Original 6-page typescript (carbon copy) manuscript of Johns' 'Heroes of Africa' (a draft of the Chapter 'The Scot Who Walked Alone' - Chapter 4 of 'Biggles Book of Heroes' with significant similarities, but also a large number of textual / content differences). With a couple of pen corrections which may or may not be authorial. Undated, but c1959.

Near Very Good condition with minor fading to upper covers and tail of spine (where cloth has been exposed by chips to the dustwrapper). Strips of toning to endpapers and pastedowns. Inscribed by the author to the front endpaper "with best wishes from Lucy W. Bellhouse". No other inscriptions. In Fair dustwrapper, which has separated at the spine, and has large edge chips / tears. (The dustwrapper is now protected by an archival quality, transparent, non-adhesive cover, which can easily be removed if so desired).

Some sections have date codes to the corner which range from 1923 - 1938. Generally Good condition : the wrappers have significant loss to edges and spine and are in poor condition. There are ink annotations / updates to the Index of Neverax Racks, Fixtures & Fittings to the rear.

French language. 1st Edition, 1857. Good, tight condition in original marbled boards. The spine is almost completely missing. Endpapers and pastedowns have marks to the corners, but otherwise particularly clean, tight and bright internally (a candidate for restoration/rebacking). Ownership inkstamp to lower title page, and Karolinska Institute label to corner of front pastedown, but no other library markings.

Clear, removable, archival protective sleeve fitted to dust-jacket. Inscribed by Ian McEwan to front endpaper and dated (Sept 12th 1978).The inscription reads "To Alan, with love, Ian Sept 12. 1978".

Illustrated with photographic plates and fold-out map to the rear. Near Very Good condition due to inscriptions / pasted items. Presentation inscription "To Minnie Griffiths 1951 from Auntie with every good wish, Ethel Mildred Griffiths.". Pasted to the front endpaper, preliminaries, and rear pastedown are original photographs and Victorian carte de visites of the Griffiths, Gilmore Griffiths and Lloyd families (most with identifying ink annotations). Loosely inserted to the rear is a May 1952 postcard "Picnic Ground, Crystal Springs, Matamata" with inkstamp and notes, and an envelope 'For Emmie' containing loose photographs and a 3 page letter from Bill Griffiths (of Howick, Auckland, New Zealand) relating to the death of his father and providing / requesting genealogical material. A most interesting association copy.

Previous owner's name stamp / date to front pastedown. Pencil annotation to title page, beneath the author's name, "of Harbour Department, Board of Trade, 7 Whitehall Gardens S.W.1.".
