Titled "Border and Bastille" it is written by the English journalist/author George Alfred Lawrence and it is the story of his life from the time he left England and attempted to join the Confederate Army because he sympathized with the Southern cause and wished to experience and write about the War. He appears to have spent more time as a prisoner than on the battlefield as he was captured quite soon upon arrival in America [further biographical notes follow]. Many references to Baltimore and Maryland. The book was printed in London and is dated 1863. Of particular interest of this book is that there is a 4 page handwritten letter tipped into the back of the book and this letter is written by the author himself, George Lawrence. Boston Massachusetts MA. Fair. 1903. Hardcover. Wonderful all handwritten, 9" x 11" hardback daily, hour by hour, journal from an unspecified fire department but almost certainly Boston. Dated July 1903 through Oct. 1903. The day of horse drawn fire engines. 300 pages. No missing pages. The log is written in black ink with all the fire calls written in red ink. Contains information on the care of the engines and horses, roll call, who's in charge of meals, who's absent and on vacation, fire call addresses and names of all the fire men, etc, etc. Items too numerous to mention. A typical days entry: Sunday Oct 4th 1903. 12am York relieved Ryan on house patrol. 1am Water in Engine 38 and 39 at 4th and 3rd gauge . On offer is an 1844 reign of Louis-Philippe pamphlet/bulletin announcing regulations regarding the Jewish community in France including a listing of Synagogues, describing the work and roles of Rabbis etc. Very comprehensive details of the state of the Jewish community of mid-19th century France. France. Fair with no dust jacket. 1793. Ephemera. On offer is a fine example of a military certificate of good conduct issued by one of the French Revolutionary armies. The certificate is dated 25 Prairial Year 2 (French revolutionary calendar) , corresponding to June 15th, 1793. The recipient is a soldier who is serving in the 1st Battalion. The certificate commends his service and valour. The certificate is signed by several officers. One ‘signature’ reads simply Commandant en Chef or Commander in Chief. At that time, the Commander in Chief of the Army of the Alps was the famed French General François Christophe Kellermann. Kellerman was a life-long soldier, entering the Royal Army at age 15 and later rising to command revolutionary troops and then serving under Napoleon as one of his Marshals. France. Good with no dust jacket. 1850. Ephemera. On offer is is an excellent explanation of a Roman Catholic teaching in mid-19th century France. The manuscript is titled Instruction – Sur les Qualites de la Confession (Instruction – On the Qualities of Confession). It opens with the Latin quotation of the Biblical verse of John 20: 23 – Quorum remiseritis pecata (sic) et quorum remittuntur eis et quorum retinueritis retenta sunt (Whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven them, and whose sins you shall retain they are retained). This verse served as a cornerstone of clerical authority for many many centuries and was a source of clerical power, especially among a rural, less-educated population. The author is unknown but clearly a priest. This may have been written as a sermon or perhaps as a talk. Throughout the text, there are corrections, strikeouts and edits which show that this was very much a document that was laboured over. It is an outstanding description of the… Read More

On offer is a fine example of diplomatic correspondence in late 18th century FranceThe letter was written by the Danish Vice-Consul, Pierre Jean Vanbougwerss, to the Intendant of the Generalite or Region of La Rochelle. In his beautifully written letter, he objects to the imposition of a tax: Suplie Humblement Pierre Jean Vanbougwerss Vice-Consul de sa Majeste Le Roy de Danemark, disant avoir ete comprin a l'imposition de la capitation de l'annee mille sept cent soixante six pour la somme de trente six livres dix huits sols. Fair. 1810. On offer is an interesting and original book of historical significance being an inscribed copy of Blackstone's Commentaries Volume Two, Part Two, having further manuscript notes handwritten by two noted Loyalists. This copy belonged to Loyalist William Wylly as evidenced by his bookplate. He was the first King's Council in New Brunswick, later living in the Bahamas, appointed solicitor-general and surrogate of the court of vice-admiralty. In 1804 he was appointed advocate-general of the vice-admiralty court, in 1812 he became chief justice, and in 1822 chief justice of the island of St. Vincent. The stamped inscription states: To his friend Cd. D. Colden, aka Cadwallader D. Colden, also a Loyalist during the Revolution. Colden studied law under Wylly. He was mayor of New York from 1818 - 1821 and also served as Senator from 1825-1827.
