Description:
[New York]: [Not published], 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Quarto, four volumes. Not paginated, but each volume contains well over 100 bound leaves (mostly rectos only) of documents. Bound in slightly flexible maroon cloth with typed paper labels. Bindings a touch shaken, one soiled, but the contents are mostly quite clean and well-preserved; overall very good. A rich mixture of transcribed meeting minutes of the Board of Governors, along with typed and signed correspondence between executives and various vendors and other firms whose business was required for the functioning of the club. Many of these are hand-signed, and there are a few notable signatures, such as Mackenzie King. Financial summaries (there were lots of playing cards, cigars, and cigarettes) and various proposals for disbursement of funds for arious charitable causes are discussed. The four volumes are mostly contiguous, although it's likely there is a missing volume which would cover the stretch from May 1925-May… Read More

Description:
[Boston?]: Page and Shaw, 1923. Ninth edition [first edition?]. Staplebound. Near fine. 16mo, 40pp., illustrated. A near fine pamphlet in the publisher's decorative printed stapled wraps. Spine fragile and a tinge worn, but a clean, unmarked copy. Quite scarce promotional and historical pamphlet which details the history of the Page and Shaw candy manufacturer-retailer. Founded in Boston in the 1880s, by the time this pamphlet was published four decades later, it had a multinational presence. This volume is packed with illustrations from photographs of Page and Shaw's various locations, factories, etc. OCLC does not note any separately listed holdings of this pamphlet. We tried a broader search, noting that this is the stated "ninth edition," but could not locate any similarly-titled items. This may have been a kind of stunt to lend some authority to the publication, but it's just as conceivable that the earlier editions do indeed exist and are similarly rare. In any event, a… Read More

Toledo, Ohio: Jeep Vehicles, 1962. Staplebound. Very good. Oblong quarto, unpaginated (10pp.), illustrated. In very good condition, with some creasing, and two stamps for "Chagrin Falls Motor Sales, Inc" and their address on the front wrap, else unmarked. Nicely illustrated catalogue for Jeep trucks and panel vans. Though undated, it claims that these Gladiator models are "all-new," and those were first produced in 1962, which seems about right. All of the tech specs are present, along with color illustrations of the various trims and modifications which can be obtained. Uncommon; a great gift for the Jeep fanatic in your life.

Description:
[Natural Bridge Station, VA], 1936. Oblong quarto. String-bound photo album containing 50 leaves, fewer than half of which are used. Sound and showing minimal wear. One small panorama photograph of the completed barracks at Natural Bridge Station, measuring about 10.5" x 3.5", plus 43 snapshots, mostly about 3" x 4", including borders. Photographs laid-into corner mounts, mostly in excellent codition, near fine. Most of the other leaves in the album have empty corner mounts pasted to the leaves, indicating that a number of (possibly related or unrelated) photographs were removed before the album was presented to us. A nice, rather focused group of snapshots relating to the activities of the CCC in Natural Bridge Station, VA. From the Forest Service website (www.nps.gov): "On January 16, 1936, what was now called the Natural Bridge Camp became occupied by Company 2345, previously stationed at Camp Vesuvius, F-9. Captain Milton C. Mock was still company commander, and J.N. Jefferson remained from the… Read More

Description:
Albany, NY: E. H. Pease & Co, 1850. Sewn binding. Good +. 12mo, 15pp., with the spreads alternating between printed leaves and blank leaves, as issued (so, just 8pp. of content). A good or better copy, wihth the spine seemingly re-sewn in a crosshatch pattern by a competent amateur, loosened at the base, but generally holding well. Some soiling and chipping. Illustrations on each text page have been colored in a contemporary hand, in the typical style for these mid-19th century chapbooks. This group of vignettes depict Old Mother Hubbard's dog getting into all kinds of unruly human-like antics (wearing a wig, riding a goat, playing the flute, etc.). Curiously, there are just a small handful of holdings in OCLC for this title, under the imprint R. H. Pease, also of Albany, but at a different address. Presumably R. H. and E. H. were close relatives engaged in the same business. The "E. H. Pease" imprint, at 82 State St. in Albany, is not separately listed in OCLC, and thus perhaps unrecorded.

