Description:
Although the author is unknown, he was an officer of the squadron commanded by Comte d'Estaing which was sent by France in 1778 to aid the American patriots. He gives a detailed account of the encounter with the British fleet under Lord Howe near Newport. He also gives a valuable firsthand report of the violent storm that separated the two fleets, making it necessary for d'Estaing to retire to Boston for repairs instead of remaining to support the American land forces. This compelled General Sullivan to evacuate Rhode Island and leave Newport to the British.Charles-Hector, Comte d'Estaing was a vice-admiral in the French navy and the senior naval officer in American waters during the Revolutionary War. He transported the first contingent of French land forces to Rhode Island in 1778 and participated in 1779 in the siege of Savannah. He supported the Revolution in France after 1789 and died on the gallows during the Reign of Terror.12mo. Disbound. A Bruxelles, 1782. Written in response to: Extrait du…

SOURCE OF THE TITLE PRIDE AND PREJUDICEBURNEY, FRANCES. Cecilia, or Memoirs of an Heiress. By the Author of Evelina. 12mo. Bound in full speckled calf with gilt-lettered spine labels; page edges dyed yellow. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son. 1782. First Edition. 5 volumes. With the misspelled catchword on page 235 of vol. II and the mispaginated page 159 in vol. V. The first edition of Fanny Burney's second novel, recounting the trials and tribulations of a wealthy young orphan who, launched into society, must guard her fortune and virtue from the depredations of assorted suitors. A follow-up to her hugely successful Evelina, Cecilia is "less unstudied" than the earlier work, "with greater polish, and a 'literary quality' that gave rise to the report that Dr. Johnson had corrected it." (Kunitz & Haycraft)An interesting incidental note is the appearance near the end of the book of a phrase that would gain immortality in the hands of a slightly later author:"'The whole of this unfortunate business,'…

Original ÂĽ-paper-backed gray boards. Printed by William Molineux . Published by William Cobbett. N.D. (1817) First Edition. An English pamphleteer, farmer and journalist, William Cobbett gained a reputation as a rabble rouser, famed for his political publications aimed at working class readers. He believed that reforming Parliament and abolishing the rotten boroughs would help to end the poverty of farm laborers, and he attacked the borough-mongers, sinecurists and "tax-eaters" relentlessly. He was found guilty of treasonous libel on 15 June 1810 after objecting in his Weekly Political Register to the flogging at Ely of local…

Hardcover. Fine. 4to. Bound in 20th-century 1/4-vellum over marbled boards. Strasbourg: Matthias SchĂĽrer, July 1510. Second Strasbourg edition of Erasmus heavily annotated collection of Greek and Latin proverbs. Printed in Roman and Greek types. This is the original version, containing 818 adages, which is considerably shorter than the later expanded versions published under the title Adagiorum chiliades. (Adams E-420; Bezzel, Erasmusdrucke, 50; Van der Haeghen, Bibliotheca Erasmiana, p.25-6; Bibl. Belgica II, 276: no. E.61; Muller, Strasbourg II, p. 179, no. 45.) The Adagia could only have been possible in the new world of European education, in which careful attention to a broader range of classical texts produced a much fuller picture of the literature of antiquity. Its impact has been long lasting. Such popular expressions such as one step at a time, between a rock and a hard place, break the ice, an iron in the fire, looking a gift horse in the mouth, and many other sayings can trace their…

4to. Modern half-calf over marbled boards, red leather label on spine. London: Printed for W. Nicoll and C. Etherington, 1767. First Edition. With a list of subscribers and a fold-out chart measuring rainfall in England for 1755-66. A fascinating set of contemporary statistics and observations on population patterns, cultural movements, food supply and meteorology in England for three hundred years – well within the life of Shakespeare. Therefore, it gives some implications for society in the time of Shakespeare. It is thought that Malthus may have used some of Short's methodologies; also it is known that Benjamin Franklin read the book.
