London: Sotheby's, 1948. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 8vo. 68 pp. 715 lots. 12 b/w reproductions. Original green wrappers, stapled as issued. With printed list of prices and buyers' names. Scarce Sotheby's sale catalogue in which is described "a selected portion of the valuable library at Patshull House, Woverhampton, the property of the Rt. Honble. the Earl of Dartmouth, G.C.V.O. including: an exceedingly important collection of sixteenth century maps of Ireland, important early manuscript maps of Bermuda, Dublin, England, the Phillipine Islands and Tangier. The Bermuda map, almost certainly created in 1609 by Sir George Somers, is justifiably considered to THE EARLIEST SURVIVING MAP OF BERMUDA (see below). The catalogue also describes important manuscripts relating to the American War of Independence; colour plate books, the property of the late Sir Mayson M. Beeton, K.B.E.; manuscript charts by Nicholas Comberford, the property of Mrs. M.E. Luard, Upper Court, Kermerton, near Tewkesbury;… Read more

Description:
Darmstadt: Im Verlag der Großherzoglichen Invalide und Soldaten-Waisen-Unstalt / Gedruckt vei L.C. Wittich, 1831. 8vo. (155 x 93 mm). viii, 532, [9] pp. Contemporary green morocco by Simon Stiebel of Marburg (ticket on recto of free endpaper), both covers inset with petit-point embroidery: a flower at center enclosed by a leafy lozenge, with an umbrella-like bloom above and below, all worked in shades of green, yellow, and pink, raised bands with gilt rules, spine panels with blind-stamped floral ornament, gilt titling, gilt-rolled turn-ins, green endpapers, all edges gilt. Corners and ends of spine a little rubbed, occasional offsetting in text. In excellent condition, completely unsophisticated, and suitable for exhibition. An important discovery: this appears to be the only surviving binding by the Jewish Master Bookbinder Simon Stiebel of Marburg. Stiebel was born ca. 1807, the son of Mendel Stiebel. Clearly Simon (a.k.a. Schiemeon) was a binder of exceptional abilities: the present specimen is… Read more

Description:
Vienna: Kaiserlich-koniglichen Hof- und Staatsdruckerei [for Alfred Holder], 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 volumes, large quarto (28 x 22 cm). 18, 618; 18, 680 pp. with 2 chromolithographic plates and more than 250 illustrations of views, scenes, art, pagan rituals and folk customs and costume, sacred architecture, domestic architecture, flora and fauna, jewelry, and much more. Original publisher's gold cloth, elaborately embossed and gilt. An absolutely beautiful copy. "Bohemia" (Greater Austria) from the famous "Osterreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild" series, complete sets of which are now unobtainable. Initiated in 1883 and largely compiled by the Crown Prince Rudolf himself, the entire work extended to 24 volumes (1885-1902). Ultimately the series contained a total of 12,596 text pages, 4529 illustrations, and 587 different articles, of which 432 were written by co-contributors. The present volume is a veritable encyclopedia of late nineteenth-century Bohemia and… Read more

Description:
Augsburg and Nuremberg, 1820. A quantity of five sheets, the largest being 28.5 cm x 19 cm, the smallest 18 cm x 16.5 cm. The specimens offered here are smaller portions of what once were larger sheets. One of the samples was apparently used as a back wrapper at some point as is suggested by the stab holes along the right side. ADDED: an assortment of 13 small sheets of marbled and decorative papers of varying sizes (18th-20th century). Small but very useful (and very pretty) group of 5 gold-printed Brocade Relief papers. With one exception, the makers of these brocade papers have been identified. We believe that the present assemblage will prove to be a joyful source of bibliographic inquiry for students young and old, as it offers a small sampling of luxurious decorated papers from the early 18th century (Abraham Mieser of Nuremberg) to the early 19th century (G.N. Renner & Abel of Augsburg). NB: We have taken the liberty of adding an assortment of 13 small sheets of later decorative papers.… Read more

Description:
Paris: Ch. Bosse, 1927. FIRST EDITION. Softcover. Very good. Small 4to. xvi, 235, [3] pp. Bound in original wrappers, as issued. Preserved in a protective cloth case. Uncut and unopened. The essential resource for the study of provenance of medical books, still unsurpassed. Ours is one of only 50 on fine Velin paper, rare thus in private ownership. In fact, we have located only two other copies on Velin in commerce in the last 90 years: Maggs' 1983 Catalogue 1037, and (more "recently") at Swann Galleries 19 Oct. 2000. This formidable work is profusely illustrated, with 212 reproductions of bookplates and "super ex-libros" stamps that appear on the covers of bookbindings. There are 688 authoritative bio-bibliographical notices of French book collectors of the 18th- and 19th-century, all of whom (of course) were medical doctors and pharmacists. Olivier and Vailet even include coverage of early hospital libraries. The names of the owners are usefully arranged in alphabetical order. Contains an… Read more

