Near fine/ near fine. Roger Bootle is a British economist, columnist for The Telegraph and Chairman of Capital Economics, a macro-economic research company. In 2012 a team from Capital Economics, led by Bootle, won the Wolfson Economics Prize for finding a practical way to break up the eurozone. The dedicatee is Doreen Newlyn, who was Social Studies Lecturer at the University of Leeds (1948 -52) and a member of its Staff Dramatic Society. With her husband, the economist and Africanist Walter Newlyn, she set up the Uganda Pilgrim Players in the late 1950s, the country's first multi-racial theatre group. Description:
London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd, 1945. Hardback. Very Good. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. viii, 334. Maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Lean to spine, pushing to heel of spine. Else, clean and tidy, especially given the poor post-war paper stock. In the original dust jacket with its apt melodramatic cover vignette (and double cleff-cum-noose spine design): ragged, losses to spines end, corners and bottom of front panel, numerous closed tears with amateur tape-repairs to reverse. Very good/ good-only. A robust copy of Brittain's penultimate novel. A pacifist novel with a biographical (rather than autobiographical) foundation, in Testament of Experience, Brittain recalled its genesis: "In the autumn of 1939, I was summoned to a murder trial as a potential witness for the defense. The prisoner, a sensitive and intelligent professional man, had caused his wife's death and then attempted suicide, but afterwards claimed that he could remember nothing of the tragedy. A team of psychological specialists traced…

[Glasgow]: William MacLellan/ Poetry Scotland Series, 1944. Quarter cloth, paper boards. Good+. FIRST EDITION. Slim 8vo, pp. 32 + colour frontis by Maxwell. Quarter red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, white paper boards. Gently soiled, darkened in patches (from losses to DJ), creased, bottom corners bumped and chipped, nick to top edge of rear board. Toned, POI in blue pen to ffep: "Anne Grant/ May 28 1945/ Edinburgh." Else, clean and tight. In John Maxwell's wonderful original dust jacket: soiled, a number of closed tears and losses. Good+/ good+ Ruthven Todd (1914-1978), was a Scottish poet, artist, novelist, and William Blake expert. The year of publication was otherwise an annus horribilis for Todd, who had recently separated from his wife, Cicely (née Crew) and whose Bloomsbury flat was hit by a flying bomb, necessitating a move to Essex. The collection closes with poems on artists and writers, including Blake, Paul Klee, Picasso, Arthur Rimbaud and H. G. Wells.

Original green cloth, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, upper board decorated and lettered in black. Bottom edge untrimmed. Slight lean to spine, gentle pushing to spine ends, bottom corners bruised, rubbed. Signed and dated by Grand in faded sepia ink to front pastedown in the year of publication: "Sarah Grand/ 1912.", below 'Dunecht' book-label. Offsetting and foxing to feps, else, clean and tight. Very good. A pleasing copy of Grand's penultimate novel, unusual signed and tantalising in its connection with the Pearsons of Dunecht. Sarah Grand, the pen name of Frances Elizabeth Bellenden McFall (nĂ©e Clarke, 1854-1943), was an Irish author and suffragist, who laid claim to coining the term 'the new woman'. Alongside her weighty 'problem' novels, in the early decades of the twentieth century, Grand lectured throughout England and the United States, promoting women's suffrage, rational dress,…

Morrison was a creative shape-shifter: having originally studied at the Glasgow School of Art, she subsequently trained in the theatre and joined Frank Benson's company, with which she performed across the English provinces and at the Royal Court. She retired from the stage to pursue a career as a novelist, initially publishing short stories under Peggy Morrison, before finding international success with her first novel as March Cost, A Man Named Luke (1932). Spine cocked, lightly soiled, bruising to extremities, faint spotting to edges, offsetting to feps, occasional marks, else, clean. Jisc LHD lists 4 holdings in the UK (BL, Bodleian, Cambridge and NLS). A good+ copy of an unusual Victorian children's novel. Good+ One of the Shilling Books from Uncle Dick's Library; fellow titles included Beatrice and Brian by Helen Briston: "A very prettily told story about a wayward little lady and a large mastiff dog, specially adapted for girls" (Derbyshire Advertiser). The brief publisher's catalogue bound in at the rear advertises "Foolscap 8vo, 128 pp. Cloth, gilt lettered"; a description that doesn't fit this book: perhaps, a later, cheaper binding?