Gentle foxing, but a clean, sound copy of this scarce chapbook published by the prolific American Tract Society. Small stain on rear wrap. Though undated, the ATC was located at the 144 Nassau St. address from 1827-1832. Checklist of American Imprints 32168. New York: Clark & Maynard, 1850. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Good. 32mo, 96pp., illustrated. A good copy in the publisher's blind-stamped red cloth. Cloth soiled and rubbed, spine ends and corners nicked. Hinges tender. Contents quite clean. Scarce diminutive volume meant to demonstrate moral tales for children. This particular volume, which recounts the life of an old sailor and his exploits, includes some tall tales of voyaging in the North Sea, encounters with Native Americans in the Arctic, and a whaling voyage; the latter is quite timely, appearing here within a year of the publication of "Moby-Dick." OCLC locates several holdings, but we found none in commerce as of this listing, and the last auction appearance in 1949. Scarce.

The prints and the album itself are in excellent condition, partifularly Fine. The images are tipped into the album leaves. Slightly more than half of the images (54) depict scenes from the World's Fair, and the rest appear to be rural scenes in northern Wisconsin. The amateur shots are generally quite well-shot and composed, parcitularly those that capture buildings and experiences at the 1933 fair.

Description:
[Lakewood, OH], 1979. Very good. Three binders of varying sizes, containing well over 200 leaves of documents, about thirty photographs, and dozens of mimeographed or xeroxed programs, all relating to the Lakewood P. T. A. Mothersingers. The contents are mostly in very good condition; most photographs are taped or glued to the scrapbook leaves, as are a number of documents, while others are laid-in. The scrapbooks appear to have been kept in an attic, leading to some insect damage, and the bindings are stressed (particularly on the largest album). but, for the most part, the archive itself is clean and presentable. The Mothersingers were a volunteer choral group, mostly consisting of women in the Lakewood area (it's an inner-ring west side suburb of Cleveland) who had children in Lakewood schools, though that was not a strict requirement. Of particular interest are the yearly "Historian's Report," which gave a 1-2 page single-spaced summary of the singers' activities during the previous school year.… Read More

[no place - Dallas?]: [self-published], 1937. First Edition (?). Softcover. Very good-. Octavo, 80pp. About very good in the publisher's printed wraps. Backstrip mostly perished, and some chips and a few strak marks to wraps, else clean and sound internally. Per the Foreword: "These messages were delivered over Radio Station KFJZ. The many requests which have been made for the distribution of these messages have led to the publication of this book." Our limited research suggests that this may have been a radio station in Dallas, TX. We could find no hard details about Boone, and we note that we found no copies of this lengthy pamphlet in OCLC as of this listing. A scarce manifesto from a (presumably southern) preacher.

Description:
St. Petersburg, Russia: A. Ouyne [?], 1885. Very good. One carte de visite, measuring about 2 1/2" x 4 1/8" (65mm x 105mm). A ca. 1885 carte de visite depicting a Russian circus or sideshow performer, who was missing an eye. In this image, the subject is using some sort of ball-shaped toy attached to a string, which he has placed in his eye socket. The image, slighly overexposed, is in very good condition with perhaps three mild foxing marks. The mound is evenly age-toned, but generally clean. The reverse prints the photographer's name and business information in Russian (we have not attempted to transliterate or translate the image, though our rudimentary skills can at least make out "St. Petersburg" and the slighty more specific neighborhood of "Krasnoye Selo." Certainly a scarce sideshow CDV.