Description:
London: Bernard Quaritch, 1889. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Folio. 222 pp., 1512 items described. Modern neat brown cloth (NOT ex-library). Still valuable for tracing the provenance of 1,500 notable bindings, this is the enlarged edition of Quaritch's famous Catalogue 93 (first issued in November 1888), here containing the addition of three indispensable indexes extending 22 pages printed in very small type, plus a valuable introduction on the history of bookbinding written by Bernard Quaritch himself, who was that time was considered the leading authority on the subject. The indexes: Authors and Titles; Works in Modern Languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish); Special Subjects including Americana, Liturgica, Manuscripts, Music, Romances of Chivalry, Unique Books, and Books Printed on Vellum; Owners, Book-Collectors, and Libraries; and finally an Index of Binders and Binding. Description:
London: Bernard Quaritch, 1897. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Folio. 172 pp., 858 items described. With 22 chromolithograph plates of bindings. Modern neat brown cloth (NOT ex-library). Still valuable for tracing the provenance of notable bindings. While technically a "bookseller's catalogue," this awe-inspiring tome commences with a perfect copy of the Mazarine (Gutenberg) Bible, laughably cheap at GBP 4000, followed by these special sections: 1. English and Scottish Bindings, A. D. 1160-1880. 2. Flemish and Dutch Bindings, 1300-1800. 3. German Bindings, 1430-1790. 4. Spanish bindings, 1250-1776. 5. Italian Bindings, 1460-1786. 6. French bindings, 1510-1880. 7. Oriental Bindings, 1500-1600. 8. Books upon binding. The Grolier Club has only the 1897 edition which lacks all the chromolithographs and consists of only 158 pp., thereby lacking the three indespensible indexes on pp. 159-172. The University of Michigan copy of the 1897 edition has been digitized and is available online, but as it is… Read more

Description:
Paris: Lefevre, 1836. Large 8vo. (243 x 155 mm). With 5 full-page steel-engraved plates printed on India paper and mounted on thick paper (tissue guards foxed as commonly, with offsetting on plates and text opposite). Contemporary French dark red polished calf, covers scuffed spine darkened and a little worn at head and tail, corners bumped, but an attractive binding, perfectly sound and completely unsophisticated. With faults, and priced correctly. Late Empire binding by Rene Simier (1772-1843) of restrained elegance, exhibiting his unsurpassed technical ability. In the nineteenth century, Simier "pere" - with Joseph Thouvenin - brought the art of French bookbinding to its apogee. In his long and distinguished career Simier was appointed binders to Empress Marie-Louise, Louis XVIII, Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Sicily (subsequently Duchesse de Berry). According to Ramsden ("French Bookbinders 1789-1848") Simier's "variety and technique were superb; he had no superior and few rivals during his career."… Read more

Description:
Vienna, 1842. First Edition. Very good. 8vo. (200 x 130 mm). 88 pp. + 1 folding letterpress table recording donations. Original blue printed wrappers. With a 14-page letter on German Catholic immigrants to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and provincial Pennsylvania. In this unassuming and almost completely unknown journal are many communications from Catholic missionaries to North America, including is a forgotten 25-page letter from Pierre Jean De Smet, S.J. , describing his first mission to the Flathead in western Montana. This marks the beginning of one of the longest-lived Catholic missions to Indians in the United States. The Flathead had petitioned the Church for years to send a "Blackrobe," and De Smet was received with enthusiasm. The present letter contains a good deal of information not published elsewhere. De Smet wrote this letter to his bishop, Rosati of St. Louis; it is different from the letter he wrote to the Jesuit Superior General Jan Roothan that was subequently published in the… Read more

Baltimore, 1920. First Edition. Small 4to. Complete volume 53. Library buckram, a little worn, original wrappers (soiled) bound in. Ex-library copy, priced accordingly. Groundbreaking experiments that earned George Whipple the Nobel prize for his discovery that liver fed to anemic dogs reverses the effects of the anemia, leading directly to successful liver treatment of pernicious anemia. "The first treatments for pernicious anemia were devised by George Whipple, who studied anemia in dogs. He was studying the effects of blood loss on dogs, and set out to investigate the effects of diet on anemia. Whipple bled dogs until they became anemic, feeding them special diets and noting the effects on their recovery. He found that dogs which ate large amounts of liver recovered quickly from anemia due to blood loss. He went on to investigate the effects of liver consumption on pernicious anemia, and in 1920 he published a paper [i.e. the present paper] on how eating liver had beneficial effects on sufferers… Read more

Description:
Massena, NY, 1812. Softcover. Very good. Dates: 1812-1829. Small 4to. 12 pp. Stitched. Primary source material for the study of animals as property in rural America at the turn of the 19th-century. This small but fascinating manuscript is of a type that is rarely encountered. It describes the distinctive markings of animals belonging to 47 different owners, all residing in an upstate New York village located on the Canadian border. The MS entries are dated from April 7, 1812 to June 13, 1829. The compiler of the MS was the Town Clerk, J.B. Andrews, Jr. Our MS pre-dates by more than 30 years the first American Brand Book that is described by William Reese in "Brand Books in the Princeton Collections of Western Americana," PULC LXVII, 2 (Winter, 2006): pp. 237-251. We quote: "The history of the printed brand book in the United States begins in Utah in 1850, concurrent with the founding of the Mormon colony at Great Salt Lake and the establishment of a printing press there.
