Carte de visite photograph of Frances Coryell (here spelled Coryel), "a Hindoo girl buried alive by her heathen parents," sold to raise funds for the Women's Foreign Missionary Society. The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society was a Protestant woman's missionary organization founded by Methodists in Boston in 1869. The story of Frances Coryell (raised in an orphanage, nursed by a goat, now learning to sing hymns) is told on the back of the card by Clementina Butler, a missionary to India and zealous supporter of the Society. By 1870, a woman in Ithaca, NY, had taken up Frances's cause and was paying for her education. Although you could purchase one for 25 cents in 1869, we have only seen one other example of this card. That one was credited on the verso to H.P. Chapman of Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

"This study of Calamity Jane will attempt to ascertain the facts of her career, so far as they can be determined, and to evaluate the various accounts left by her many chroniclers. Dust jacket has an old price written in ink on the front flap and a few small chips and tears. Arranged alphabetically, with hundreds of entries providing historical information, folklore, etc.

San Francisco: Bolte and Braden, 1916. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 299 pp, with numerous illustrations from photographs, in original pictorial boards with interesting faux-hinge design. Rubbing to edges, small splits starting at joints, dent to top edge of rear board, contemporary gift inscription on front free endpaper. Otherwise unmarked, clean and sound. Sanders was a British physician who found himself in California in the course of his work as a ship's doctor. He took a patient to visit a mineral spring resort and, impressed with the results, decided to remain in California to "make a tour of it and find out all about these springs, using the railroad when available--walking and bicycling when not." He writes in the Introduction that he traveled from Klamath Springs at the northern border of the state all the way to San Diego, visiting "scores of springs," taking samples of their waters for analysis, and concluding that many had "decided curative properties." The subtitle sums it up: "Comprising choice selections of prose and poetry, tales and anecdotes, historical, descriptive, humorous, and sentimental pieces, mainly culled from the various newspapers and periodicals of the Pacific Coast." Authors represented include Bret Harte, John Bidwell, Bayard Taylor, E.C. Kemble, T. Starr King, Mark Twain, and many others.

Appendix by Count Dr. Cesare Calciati and Dr. Mathias Koncza, Original dark red cloth with illustration of climbers on a steep slope on front board. Corners lightly bumped, some rubbing to edges of boards, spine lettering dulled. Binding tight, contents clean. The Workmans, an American husband and wife team, were wealthy, zealous, and energetic explorers who together made many expeditions to the Himalayas. Fanny, a suffragist as well as a bit of a publicity hound, made sure the world knew of her achievements as a pioneering female climber. (Among other achievements, she held the women's altitude record for 28 years after her conquest of 23,000-ft Pinnacle Peak in 1906.) Athol Springs, NY: Carter-Heath, 1930. Softcover. Very good-. 32 pp, in original stapled wrappers. Light handling wear, one gathering detached from staples, which are rusted; about very good. Carter was a self-described "reformed "drunkard, dope fiend, criminal, leader and character in the underworld" who found religion in 1922 while incarcerated at the Arizona State Prison. Upon his release the same year, he began conducting revivals in churches and prisons around the country. By 1935, newspapers were reporting that Carter had visited 3000 correctional institutions in North America.

New York: Charles Scribner's sons, 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. pp xix, 366, + 4 (ads). Extensively illustrated with photographs (some colored), 2 maps. Red cloth w/gilt lettering, top edge gilt, mounted illustration of bighorn sheep. Most of rear free endpaper lacking, lower corners bumped, otherwise sound and clean. Account of a botanical/zoological expedition and hunting trip to little-known parts of southern Arizona and the Pinacate region of northern Mexico. Described by Joseph Wilder, editor of the Journal of the Southwest, as "a great evocation of a real goddamned expedition, quite unlike the pantywaist excursions nowadays indulged in, all freeze-dried, lightweight, and sensitive to the land. This is manly stuff, natural history the way it used to be done: with a wagon train of provisions, stalking and killing the great desert beasts of the Papagueria, all for science.

