Description:

[A survey of British canals and inland waterways]. Hannover: H. M. Pockwitz, 1780. First edition ([xii], iv, [ii], 165) with nine (of ten) fine hand-coloured folding sketches of canal installations, maps of English canals and waterways. Absent Tabula VII . Quarto (26.5 cm) in full calf, gilt titles and decorations to spine, rubricated edges. Text in German. With the bookplate of Adolph Hugel. To conduct a survey of  British canals George III selected the German engineer Johann Hogrewe who, a few years after visiting Britain, published this report which in addition to describing British canals also discusses canals from an historical perspective as well as describing those found right across Europe, from the Netherlands to Russia. (Well, it does make for a more substantial volume.) Spine skilfully repaired, new matching endpapers; tips and edges a bit worn. First few pages of text lightly toned and with a few spots; otherwise a clean, solid copy.

Description:

Champaign-Urbana: University of Illinois, 1968. Second edition, revised and expanded (pp. 389, index). Octavo (23.5 cm) in brown cloth with complimentary pictorial dust jacket. An update of the first edition published in 1943, twenty-five years previous. The geographical, historical and cultural border here is the Mississippi, more or less (For convenience, Texas is moved east of the river). Includes many apparently ephemeral journalistic pieces as well as the more enduring works (of Downing, for example). Its scope, however, does not admit Olmsted’s tour of  the slave states, which, while not narrowly addressed to architectural matters, certainly was relevant to the culture in which the architecture grew.  A fine copy in a very good dust jacket (minor wear to the extremities) in protective Brodart sleeve.

Description:

London: Printed for Walter Kettilby, at the Bishop’s Head in St. Paul’s Church-Yard, 1690. First edition (pp. [vi], 338). Quarto (24 cm) in contemporary plain full calf, five raised bands (corners worn); skilfull repairs to spine. Ms note on ffep dated 1690, “Read over on board ye Sterling Castle in his majesties fleet.” Partial signature (“Charles A...”) in similar hand on pastedown. “R West” on title page. This is the first appearance of Overall’s work.  John Overall (1561- 1619), Bishop of Norwich, was one of a team of biblical translators who worked with Lancelot Andrewes to produce the King James Bible. The original of the Convocation Book (1606) ran afoul of James I’s reading of certain points respecting support the hand of the Almighty might lend to the absolute monarch who crossed belligerently into the territories of another absolute monarch (Can God serve two masters?) and was only preserved in manuscript by a succession of bishops until published with an introduction… Read more

Description:
London: W. Strahan et al., 1763. First edition (xxxi, 480) with two engraved plates (System of Botany, Elevation of Greenhouse). Octavo, in modern brown three-quarter leather over marbled paper covered boards, five raised bands, gilt lettering and titles to spine, matching endpapers. The breathless title relieves me of the responsibility of summarizing the contents of this scarce book by a ‘Nusery-man of Glocester’; Fussell (More, 68) makes passing reference, noting the nursery, at least, did well enough and was still being carried on by a daughter into the 1820’s. A handsome modern binding and a clean text. A very nice copy indeed of a scarce work.

London: Baldwin and Craddock for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, 1832- 40. First edition, in three volumes (viii, 534; viii, 595, index; 129, 82, 151, 27, 40, index). Tall octavo bound in fine modern three-quarter dark green leather over contrasting green cloth, modern endpapers. Illustrated by a large number of steel engravings. The two volumes of general treatises are augmented here by a third volume comprising detailed reports of the practices of ‘experienced agriculturists’ and of the management of certain, especially successful farms. The first volume of the collection describes the ‘farm economy’ (valuation, rents, capital expenses) and general resources (manures, soils, drainage). The second volume is an account of methods of animal husbandry (crops, feeds, and feeding); while volume three is a collection of reports of select farms, Flemish agriculture, ornamental planting, etc. The Society which published this work, founded by Lord Brougham, was… Read more
