Description:
Hannover: Totalkunstbetrieb Timm Ulrichs, 3 Hannover 1, Postfach 6043, 1971. Very good. 1 mimeograph sheet (295 x 210) printed in blue on rose paper. Rare: not in KVK or OCLC. This mimeographed "Liste 2" is certainly one of the EARLIEST bibliographies of Ulrichs' graphic work, compiled (and originally typed?) by the artist himself as a vehicle of sale, and remains of the greatest interest to Ulrichs scholars and students of Concrete Art. We have not been able to determine if this "Liste" has been reprinted or reproduced in any form. In a conscious (and characteristic) gesture of rejection, Urichs completely withdrew from the art market in the 1970s, and thus the present leaflet would have been rendered obsolete within only a few years. Why was it saved? If Ulrichs compiled a "Liste" that preceded this one, we have been unable to locate a copy of it. Ulrichs' concrete art and early performances are of real significance in avant-garde art in the 60s and 70s, and yet his entire oeuvre is not completely… Read more

Description:
Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, Luton, etc.: s.n. [but from the Hemel Press Archive], 1970. Unbound. Very good. Dates: 1970s (various dates, but 1970-1975). Each photograph preserved in a Mylar L-sleeve; in a fine protective case. Sizes vary (generally: 12" x 9"). Extraordinary Archive of English protest photos from the angry first half decade of the 1970s, providing high quality images of demonstrations, marches and protests on subjects local to Hertfordshire, north of London, and beyond. The photographs are large format black and white -- about 27 x 21 cm -- silver gelatin prints with details relating the location, participation and sometimes photographer to the verso. Dating from 1970-1975, the demonstrators are seen protesting against everything from the Vietnam War and Apartheid in South Africa, to road crossings and factory closures in Hertfordshire. Mostly landscape in format, the images are redolent of their era with evocative details of clothing and fashion with many images of home-made signs… Read more

Description:
n.d. (19th or 20th century). Two illuminations on thin India paper some vertical creasing, professionally matted and framed. Ad 1 (priapus): 300 x 250 mm (frame size), 198 x 140 mm (visible), 147 x 93 mm (size of illumination). Ad 2 (she-devil): 306 x 231 mm (frame size), 205 x 140 mm (visible), 150 x 83 mm (size of illumination). Sold as a pair. Two weird erotic Indian illuminations, the likes of which we have never before encountered, and are unlikely to encounter again. Popular in Roman decorative art, the winged priapus is uncommon in Indian iconography. Our illumination is of particularly high quality, and depicts a beautiful Indian woman riding a reined priapus perhas twice her size. The priapus is depicted with avain feet and giant wings. The environment is like a strange dream: in the foreground a grey pool with pink flowers; behind are dark green hills with eerie trees and vegetation. In the sky at sunset are what appear to be rain clouds, touched in white. We have been unable to transcribe… Read more

Venice: Domenico Giglio; Paolo and Aldo Manutius, 1564. Good. Ad 1: 8vo. Part 1: [1], 2-138, [4] = 142 ff. Part 2: [1], 2-122, [2] = 124 ff. Contemporary limp vellum with "yapp" edges, title in MS on spine, singular "1" at bottom of spine indicating the first of two volumes, small abraisons on free endleaves from leather ties (no longer present). Date of 1742 written next to printer's device on Part 1 title. 2nd occurrence of f. 89 has creased corner, small tear on 2nd occurrence of f. 23. Ad 2: 8vo. [4], 9-214, [6] = 216 ff. Contemporary paper boards, MS number "4247" on spine, singular "2" at bottom of spine indicating the 2nd of two volumes, pasted title in red MS with blue paper border on spine. Title with fore-edge margin extended, final leaf (Register / Aldine anchor on verso) repaired and with margins partially extended. An excellent example of a 16th-century Italian "temporary" binding (no doubt original) which perfectly reveals its construction. The textblock (Lib. 1-2) is sewn onto 4… Read more

Description:
Pontresina, Switzerland: M. Caviezel, 1880. Very good. Large oblong 8vo. (230 x 190 mm). Altogether 12 leaves: 6 leaves with flower and plant identifications in manuscript, and 6 leaves with altogether 41 pasted-on pressed flowers (see below), each protected by original tissue guards. Original red cloth (a trifle worn), both covers embossed in blind, upper cover gilt with the title "Flora de la Suisse," cream-colored moire pastedowns and endpapers, inner hinges of red cloth (stained along lower hinge, affecting rear pastedown and endpaper in gutter, not affecting plates, text, or tissue guards. Preserved in a red cloth protective case. THE DIMENSIONALITY AND NATURALISM OF THE PRESSED FLOWERS AND PLANTS IN THIS ALBUM IS REMARKABLE, and stretches our conception of the 19th-century book as a physical object. Here the 41 specimens are arranged as BOUQUETS that emanate from actual MOSSY TURF. Thus, the present "book" is not only a vehicle for transmitting information in manuscript (scientific names of… Read more

