Anders Sparrman joined Cook's second voyage at the Cape of Good Hope, and served as assistant naturalist to Johann Reinhold and Georg Forster. This well illustrated monograph presents the collection of artefacts collected by Sparrman in the Pacific - one of the earliest such collections assembled by a European, and therefore of prime importance to our understanding of the development of Polynesian material cultures. The collection, now housed in the Ethnographical Museum of Sweden, includes objects from New Zealand, the Friendly Isles (Tonga),Tahiti, New Hebrides, New Caledonia and the Marquesas

Postal envelope, 76 x 125 mm, the verso engraved with six vignette illustrations depicting scenes from Uncle Tom's Cabin, and two main legends in capitals, the first around the upper flap: ALL THINGS WHATSOEVER YE WOULD THAT MEN SHOULD DO UNTO YOU DO YOU SO UNTO THEM  (Matthew 7:12), and the second below it: YE WHO TAKE FREEDOM FROM MEN HOW WILL YOU ANSWER IT TO GOD (a paraphrase of a line in Uncle Tom's Cabin, Chapter 37); with two legends in smaller lettering, one at the top of the flap: THE EYE OF THE LORD GOD IS UPON YOU, and one at the bottom edge: FEAR NOT! Albumen print photograph, 210 x 285 mm, laid down on its original album leaf of thin card, no photographer's imprint; the albumen print is in good condition with excellent tonal range, a small surface blemish to the right of the Aboriginal figures in lower left corner, and some fading towards the upper and right margins; the mount with a few light marks; verso with a smaller format albumen print (probably also of the interior of the Exhibition Building), showing a display of jewellery in cabinets, including one case with printed sign reading '... of the Hanau jewellers'. Another view of the same scene, taken from a slightly different angle, is held in the collection of Museum Victoria, as part of an album of 61 photographs of the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880 presented by the Trustees of the Exhibition to its Assistant Secretary, Thomas B. Small octavo (150 x 105 mm), maroon faux crocodile-skin textured stiff card wrappers, gilt lettering to the front; 20 pp, chromolithographic pastedowns with Art Nouveau designs by the celebrated lithographers A. Waton of St. Etienne, title page and text in red and black, double-page halftone plate at centre; a superb example of a very attractive fin de siècle trade catalogue for absinthe and other exotic spirits and liqueurs, including Curaçao, Kirsch, Cognac and rum. Large format albumen print photograph, 360 x 260 mm, laid down on its original board mount with gilt embossed imprint of 'Hammer & Co. 6 Rundle St, Adelaide' to recto (mount trimmed slightly along the lower edge), the albumen print signed in ink 'Ever yours sincerely, A. Wyatt Mortimer', verso of mount with contemporary manuscript label 'Mr & Mrs Gould, with affectionate greetings from their old friend A. Wyatt Mortimer', the albumen print slightly pale and with a few small marks, but essentially in good condition. A. Wyatt-Mortimer's obituary appeared in the Adelaide Advertiser on 6 October, 1896. The obituary explains that the London-born musician and composer, who died prematurely from consumption, had emigrated to Adelaide in 1880, at the encouragement of his brother-in-law, Mr. C.J. Stevens.
