China Pictorial is a monthly magazine (bi-weekly thru 1960), illustrated with photographs and essays about current events highlighting the development and progress in modern PRC, the People's Republic of China. It doubled as a propaganda tool of the Chinese government and was issued in 19 languages, including Korean, Russian, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. Several issues include various supplements, calendars and flyers laid inside. Except for the one duplicate issue covering the funeral of Chairman Mao (1976.11) which is in Chinese, all remaining 218 issues are the English-Language version. Quite rare thus.

Original Chinese text. On page 13 there is reproduced a photograph of Chairman Hua Guofeng (or Kuo-feng) with a separate printed picture of that same image, the Chairman reading Mao's eulogy at his funeral ceremony. The Y.W.C.A. was founded in 1923, this book contains reports written by foreign secretaries sent from different countries to work with Chinese women in different cities in China while they are training for leadership during the first year of Y.W.C.A., important and valuable experience was recorded. 12mo, [i] 78 pp., rice paper, traditional sewn thread binding, slight tears to the left edge of cover, light spotting to the front cover, else fine condition.

17 stories with pictures are included in this book to demonstrate the U.S.'s aggression to China from 1840 to 1957, each story starts with a quotation from Chairman Mao. On page 72 there is a photo of draft found at a U.S. spy's home for attacking Tiananmen Square. Condition is very good.

4to., Title-page + [129] typewritten pages; card covers with the 'ABC Pictures Corp' logo.
Provenance: Roland Shaw, the music arranger/orchestrator on the film set, and believes it to have been used by Liza Minelli during filming.
The 1972 film starring Liza Minelli as Sally Bowles won eight Academy Awards.

CHINA: Propaganda against Western Missionaries
The Cause of the Riots in the Yangtse Valley. A "Complete Picture Gallery" by CHOU HAN. Hankow [China] 1891. With 32 full=page woodblock plates printed in color. Oblong 4to, original printed wrappers, sewn spine (soiling, minor repairs).
The author Chou Han is described by the translator Griffith John (1831-1912) as 'a gentleman of high official rank (Taotai) in Hunan', and was part of an orchestrated propaganda campaign aimed at discouraging Western Christian missionaries from working and traveling in China. This volume was perhaps his most significant and horrific attack on western culture, managing a "reptile press" in Hunan creating unrest and distrust amongst the Chinese people (see John's "A Voice from China" 1907, p. 220). Chou Han himself is probably represented in plates IX, XIII, XXVI and XXIX; the images are virulently anti-foreigner, and specifically anti-Christian. First edition of this influential and extensive study of the communitarian ideal in the United States. Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901) emigrated to the United States as a child, and went on to have a varied career as sailor, journalist and writer. His grandson Charles Bernard Nordhoff is the famous historian of the Bounty. In The Communistic Societies of the United States, Nordhoff recounts his travels to many of the socialistic societies which became popular in the nineteenth century, most famously the Shakers of Mount Lebanon, the Rappite township at 'Harmony' and the Oneida Community. As Nordhoff points out in his Introduction, he hoped that a study of these communities might provide 'useful hints toward the solution of the labor question'.