Leather partially split at lower front joint, else very good; clean and sound. Signature of publisher A. Eymery on verso of half title, under the statement "Tout exemplaire qui ne sera pas revetu de ma signature, sera réputé contrefait." Durdent (c. 1776-1819) was a writer of poetry, fiction, and historic and literary compilations.

Publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering and vignette of soldiers on front board. Former mercantile library copy, with bookplate on front pastedown and a few stamps. No external library markings. Corners lightly bumped, some chipping/short tears to cloth at spine ends. One of the folding maps is quite delicate and has numerous tears (partially mended on the verso with archival tape), with some minor loss. Vandeleur, a highly decorated officer in the Scots Guards, participated in the Unyoro Expedition in 1895, the Niger Expedition in 1897, and served with the Egyptian Army in the Soudan expedition of 1898. Second and preferred edition, with folding map. 25.5 cm, 283 pp. in original pictorial cloth boards, beautifully illustrated with 25 full-page photogravures and many additional illustrations in the text. Boards are lightly spotted, but still quite attractive; internally clean and sound. The topographical map, titled "Map of the Lake Louise Region Showing Part of the Summit Range of the Canadian Rocky Mountains" is laid in at the front and is in fine condition. The author was an early explorer of the Canadian Rockies who made several first ascents, including Temple, Aberdeen, Niblock, and Indefatigable. In a 1941 article in the American Alpine Journal, climber J. Henry Scattergood described the book as "delightful," praising Wilcox's "exquisite descriptions of Lake Louise, Valley of the Ten Peaks (then called by him Desolation Valley) and neighborhood." Shields (1846-1925) wrote extensively on sporting topics under the pen-name Coquina before establishing Recreation: A Monthly Magazine Devoted to Everything the Name Implies in 1894. Between 1897 and 1902, he was head of the Campfire Club of America. In this book, he offers practical information on a range of outdoorsy topics, including clothing and personal equipment, bedding and sleeping bags, tents, guns and rifles, fishing tackles, selecting horses and tack, selecting a good guide, food for camping, choosing a campsite, making a campfire, and what to do if you get lost. Watertown, NY. 4 pp on a single folded sheet, 8.5 x 11 inches when folded. Undated, but reprints an article from The American Mining News, August, 1901. Old creases from folding, staple holes at upper corner, all else very good. Dunbar, a broker, appeals to Americans for investment in this Canadian mining region, because "Canadians, besides lacking the mining experience, are too slow to take advantage of the golden opportunities which are being grasped by the more venturesome Americans." The Rainy River District, he says "possess advantages over almost every other gold mining country in the world," due to easily worked ores and ready access to fuel, water, transportation, and labor. There was apparently something to these claims, as the area is seeing a resurgence in commercial mining activity today. Not found in OCLC.

Good. 40 pp, in original pictorial wrappers, with many illustrations from photographs and 5 colored foldout maps. Rubbing to front cover, lower corner creased throughout, maps with a few small splits at folds, archival tape repair to spine; good. A very detailed guide for potential settlers, offering the usual superlatives, but also specifics about regulations (immigration, customs, homesteading, freight), practical considerations for travel, and statistics on population land prices, costs of improvements and buildings, etc. Separate sections describe the crops and livestock raised, transportation, schools and social conditions, and recreational and scenic offerings of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia.

Includes a list of members of the Association Syndicale des Hotels de Canns & Environs, followed by a brief history of the city, a list of local festivals, sporting opportunities, local excursions, etc.

Both volumes well rubbed at the corners, evidence of removal of an ink stamp on title page of Vol. I, which also has a small white stain on the front board. Text clean, bindings tight; very good. Featherstonhaugh, a British-born gentleman farmer and self-trained geologist, began his journey at Washington, D.C. and traveled to Detroit via Pittsburgh and Cleveland. From there he navigated by canoe on Lake Huron and Lake Michigan to Mackinac and Green Bay, and then via the Fox and Mississippi Rivers to Saint Anthony and Fort Snelling.
