[From the preface]: "April 1852." In the early 1850s, Japan still maintained sakoku, a policy of isolationism established in 1635 and intended to minimize foreign influence. The governments of Britain, the United States, and Russia, were each determined to be the first to benefit from trade with Japan. Within Japan, there was a growing and passionate debate about how to respond to foreign incursions. Two major camps formed: one claimed it was necessary to use foreign technology in order to repel invasions; the other argued that only traditional Japanese methods should be employed. Our scroll depicts the integration of Western weapons into this faction's strategy. This is a finely illustrated scroll with bird's-eye views of Lord Hisaakira Kano's well-equipped private army at a shimoyashiki (a secondary estate) outside of central Edo. It depicts military exercises which took place a year before Commodore Matthew Perry's first arrival. The scroll vividly illustrates format ... Read more

Schröter established in Lilienthal one of the finest observatories in Europe, equipping it with the best instruments, all of which were paid for by George III. "For thirty years the observatory at Lilienthal was a center of astronomical research and was visited by foreign astronomers...Schröter was the first to observe the surface of the moon and the planets systematically over a long period. He made hundreds of drawings of lunar mountains and other features, and discovered and named the lunar rills."-D.S.B., XII, p. 226. First edition of this extremely rare and early work on the metronome; OCLC does not locate a copy in the U.S. Bürja (1752-1816), professor of mathematics at the Berlin Military Academy and a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences at Berlin, wrote many books on mathematics, hydraulics, and scientific instruments. He was the first to call into question the rigor of Lagrange's exposition of the calculus. This is an early and noteworthy book on the metronome of the author's own invention. The development of a reliable instrument to denote the speed at which a musical composition is to be performed took several centuries to be realized. Galileo left a scheme for a pendulum time-marker in his papers and in the 17th and 18th centuries many scientists, instrument makers, and musicians including Thomas Mace, Etienne Loulié, Joseph Sauveur ... [Peking: 2nd Preface dated 1614]. First edition, and very rare, of this work on the gnomon, one of the first astronomical measuring instruments, and its uses in astronomy and surveying. This work is important in the history of astronomy as it states here for the first time in China the doctrine that the earth is spherical. Ursis is also the first to state in China, in the present work, that the earth is divided into spaces separated by meridians and parallels. He uses geometrical analysis of planetary motions and the Euclidean geometry necessary for applying it to gnomonics, stereographic projections of the astrolabe, and in surveying. The beginning of the text discusses the five questions regarding latitude. In one of the woodcuts, the earth ... Read more

The very rare sale catalogue of the large and important library formed by one of the great collectors of 18th-century Germany. Rink (1670-1746), professor of law and history at the University of Altdorf, was one of the leading international lawyers of his time and an active writer in the areas of his specialties. He formed several outstanding collections, including one of medals (a catalogue of which was published in 1766), a natural history cabinet, and an outstanding library.
