These twenty-six scenes, paired with an indelicate word or phrase for each letter of the alphabet, feature real postage-stamp reproductions of famous figures by Matisse, Boucher, and others, with Jacobi's own illustrations reaching in to interact with the art in ways not usually permitted at the Louvre. 3.25'' x 2.75'', in 5.5'' x 6'' box. Original side-stapled and perforated postal booklet, illustrated throughout with pictorial postage stamps and hand-painted and -lettered additions. Large original painted canvas banner likely utilized in one of Ken Kesey's final Acid Test events and based on Kesey's infamous limited edition ACID TEST album. While Timothy Leary's advocacy for LSD focused on science and scholarship (or attempted to seem so) and in doing so tried to introduce the drug to suburban homes under a thin veil of legitimacy, it was Ken Kesey's Acid Tests that made it dangerous again and perhaps more than any other effort helped popularize LSD in the counterculture. Kesey, fresh off his CUCKOO'S NEST success, staged these events primarily in and around the San Francisco Bay Area from 1965-66, beginning in people's homes, but slowly growing both in popularity and venue. This banner is clearly based on the album art for Kesey's infamous cult LP, THE ACID TEST, released in March 1966 in a limited edition of 500 and sold primarily in the Bay Area. First edition, review copy, of this New Directions novel famous for its jacket design by Andy Warhol, who modeled the lettering of the title after his mother's. This was the first novel by Neame, purportedly "edited by" him and written by the eponymous main character. Warhol's design features a head stylized to resemble an African mask, stamped in repeating rows across the front and back cover, with a red-haired female figure in the center. Of his cover design, Warhol wrote in his diary: "And one guy said he had a book jacket that I'd done or a book called the Adventures of...somebody, I forget.
