The First UK printing published by Publications from Pall Mall Ltd., London in 1937. The book was issued by the publishers as 'The Coronation Edition'. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Some pushing with very slight splitting to the extreme spine tips. The original blue publisher's boards remain very clean with just some tiny rubs to the lower corners. The gilt titling and decorations remain bright. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Light toning and spotting to the text-block and prelims. Mild offsetting to the blank end-papers with light spotting to the prelims with one small mark to the fore edge of the title and frontis pages. This edition was issued with two different wrappers. This is the more scarcer of the two and is a stiff glassine pictorial wrapper. The WRAPPER is in Very Good condition with edge-wear and loss to the spine ends and rear upper edges due to its fragility (see images). Some closed tears and nicks in places. Priced at '7/6 net' to the lower front flap. The… Read more

Description:
The second UK printing published by Eyre & Spottiswoode, London in 1945. The first post-war edition, second overall (The original edition, published by Country Life in 1939, is notably rare, as explained on the jacket blurb of the present edition 'the original edition of this book was published early in the war but destroyed by enemy action. The artist has coloured the plates for this edition'). The BOOK is in near Fine condition. The original publisher's beige cloth is very clean with titles in green to front board. A very light crease to the upper corner of some pages. Some very light tape remnant marks to the lower front and rear endpapers presumable where the tape from an old wrapper protector has offset. The pictorial WRAPPER is complete and is in exceptional near fine condition with just a small closed tear to the lower rear wrapper edge and a similar one to the upper front edge (The latter has a small tape remnant to the verso where this tear has been previously reinforced). Description:
The sole printing published by The Gadsby Gallery, Leicester in 1973. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just two very tiny rubs to the front cover. Folio. The book was originally published in an edition of 450 copies with card covers. There were also 12 special numbered copies bound by Trevor Hickman at The Brewhouse Press with a morocco spine, gilt titling to the spine and decorated cloth boards. The contents also included extra material and some additional tipped in colour plates. This copy is one of the STANDARD 450 copies (without the additional material) but has been bound in a very similar design to one of the special copies. Having compared this binding to one of the special copies, I strongly suspect that Trevor Hickman at The Brewhouse Press bound this copy. The contents include a John Piper chronology, 117 colour monochrome and B/W illustrations and a 52 item catalogue. A very handsome exhibition catalogue. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Description:
Published by Clover Hill Editions, London in 1977. Number 'XXX1' of only 80 special copies, printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press on Barcham Green handmade paper, watermarked 'Clover Hill' (made for Douglas Cleverdon in 1936). The BOOK is in Fine condition, bound in quarter-morocco and marbled boards. Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this title is considered by many to be the artist's most significant work. These engravings were initially printed in the Golden Cockerel edition in 1927. Jones, however, felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones agreed to 'Clover Hill Editions' reprinting the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present… Read more
