Description:
New York: Viking Press, 1986. First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author on half-title page. Large 8vo. 582 pp. Bibliography; Index. Photo-reproductions. A fine copy of an important work on the origins and disappearing water in the Western United States. A social history of the politics of water in the United States and the environmental destruction wreaked by dams. "Cadillac Desert details the powerful and sometimes baleful influence the Bureau of Reclamation has had on the West - pushing it inexorably toward an edge from which, sooner or later, it is bound to fall off. A long book, packed with facts, Cadillac Desert is not going to be bedside reading for the millions; but millions ought to read it, because in its pages is visible the shape of a future that we have stubbornly refused to foresee." - Wallace Stegner. The book is on the Modern Library list of the 100 most important non-fiction books of the twentieth century.

Description:
Hong Kong: Libra Press, 1987. First Edition, Limited to 350 copies. Complete in 21 volumes plus The California Missions Bibliography. The books are in uniformly fine condition, in dustjackets (light occasional wear). From 1769 to 1823 Spain established twenty-one missions in Alta (or upper) California. These twenty-one missions were charged with converting the natives to Christianity, and provided an important strong-hold for Spain in Alta California. "Monsignor Weber's documentary studies on [the] California missions represent an important contribution that will take their place on the shelves next to the works of Engelhardt and Geiger." - Gary Kurtz, Catholic Historical Review LXVIII. The author, Monsignor Francis J. Weber, is a distinguished Catholic scholar, an Honorary Chaplain to His Holiness the Pope, and the archivist for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles at the San Fernando Mission, as well as a former professor of history at Queen of Angels Seminary.

New York: Hurd and Houghton, 1878. First Edition. Presentation, SIGNED to "Julia H. West, Cambridge, Oct., 1877. From the Publisher." 8vo. vi, [3], 10-344 pp. Frontispiece and 12 plates (with tissue guards) from photographs and sketches (including 6 after illustrations by William Keith but drawn by Thomas Moran or W.H. Gibson). Printed by the Riverside Press. Publisher's green cloth, decoratively stamped in black and gilt on front cover and spine, rear cover stamped in blind, all edges gilt. Slight smudge on front cover, else a fine, bright copy. Avery was one of the leading forces behind the "Overland Monthly," and became, with Bret Harte, one of its editors. This and a volume of poems from the "Overland" are all that remain of his literary output. The title is rather misleading. The book is primarily made up of narrative descriptions of California scenery, interspersed with a tiny bit of poetry. Descriptive sections include, "Mountain, Lake, and Valley," "Up the Western Slope," On the Summit (of…