Description:
Harrisburg, PA: s.n., 1840. Stated Third Edition (but see below). Very good. 12mo, 84 pp. Contemporary patterned paper over boards, contemporary sheep spine (binding worn but perfectly sound; damp-staining at the foot of the gutter for the first several gatherings; textblock a bit foxed as is true in all copies). Completely unsophisticated. The most famous folk magic and remedy book written in America, often referred to as the "Pow-Wow" book, first published in Reading in 1820, and with scattered Pennsylvania editions following throughout the 1820s and 1830s; it is still in print after 200 years. Regarding the present copy we are naturally drawn to the unsophisticated contemporary "Pennsylvania Dutch" binding: the pattered decorative paper which covers the pastepaper boards strongly resembles linen fabric; was it employed by the binder as a cheap alternative? Hohman's book, with its charms, recipes, terminology of illnesses, remedies for human and animal ailments, and magic formulae, continues to… Read more

Description:
New York: S. Hand and H. Garson, 1796. Softcover. Very good. 12mo. 23, [1] pp. Crude title-page woodcut vignette, with caption: "I'll shave 'em like a punish'd soldier, DRY. No killing Swine shall make a sweeter cry." Collation: [A]6 B6. Complete. Modern sympathetic wrappers. Lightly toned, but the paper stock strong. Evidence of tape stain in two gutter margins. Early American imprint of a fake "Sermon for the Fast" which ridicules clerical, legal, political, and military "shavers." The text was attributed by Evans to John Macgowan, author of several works issued under the pseudonyms of "The Shaver" and "Pasquin Shaveblock." But Macgowan could not have written the present work as he had died in 1780, and the pamphlet first appeared in London in 1795. Furthermore, on the verso of the title-page are two "Testimonies in Favor of this Sermon," both of which were published fifteen years after Magowan's death. The one from the "Monthly Review" (1795, vol. XVI, no. 7, p. 357) reads in part: "This… Read more

Description:
Paris: E. Plon, 1881. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Very good. Two vols. in one. Large thick quarto: xvi, 560 pp.; [vi],180 plates. Bound in very sturdy and handsome contemporary red half morocco over red cloth boards, rebacked with original spine laid down, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. First edition of the indispensable bibliography of ornament from the 16th to the 18th century, featuring artists from France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. There are two volumes in one; in our copy the plates are apparent printed on CHINE paper. The text is arranged according to artist / century / school. The second volume is composed entirely of full-page plates (180 of them!) of ornaments for vases, book illustrations, jewelry, and furniture designs. With an alphabetical index of known artists. An excellent copy, notoriously difficult to obtain in collectible condition, as here. Ours has a notable provenance, as it is the B.H. Breslauer copy, with his penciled accession number circled, and… Read more

Paris: (Jean-Baptiste) Gogue & (Jean-François) Nee de La Rochelle, 1776. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Dates: 22 January and following. 8vo. iv, 8 [Ordre des livres], xxxii [Avertissement + Table systematique], 382 pp., 4542 lots [livres] + 51 lots [estampes], of which 3059 lots are PRICED in a contemporary hand. French calf (ca. 1830), worn, triple gilt fillet around sides, rebacked with original smooth spine laid down, two red leather labels ("Catalogue Perrot" and "1776"), blue sprinkled edges, blue marbled pastedowns and endleaves. Old stamp of the Archief der Provincie Antwerpen on title-page and final page ("Afgevoerd" i.e. withdrawn). The Perrot sale catalogue was a milestone in the classification of knowledge, "remarkable because it adopted a new system of bibliography which, with good reason, had no imitators" (G. Brunet, who wrongly attributed the catalogue to Gogue). R. Blum, "Bibliographia," 1980, correctly attributes the cataloguing and classification to Nee. "His catalogue of… Read more

Description:
Paris: Alphonse Picard, 1886. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. viii, 243 pp., INTERLEAVED and ANNOTATED throughout. 2,776 lots. Contemporary French black and brown mottled boards, black roan spine with four raised bands, lettered direct in the second compartment. Lower hinge and recto of final endpaper repaired, evidence of waterstaining and old mold (now inactive) on final five leaves and endpaper. Not a good copy, but priced accordingly. Priced, interleaved, and profusely annotated copy that almost certainly belonged to the auctioneer or expert, in which are listed on the interleaved sheets the bids (in code) that were received. Emile Egger (1813-1885), eminent French philologist and Hellenist, was the author of the very successful "Histoire du livre depuis ses origines jusqu'Ă  nos jours" which was first published by Hetzel in 1880 and went through several editions. Highly curious.

Contemporary French green glazed boards, smooth spine gilt, brown lettering piece in second compartment, headcap chipped with loss, extremities worn all round, portion of outer blank margin of title-page torn away (with loss of one letter on the verso), probably to remove a former library stamp, and aiii (touching two letters) both leaves repaired, some age toning throughout (not objectionably). Our copy is PRICED throughout (the Grolier Club copy is not) and furthermore it CONTAINS the valuable 80-page Index (which the Grolier Club copy does not). Catalogue of the posthumous sale of the very important library, "universal in scope" according to the Preface, belonging to… Read more
