Description:
Tallahassee, Florida, 1941. Very good. 11" x 8½". 22 leaves printed rectos only, upper left corner stapled. Pp. 21. Very good: title leaf detached and with moderate edge chips; first two leaves with a strip of toning along the right edge. This is the original typescript of a commencement speech delivered at a Florida HBCU that was presented by the longrunning president of a Texas HBCU, M.W. Dogan. Mathew Winfred Dogan was born in Mississippi in 1863. He served on the faculty of Rust University and Central Tennessee College before becoming president of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas in 1896. Wiley College, the oldest HBCU west of the Mississippi River, was founded by the Freedmen's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1873. Dogan was Wiley's seventh president, but only its second Black one, and held his position for 46 years, the longest tenure of any Wiley president. Under his watch, the school's faculty and administration soon turned predominately African American, the campus and…

Description:
New York: Carver Federal Savings and Loan Association, 1966. As new. 5½" x 8 3/8". Stapled wrappers. pp. [32]. As new in original illustrated, unused mailing envelope which is good due to the lack of a flap and some loss to the front panel. The 1967 edition of the CFSLA calendar is quite different from the others: it's essentially a short illustrated history of the bank itself, beginning with the initial meeting of Harlem residents who sought to create a community-owned banking institution for African Americans. Other months cover the bank's opening day, its expansion to other offices, its first church account and its first computer. The illustrator is unidentified.

Description:
Chicago, Illinois, 1960. Good. 11" x 8 1/2". Stapled mimeographed newsletter. Three leaves printed rectos only. About good: heavily creased at old folds; moderately stained and soiled. This is an issue of a rare monthly newsletter published by a little known African American student organization, the Chicago Youth Committee for Civil Rights (CYCCR). Most of what we know about CYCCR is found only in this newsletter, though the organization was given a brief mention in a scholarly article as one of a slew of student organizations that contributed to the development of civil rights activism on the University of Chicago campus in the early 1960s. Together with the NAACP and CORE, CCYCCR sponsored a variety of demonstrations including "wade-ins" at Rainbow Beach on Chicago's lake front. This newsletter is almost entirely devoted to upcoming demonstrations and protests and includes a calendar for December 1960 which lists a total of three picket lines, a protest and a kneel-in. The three picket lines…

Description:
Oakland, California: Oakland Unified School District, 1968. Very good -. 11" x 8½". Stapled printed thin card wrappers. Pp. V, 25; an additional two separate unrelated leaves laid in described below. Very good minus: last leaf fully detached and possibly lacking a rear wrapper; light dust-soiling and toning; a few penciled notations to one page. This is a rare publication detailing the history of Chinese Americans in California as well as the greater United States. In 1968, at the request of Mayor Joseph Alioto, a San Francisco Chinese Community Citizens' Survey and Fact-Finding Committee was formed. Its goal was to help "provide the many missing parts of the history of a very small minority group that played such a big part in the development of the western part of this country." This publication marks a section of that committee's work, and, according to its preface, it was likely part of a larger work, a "Multi-Ethnic Calendar" published by the Oakland Unified School District. That calendar was…

Description:
San Francisco, CA: The Whitaker & Ray Co, 1900. Very good. 8 3/8" x 5 5/8". Cloth over flexible boards. Pp. 57, [2]. Very good: covers lightly scuffed, soiled and creased; tiny tear and offsetting to ffep; two pages moderately spotted and two with a tiny closed tear; a bit of creasing at margins; lightly toned. This is a lovely cookbook composed exclusively of recipes by women in Sonoma County, California. The book holds 230 recipes in 17 categories including breads, salads, soups, pickles and fish. Sweets were the star, with sections for puddings, pudding sauces, pies, "frozen dainties," cakes and "confectionery." Each recipe noted the California "Miss" or "Mrs." responsible for its inclusion, and there were small quotes at the beginnings of most sections, such as "Love in a cottage and cottage pudding with it" and "'An't please your Honour,' quoth the peasant, 'This same dessert is very Pleasant.'" A segment devoted to "breakfast and luncheon dishes" included waffles, baked eggs and "codfish…

