and numerically by unit. There are several pages on USCT surgeons also. This is a Union book and contains no Confederate information.

n.p.: American Tract Society, {ca. 1863}. Likely a First. HB. Very small book meant for children or a shirt pocket. Book is worn as it has been used, but not abused. Pencil figures on ffep. Overall just G./No Jacket. Inscribed on ffep with, "To Wanda, From Father, 1863." " Help ? you while I am away with the army." Odd, but it contains two title pages. The second title is a varient of the first one. Contains eight separate stories with heavy dose of illustrations in each. Certainly has seen some use, but holding together nicely in its original binding. A special keepsake. Unfortunately we don't know who the soldier was or his fate.

Description:
Joliet, IL: For the Author, 1884. Second edition of 1884. Hard Cover. Hinges repaired. Front board spotted (see photos) But tight and square./None. Marshall, a Will County farmer in civilian life, served in the 33rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry from 1861 to 1864. The unit's service was primarily in Missouri so scarce stuff there. They also went down the Mississippi River, spent some time with Army of the TN and completed their service on the Alabama Gulf Coast. A good Midwestern unit history which are not all that common. There is a faint pencil signature of Noah Preston. The only one by that name to survive the War was a member of the 96th USCT according to my database. He was born in Louisiana. Nevins I-128. Dornbusch I-IL-164.

Portraits are in outstanding condition./None.. The young Morton was a member of a Nashville militia unit that, when the War began, became part of the famed First Tennessee Infantry. Morton gained a captaincy (supposedly the youngest captain in Confederate service) and served under Nathan Bedford Forrest as his chief of artillery. The book contains a discussion of nearly all the battles Forrest fought. Description:
NY: Neale Publishing, 1900. Second. Hard Cover. VG/None. Strictly an autobiography. Johnston was a Georgian, educated at Mercer, and an anti-secessionist which cost him his position at the University of Georgia. He did not serve in the Confederate Army, but ran boy's schools during the War and long after. Of interest are his recollections of growing up on a plantation. (Interesting anecdote: he was puny so his father sent him to the field to work with his slaves four days a week. It worked. He knew fellow Georgian Alexander Stephens. They had many conversations about the War which are interesting reading. I could not find information of why he was titled"colonel." Probably self anointed.