Description:
New York: Charles Magnus, 1863. Self-wrappers. Good +. Octavo, [4pp.]. Single sheet, folded to about 5.25" x 8", printed on the first leaf only. In good or better condition, with old flattened folds, with some stress tears to same. Mild finger-soiling/staining. The hand-colored engraved image is in very good or better condition. Printed song sheet bearing a pro-McClellan tune. Though undated, the subject of the song seems to be regarding McClellan's position in the military (being recently demoted from command of the Army of the Potomac due to Lincoln's dissatisfaction with him), rather than his 1864 presidential campaign. The third leaf contains a full-page neat holograph letter from one Joseph Bowman, who identifies himself as a member of the 61st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Division, 6th Army Corps. The letter, addressed to a Mr. Miller from Brandy Station, VA on April 11, 1864, mostly thanks Miller for his earlier letter, and tells him that the box Miller had sent never arrived, due to… Read More

Description:
Chicago: Jefferson, 1886. First Edition (?). Softcover. Very good-. Octavo, [iv], 71, [9]. Illustrated with two folding plates. About very good in the publisher's printed wraps. Front wrap with a long tear at the spine joint, and a few clear tape repairs. The large panorama plate has a short tear and a few unnecessary clear tape reinforcements to the verso, but is clean. The other folding plate appears unopened. Contents clean apart from a few stray pencil markings. An innovative and stylized portrayal of a battle scene, in the spirit of the popular cycloramas of the time (such as those which depict the battles of Gettysburg and Atlanta). This pamphlet seems to have been issued by two publishers; one in Chicago and the other in Cleveland; we are unsure of any priority. Broadfoot noted only a 1914 reprint, which he did not describe as a reprint. Scarce.

Staunton, VA: J. E. B. Stuart Chapter No 10, U. D. C., 1904. Staplebound. Fine. 12mo, 12pp. A fine copy in the publsiher's stapled printed wraps, gently sunned along the spine. Contents fresh and sound. A scarce and most interesting little volume, which asks and answers a number of questions about the Civil War. The questions are largely the kind that a child or young adult might ask, although they are all deeply rooted in Lost Cause language, as are, of course, the answers. An example: "What great leader in the Northern army owned slaves? Answer: Gen. U. S. Grant, who continued to live on their hire and service until the close of the war and after the emancipation proclamation had been published, while he was leading armies to free the slaves of the South." This feeble attempt at impugning Grant's integrity is amusing, as it reveals much more than it wants to; most confederate sympathizers of the early 20th century would never admit that the Union army was attempting to "free the slaves of the… Read More

[no place, likely Charleston]: South Carolina Monument Association, 1874. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Very good. Large octavo, 11pp. Date and presumed place of publication from OCLC. A very good copy in the publisher's reddish-brown cloth over thin boards, titled in gilt on the front board. Some soiling to the cloth and interior margins, but a clean, sound example. Rare volume of poetry written from a pro-Confederate perspective, and lamenting the effects of Reconstruction on South Carolina's former power structure. From the second stanza: "Germ of an Empire! venished ere the stain/Of life had dimmed its glory! thou art still/Shrined in the hearts of millions. 'Tis in vain/Men struggle to disown thee, and to chill/Their nobler instincts." The Association was not founded until 1869, which would seem to approximate the earliest possible publication date. [Rochester, Michigan]: [Meadow Brook School], 1968. Very good. Four posters, printed on "Embosograf"-branded cardboard, with embossed letter. Overall very good, with a few letters missing or partly detached, and some pencil writing on one of the posters. The Meadow Brook Orchestra was, for a time, the summer residence of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and a young James Levine spent his summers there as the guest conductor from about 1965 to 1972. Levine, who has been recently disgraced by numerous disturbing allegations of sexual assault, was (we uncomfortably admit) nonetheless a pivotal figure in modern classical music, and these highly ephemeral items have survived as evidence of his active career at the young age of 25. We were unable to locate copies of these posters in worldwide library holdings, including the Oakland University Archives, which house the Meadow Brook Music Festival collection.