Description:
Washington, D. C.: National Education Association, 1965. Fine. 11" x 8 ½". Stapled, thin card pictorial wrappers. Pp. 24. Fine. From the overview: "In early 1963, the NEA Commission on Professional Rights and Responsibilities began planning for meetings to bring together leading educators and leaders in the civil rights movement. Through such confrontations, we hoped to clarify: (1) the responsibilities of the education profession for advancing civil rights; and (2) the obligation of the civil rights movement participants for making practical, constructive proposals to help educators to meet their responsibilities. "Over two days in May, 1965, members of over 100 organizations met to listen to civil rights and education leaders as well as meet in smaller groups to hash out the issues faced. They then created a proposed list of 25 actions that should be taken on the local and national level including, "take a clear stand on employment and assignment of teachers without regard to race; publicize it;…

Description:
London and Northampton: Robert Church & Roberts Limited, 1914. 8¼" x 10". Full red pebbled leather, front board titled in gilt. 40 pages of thick card leaves, with 40 black and white photographs inserted into windows. Photos measure 6" x 8" and none are captioned. Album good: moderate overall wear, heavily shaken but all held securely, small tears to the windows of many pages; photos very good plus or better. This is a corporate promotional album for Robert Church & Roberts Limited, a British clothing manufacturer. We know the company was active as early as 1888 and as late as 1918. We're able to date the photos due to one that shows a Singer Sewing wall calendar dated July 1914. Thus, many of these photos were likely taken at the cusp of a major change in labor, with many women soon shifting to work in war related industries. The images show working conditions at factories that made women's robes, blouses, undergarments and other clothing. The firm had a factory in London at 1 to 7 Long Lane as…

Description:
Mostly Georgia, 1984. Very good +. Eight commercial photo albums with mylar-covered gummed leaves containing a combined 969 color photos + large embroidered riding scarf, four jacket patches and a painted, heavily used helmet. Most photos measure approximately 3½" x 5" to 4" x 6" and around fifteen percent or more are captioned on versos. Generally very good plus or better, one of the albums good only due to water damage, a couple of albums a bit grubby as well; photos generally near fine or better. This is a collection of nearly 1,000 photographs and a few other items compiled by an outlaw biker from Georgia. Someone self-identifies in one of the albums, and there's a pistol license as well as an addressed envelope with the same name, but we can't be sure he's the compiler. At least two albums are from 1976 and 1977, and a lot of the photos in those albums involve members of The Outlaws; the other six albums, as well as the patches and helmet, focus on the Remaining Few South Georgia (RFSG)…

Description:
Rome, Italy: Various Publishers, 1948. Seven posters. All folded as issued, all but one near fine or better with dimensions and imperfections noted below. Translations of most of the text are available. This is a collection of posters which document early United States Cold War policy as well as the first covert operations of the CIA. The 1948 elections in Italy were the first since 1922 and the United States backed the Christian Democratic Party against the Popular Democratic Front (communist) and the Socialist Unity parties. According to Mario Del Pero in "The United States and 'Psychological Warfare' in Italy, 1948-1955" (The Journal of American History, Vol. 87, No. 4 (Mar., 2001), pp. 1304-1334) "The Italian elections of April 1948 are considered a crucial turning point of the early Cold War. The pro-Soviet Left was severely defeated at the polls, while the main Italian anticommunist party-the Christian Democrats gained an absolute majority in the new parliament. But those elections were also…

Description:
N.P.: N.P., 1970. Very good. 72 drawings in pencil, watercolor and/or crayon all either drawn directly on artist's board, or on sheets mounted to artist's board; the boards measuring from 14" x 10" to 15" x 12". 33 have proposed fabric swatches attached, with an additional two that are loose. Generally very good or better with overall light to moderate edge wear, though some corners show heavy wear; one sheet lacks the board to which it was presumably mounted. This is a collection of costume designs and fabric swatches by an accomplished artist who signed them "dik." The collection contains eight drawings for The Marriage of Figaro, five for Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine, 28 for Cabaret and 31 for Anything Goes. Each is a detailed character study and several of the characters are shown in multiple costumes. For Cabaret, there are eight different drawings for the character of Sally Bowles, five different for Fraulein Schneider and three for Fraulein Kos. Anything Goes includes five different for…

Mostly Watkins, New York, 1900. Very good +. 17 mounted black and white photographs. All but two measure approximately 5½" x 3¾" on larger card mounts. Two are captioned verso. Generally very good plus or better. This is a collection of Upstate New York cabinet cards depicting African Americans. 15 have photographer imprints with twelve of them being from Watkins, New York; the others are Waverly, Elmira and Auburn. The captions don't provide very much information as they lack last names. Still, a lovely collection of late 19th century African American photography.

