The full title of this book is The Backwoods of Canada: Being the Letters of the Wife of an Emigrant Officer, Illustrative of the Domestic Economy of British America. It was first published, in the UK, in 1836. This is a facsimile reprint. Catharine Parr Traill (1802-1899) was a successful English writer when she married a British officer who, in 1832, was posted to Canada. She was wholly unprepared for the struggles they endured while establishing themselves in the vast, still unexplored, wilderness. But she remained positive and upbeat, wrote many letters to her mother about her experiences, and they became this book. The book was meant to serve as guidance and advice for other immigrants, but it became a best-seller, and a classic, of both social history and nature writing. This is the first impression (1977) of the Folio Society's Barchester Towers, the second novel in the Chronicles of Barsetshire series by the great English writer Anthony Trollope (1815-1882). It is about the politics and romances surrounding the leading clergy of the cathedral city of Barchester. It is illustrated with woodcuts by the British artist Peter Reddick.

As with all Folio Society books, it is printed on lovely paper. Olive and gray boards, with a gold design on the spine, in a pale gray slipcase.

There's quite a lot of wear to the slipcase. The book is in mint condition.

This is a stated first US edition of Baron Philippe: The Very Candid Autobiography of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Rothschild (1902-1988) co-wrote the book with his companion, the British writer and theater director Joan Littlewood (1914-2002)Philippe, Baron de Rothschild was a member of the Rothschild banking dynasty who became a Grand Prix race-car driver, a screenwriter and playwright, a theatrical producer, a film producer, a poet, and one of the most successful wine growers in the world. He led a fascinating life and this is an excellent book.This copy (331 pages) has no dust jacket and the spine is somewhat faded, as is the gold lettering on the spine.Inside, the book was pressed open to the center photo spread, and again at another photo spread at the back of the book.Other than that, there's no evidence that it was read. All of the pages are clean, clear and creamy white.

This is a copy of Bartholomew's Clan Map, produced in 1975 by the Scots genealogist Sir Iain Moncreiffe of That Ilk (1919-1985). It was produced from an original painting by the Scottish artist Don Pottinger (1919-1986).
The map features 'The Lands', 'The Arms', and 'The Crests'. The central map delineates the clan territories and is framed by an array of 170 heraldic shields along with their crests and mottoes. It is based on the clan map as it was around the time of King James VI (1566-1625).
I haven't opened this map completely--just enough to take the photos shown. Photo #2 is taken from a collector's site, which says that it's appr 38" x 29".
This map has been sitting in a drawer since 1975. There are little bits of wear to the covers and the original price tag is on it, but you can steam that off. As far as I can tell, it's in perfect condition.

This is an unread first edition of Baudelaire, written by the English journalist Joanna Richardson and published in 1990.
It is a full biography of the French poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), which was a best-seller and very well received by critics.
It's a big book with few photos.
It is mylar-wrapped--you can remove it if you like. The spots you see on the cover are from the price tag. No one has ever read this book, or even opened it. It is in mint condition.

This is a reproduction of Before the Bath, a charming painting by the Canadian artist Paul Peel (1860-1892), who was on his way to becoming an acknowledged master when he died at age 31. The subject is two little girls whose nanny is trying to persuade to come for their bath.
The print was purchased at the Tate Gallery in London in 1982 and framed the following year, in a distressed wood frame with gold interior trim. It is signed and dated by the framer.
The total size of this piece is 19" x 21". It's heavy as it's covered in glass; any odd marks in the photos are reflections.

This is a first edition (1929) of The Bellamy Trial, by the American writer Frances Noyes Hart (1890-1943).
It is the first legal drama written by an American author and defined the genre of the court-room mystery dramas. It was made into a film in 1929.
Noyes wrote the book in 1927. In 1929, it became part of the Front Page Mystery Series, published by Doubleday Doran. So this is a first edition from that series, rather than from the book's original printing.
The Bellamy Trial is an "absorbing story of the mis-alliances and crossed lives of two couples from the gentry of upstate New York; one wife has been murdered, and the husband and the other wife are the accused," so say 20th Century Crime & Mystery Writers. It is based on the infamous Hall-Mills murder case of 1922. Only the Lindbergh kidnapping received more media attention than this case; The Bellamy Trail also illustrates American society of the 1920s and depicts the first 'media circus'.

The Beloved Returns, also known as Lotte in Weimar, is a 1939 novel written by the German writer and Nobel Laureate Thomas Mann (1975-1955). It is about a difficult and unconsummated romance.
This is the fourth printing of the first American edition, dated 1957.
453 pages. Dark blue boards with the title impressed on the cover and gold lettering on spine.
The gold has worn off the spine a little. But this book does not appear to have been read. It's in mint condition.
Note: I also have a leather-bound copy of Mann's The Magic Mountain listed here, as well as a first edition of The Holy Sinner, and a first edition of Joseph the Provider.

This is the catalog from the 1995 Vancouver exhibit of the works of Bernard Cathelin (1919-2004).
Bernard Cathelin was a French painter and a member of the School of Paris which included Matisse, De Buffet and Brianchon. Famous for oil paintings and lithographs with a richness of texture and vivid colour, his three favorite themes were still life, landscapes and portraits of women. In 1995, Cathelin was elected to the Legion of Honour; also in 1995, a retrospective exhibition at the Musée de Valence established a new attendance record for the museum. And, at the end of the same year, he exhibited in Vancouver, at the Buschlen Mowatt Gallery, which produced this catalog.
The covers of this book are not in the best of shape, but the rest of it is. The front endpaper is signed by the artist, in red, and accompanies a hand-written note. There is biographical information about the artist, plus about 30 pages of pieces that could be framed.

This book has not been opened or read. There are no marks of any kind in or on it.
It is bright blue with plain covers and black design and lettering on the spine.
The dust jacket is clean and clear with minor shelf wear at the edges and a 1/2" tear on the back.

This is a second impression, first US printing, of The Best of Sail, by the British soldier, historian, sailor and author Basil Lubbock (1876-1944). It is a collection of 36 paintings of famous clipper ships, and accompanying historical notes, excerpted from the famous three-volume set, Sail: The Romance of the Clipper Ships, first published in 1927.
The three-volume collected set was created from the original front cover illustrations created for the British magazine, Blue Peter, by the legendary maritime painter, Jack Spurling (1870-1933). The text includes the history of each ship, along with lore and legend, and is a treasure for those who value stories of the sea. This single volume is a selection of the 36 most significant ships featured in the original three-volume set. This is a 7th printing of the first edition of the international best-seller, Betty Crocker's International Cookbook.Betty Crocker is a pseudonym used by General Mills.It is 372 pages of recipes, including the index and numerous color photographs.Recipes are of all types, and from many cultures.It has not been used, but I had to remove the front endpaper because someone wrote on it. And there is a thumb print on the very bottom of the title page.Other than that, the book is pristine.The dust jacket has a little bit of wear, just from years of being moved around, but is in very good condition

This is a matched pair of hymns, published in 1955:

The back cover, and consequently the last page of music, is missing here. It's four pages of music, in very good condition, plus the front cover, which is in frail condition.

It was published that year by Viking; this copy was issued by the Book of the Month club the same year.It is a political thriller, historical novel and family saga. A psychological mystery about Russian revolutionaries preparing to overthrow the Tsarist regime.435 pages.As you can see, the dust jacket is not in good shape. There was a splash to the spine. That carried through to the spine of the book, which is not stained but is a little wrinkled. The covers are unmarked, with no damage of any kind.Inside, the book is in perfect condition.
