McGraw-Hill, 2002 4to (25.5 cm), XXXII, 1271 pp. Laminated boards (minor shelf-wear). "The wide-ranging debate brought about by the calculus reform movement has had a significant impact on calculus textbooks. In response to many of the questions and concerns surrounding this debate, the authors have written a modern calculus textbook, intended for students majoring in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering and related fields. The authors follow a relatively standard order of presentation, while integrating technology and thought-provoking exercises throughout the text. This text places a significant emphasis on problem solving and presents realistic applications, as well as open-ended problems." (from the blurb)

Description:
Cambridge University Press, 1995 4to (25.5 cm), XXX, 882 pp. Laminated wrappers. From the blurb: "This is the most authoritative and comprehensive one-volume dictionary of philosophy available in English. It contains over 4,000 entries, which range in length from 100 to 4,000 words. The Dictionary has been written by an international team of over 350 experts, so, rather than offering the limited perspective of a single writer, it distils the collective knowledge of the professional community of philosophers in an accessible manner. The Cambridge Dictionary clearly and concisely defines both technical terms and crucial concepts, and will promote the understanding of philosophy on all levels and across all fields. It includes substantial explanatory articles on all major philosophers as well as hundreds of minor figures. There are expansive, up-to-date overviews of all the important sub-disciplines such as ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind and logic. No other reference work on… Read More

Cambridge University Press, 1984 8vo (23.5 cm), xvii, 343 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. From the blurb: "In 1984 the Press celebrates four hundred years of continuous printing and publishing, and this history gives a readable and not-too-formal introduction to that unique record. It is the story of the development of the printing and publishing arm of the University of Cambridge, from the medieval system of resident stationers who dealt in manuscripts to the present large printing and publishing house which produces computer software and audio cassette tapes as well as books (mostly now computer-set). The narrative is given its proper setting in the development of the University, which has inevitably determined the history of the Press itself; in the history of the book trade as a whole; and in the intellectual and political history of England which has at times affected the fortunes of the Press."

Description:
Little, Brown, 1998 8vo (22.5 cm), XXIII, 182 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (paper slightly toned). "By 1949, the idea of duplicating human thought processes in a computer was starting to surface, as the outgrowth of code-breaking work done by Alan Turing and others in Britain during the Second World War. This ingenious work of speculative scientific fiction reconstructs what might have been said during the animated conversation flowing around Snow's rooms that fateful in Cambridge. The quintet's debate anticipates all of the basic questions which have surrounded artificial intelligence in the fifty years since. Can a machine think or merely process information? Is the brain simply a symbol-processing machine, as Turing suggests, and if so, what is the nature of meaning? Can there be, as Wittgenstein proposes, no thought without language, and no language without the social interaction of human beings?" (from the blurb)

Cambridge University Press, 1954 4to (31.5 cm), front., XV, 140 pp, 72 illustrations on 72 plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj slightly frayed at extremities). From the blurb: "Medieval Canterbury, the centre of the English Church, was also the centre of England's greatest and most sustained achievement in art: the illumination of MSS. between AD 1000 and 1200. This book is the authoritative work on the subject. The narrative begins with the inception of the Anglo-Saxon impressionistic style; it traces the gradual development of Romanesque and Gothic and shows the important effects of Norman, French, Italian and Byzantine influences. Dr. Dodwell analyses the character and origin of Norman illumination, the problems of iconography and survivals of classical art. One of the bases of the study is a thorough knowledge of Canterbury scripts, which is most necessary for dating illumination. There are scholarly appendixes on illumination at Durham, Exeter and Winchester and a handlist… Read More

Paris: Adam Pilinski et fils, 1883 4to (32 cm), [4], 3 pp, 16 ff of facsimiles. Publisher’s cloth, gilt-lettered front board (binding and front endpaper slightly stained). A facsimile reprint of a book-block preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Canticum canticorum blockbook illustrates the Christian allegory of divine love derived from the Old Testament book of the Song of Solomon or Song of Songs. Limited to 100 copies, with only a few printed on special paper designed to replicate the original, this particular copy is one of those printed on special paper. Adam Piliński (1810-1887) was a Polish engraver who, in 1832, relocated to Paris and gained fame for his techniques in reproducing illuminated manuscripts and early printed books. Noteworthy patrons of his work included the Duke of Aumale, Ambroise Firmin Didot, and Joseph Techener. The introduction to the facsimile was penned by another Polish émigré, Gustaw Pawlowski (1842-1913), who, at the… Read More

Description:
Harvard University Press, 2007 8vo (24 cm), XI, 304 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. From the blurb: "The rise of global financial markets in the last decades of the twentieth century was premised on one fundamental idea: that capital ought to flow across country borders with minimal restriction and regulation. Freedom for capital movements became the new orthodoxy. In an intellectual, legal, and political history of financial globalization, Rawi Abdelal shows that this was not always the case. Transactions routinely executed by bankers, managers, and investors during the 1990s - trading foreign stocks and bonds, borrowing in foreign currencies - had been illegal in many countries only decades, and sometimes just a year or two, earlier. How and why did the world shift from an orthodoxy of free capital movements in 1914 to an orthodoxy of capital controls in 1944 and then back again by 1994? How have such standards of appropriate behavior been codified and transmitted internationally?… Read More

Description:
Morgan & Claypool Publishers, 2016 8vo (25 cm), X, 104 pp. Laminated wrappers. Synopsis: This is an overview of different models and mechanisms developed to describe the capture and relaxation of carriers in quantum-dot systems. Despite their undisputed importance, the mechanisms leading to population and energy exchanges between a quantum dot and its environment are not yet fully understood. The authors develop a first-order approach to such effects, using elementary quantum mechanics and an introduction to the physics of semiconductors. The book results from a series of lectures given by the authors at the Master's level.

John Wiley & Sons, 2000 8vo (22.7 cm), XX, 540 pp. Laminated wrappers. "Carl Sagan was one of the most celebrated scientists of his time - the leading visionary of the Space Age. He was also a highly controversial figure who inspired wildly opposed opinions. His enthusiasm and eloquence about the wonders of space, the marvels of the human brain, and the mysteries of life captured the imagination of millions. Yet one scientist was so enraged by Sagan's scientific pronouncements that he compared him to the Black Plague, and William F. Buckley, Jr. likened him to circus huckster P. T. Barnum."