[Washington, D.C.], 1993. Fine. 43 loose color photographs. 34 measure 4" x 5 7/8", the rest are 3 7/8" x 4¾". Fine. This is a collection of photos depicting two different major LGBTQ+ events in Washington, D.C. The nine smaller photos appear to be from 1987's Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights which took place on October 11th. These include shots taken on the National Mall showing groups milling about with many signs and banners as well as one photo showing members of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force preparing signs to be given to marchers. The rest of the photos are from 1993's March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay, and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation which took place on April 25th. Approximately one million people attended this event, and several photos here show marchers holding banners or wearing shirts specifically made for the 1993 March. Several show men in drag, others show crowds on the mall or marching in the street, a few show people around vendor…

New Mexico, Arizona and Oklahoma, 1959. Very good. 102 color slide transparencies measuring 1 3/8" x 7/8", in cardboard mounts measuring 2" x 2"; all extensively captioned in typescript on labels adhered to mounts. Mounts generally very good plus or better with fine transparencies. This is a captivating collection of well composed and captioned slides by an unknown photographer as he and his wife and young son traveled with a member of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Neal Jensen, visiting Native Americans in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona in the late 1950s. While we have not identified the photographer, Neal Jensen was a relocation officer at the United Pueblos Agency which was located in Albuquerque. The photographer, who was apparently Jensen's friend, managed to document the lives, activities and living conditions of at least eight different tribes in at least 14 different locations. Each mount has a later applied sticker with two to four lines of typescript recording the location, month,…

Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory: N.P., 1865. Very good. 19 7/8" x 15 ¾". Hand colored photograph with "Stonewall" written in pencil in large script on verso as well as a pasted-on sheet adhered to verso with handwritten ink inscription, "For Ollie E. Russell/Richard D. Russell/taken in Santa Fe. N. M. in 1865." Very good: lightly bowed at edges; light to moderate edge wear and dust soiling; 2" x 1.5" patch of staining, along with several smaller stains, none of which affect the subject. This is a large portrait of a Colorado frontiersman who died leading a group of homesteaders against a giant land company that attempted to evict them from the town they spent nearly 20 years building. Richard D. Russell was born in Canada in 1839, raised in Illinois, and ran away from home to California at the age of 16 where he became a rancher. He joined the First California Volunteers early in the Civil War, ultimately ending up at Fort Union in New Mexico, serving with the New Mexico Volunteers. While at Fort…

St. Louis, Missouri: [Committee of the Community Race Relations Institute], 1946. 10¾" x 8¾". Stapled wrappers. Reproduced typescript printed rectos only. [4], 154A [i.e. 155] leaves. Very good: wrappers moderately worn, scuffed and dust soiled; wrappers and a few leaves with small chips; text lightly toned. In February, 1946, leaders from thirty-four civic, welfare, religious and labor organizations met at the downtown Y.M.C.A. in St. Louis with the goal of improving that city's race relations. This is the report of those meetings. The Community Race Relations Institute ("CRRI") grew out of the Race Relations Department of the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries. According to the Amistad Research Center, the department's mission was to "define problem areas related to race relations in the United States, to develop programs and techniques designed to promote constructive action, and to work toward relieving areas of tension utilizing, wherever possible, local resources." The department,…

[Philadelphia, PA]: [Pan African Federation Organization], 1978. Very good. 11¼" x 9¼" black vinyl commercial three-ring album. Pp. [185] + 5 pages of handwritten quiz questions laid in. Very good: album chipped at two corners and lightly mottled; some scattered small stains and light edgewear; some pages printed lightly or crooked, as issued; one page loose at bottom ring and a few reinforced at an earlier date. This is a binder documenting an obscure course in African and Black American history that was produced by a little-known Philadelphia group, the Pan African Federation Organization (PAFO). The materials reveal a deeply moving effort to advance Black Americans' knowledge of African culture, replete with an attending student's copious underlining and manuscript notations. There is very little online evidence to be found on PAFO, which was incorporated in Philadelphia in 1978. Two sources reported people earning a "bachelor of historical education" from PAFO, the group gave a…
