Wells, VT, 1871-1873. Leather bound. Leather account book with pocket. Good. 72 pages written, 62 blank. 15.5 x 10 cm. Leather notebook with flap and pocket, property of R.M.(W?) Lewis, Wells, VT. Handwritten notebook with 16 additional daily accounts using "Lake Austin Woolen Mill" letterhead for this cheese factories daily tally. Ledger describes what seems to be a cheese co-op with dividends divided per day, report of the season, most milk received in one day (June 16th - 9195 gallons?), days cheese was made per year (207), etc. Wells, VT rests on the edge of Rutland county and in 1870 the populations total was 430 people. In the early 1800's a dam was built on Lake St. Catherine which enabled industry such as a woolen mill, wood working shop, and cheese factory to thrive. Covers worn, joints cracked but holding, 2 cm. loss of leather to tail of spine.

Newark, NJ, 1917-1919. 13 pages. 4 pages from Delpark Inc., a NY-based clothing company seeking a patent to manufacture a new shirt collar. Contacting a solicitor to investigate the patents of its creator. Delpark seeks, in these documents, to purchase the collar's patent from the inventor, Edward J. Quigley, and his partner, William H. Stevens. 7 pages delineate the agreement between the two parties, permitting Delpark to make and sell the collar. 2 pages are a letter from Stevens, previous to the agreement, warning Delpark of infringing on the royalties of Quigley's invention. An article in The Haberdasher, January 1921, page 67, Turning a Byway Into a Buy Way - reports of the shop Edward J. Quigley & Co. is located at Astor Court, a private thoroughfare beside the Waldorf-Astoria, Mr. Quigley and his vice-president of the firm, William H. Stevens, fit custom-made shirts.

Muckensturm ran a well attended French style restaurant in Boston until Prohibition knocked on the door and destroyed nearly all fine dining establishments. An interesting copy of this renowned book - colored paper wraps issued by the New York publisher Dodge. Stiff paper wraps professionally restored, covers stained and chipped with 2 cm "nibble" at bottom corner. Interior crisp and clean.

Envelopes contain printed recipes (8 X 15 cm.) attributed to local authors along with personally collected recipes and handwritten recipes. Envelope headings: Soups, Fish, Meats, Poultry, Meat and Fish Sauces, Entrees, Eggs, Vegetables, Salads, Breads & Biscuits, Pastry and Cake, Frostings, Puddings, Etc., Ices and Sherbets, and Miscellaneous. Every printed recipe suggests the use of "Fleischmann's" yeast, along with a handful of suggestions for "Dromedary Brand Golden Dates and Date Nut Butter" and "Royal Baking Powder". Local advertisements adorn both front and flap of every envelope. Hygienic Societies were formed, to some extent, to limit the spread of communicable diseases, to repress prostitution, and the promotion of marriage/parenthood. With single OCLC record discovered (Kansas State University).

An array of dishes with some surprises, such as a recipe for "Hot Tamales" from a contributor (Helen E. Pelletreau) who had traveled to Corpus Christi. Helen Pelletreau was the third president of the Pennsylvania College For Women, and the first woman to hold the office. Pelletreau was chosen as Acting President after the prior person to hold the office resigned, and while trustees searched for a replacement. The committee, citing her exceptional business insight, then elected Miss Pelletreau as President, a title she kept for 14 years until her retirement in 1894. Pages lightly toned.
