Ergon Erwin Kisch (1885-1948) was a colorful reporter who is known as the founder of „investigative journalism,“ but historians view his work as art literature than an objective description of real events. Based in Berlin, he wrote in German for Prague newspapers and was given diplomatic status which protected him as a Jew and communist. Always appreciated for his humor, his journalistic legacy is now treated as more „creative“ than factual. Photomontage cover by Václav Masek. Octavo 22.3x16 cm., original illustrated wrappers with a lithograph by Olga Rozanova. 22 leaves. This polemical work by Kruchenykh sneers at the preoccupations of Russian writers such as Dostoyevsky and Lermontov with the theme of the devil and demons and how Russian literature has been saved by Futurism. Kruchenykh, perhaps unsurprisingly, cites his own works ('Half Alive' and 'A Game in Hell') as examples of the correct approach to any treatment of the devil and demons in literature. The cover lithograph by Rozanova is a particularly gruesome image of a demon with sharp teeth biting off the head of an infant. A very nice, crisp copy with a striking lithograph by Rozanova. Tartu: Odamehe Kirjastus, 1921 Octavo, wrappers, 94pp. Poems by August Alle (1890-1952), one of the participants in the Siuru movement which gave rise to Estonian modernism. Cover by Ado Vabbe and gravure frontispiece by expressionist R.J. Paris. No library copies held in North America.

Riga: Vainags, 1920 Octavo, wrappers, 48pp. Cover design by Jekabs Kazaks. Pavils Rozitis (variant spelling) lived from 1889 to 1937. A novelist and poet, his prose work tended towards satire, especially directed at bourgeois life and culture, and he was widely published. He was known for his translations from Russian, and was aligned with pro-Russian leftist groups. The present work (Road to Paradise)is a novelette. The cover artist was Jekabs Kazaks (1895-1920), one of the most promising of the Riga Artists Group and his early death was a loss to the avant-garde. Rare: no library holdings found in North America.

Prague: Borovy, 1921 Quarto, wrappers, 618pp. The third year of this legendary journal. Subtitled „Socialný týdenik” it was modified from issue 33 to read „Kommunistický týdeník” with the editor’s increasing allegiance to Moscow during the year 1921. This year saw a very doctrinaire presentation of leftist rhetoric, with less space given to the arts and culture which characterized the first and last year. Rare.

Brno: the author, with Karel Kryl, 1931 Octavo portfolio, boards, 332pp.,loose as issued. #145 in an edition of 250. Original etching by Jan Konupek. Includes several pages of watermarks found in bibliofile editions. Sanka's list of bibliophile books and publications of original grapics is an unparalleled resource for collectors and libraries. This volume covers publications from 1923 to 1926. Would that we had such references in other countries for their productions, and so nicely done. Uncut signatures; condition fine.

Brno: the author, 1923 8vo, wrappers, 190pp. #113 printed on Ullersdorf paper in a general edition of 500. Two striking full-page woodcuts and a tail-piece by Josef Vachal. Sanka's list of bibliophile books and publications of original graphics is an unparalleled resource for the collector and libraries. In depth and detail there is no equivalent in other languages. In this first volume, publications dating back to the late 19th century up to 1922 are given detailed description. An essential reference for Czech literature and art production. Fine.

Brno: The author, 1923, 1927, 1931; Prague: Statni Knihovna, 1967, 1971, 1923 8vo,boards, cloth, 187, 233, 328, 683, 538pp. (all published). Vol. 4 and 5 were edited and completed by Frantisek Bubla after Sanka's notes. The complete annotated list of fine Czech literature dating from 1890 through 1970. Volumes I through III are limited editions, with graphics by Vachal and Konupek; vol. I signed, II is hors commerce. All in very good condition; Vol II has tear on DJ. An invaluable resource for the Czech bibliophile collector and of great archival value. Very scarce.

Prague: Druzstveni Práce, 1938 Large quarto, wrappers, 216pp. in 7 fasicules (all published) released over a two-year period. Václav Vilém Stech (1885-1974) was a highly respected Czech art historian who specialized in Renaissance and Baroque art, receiving numerous honors and prestige for his work in these fields. This work appeared as a series of historical examinations of Czech and Moravian art from the Baroque forward. This was a book in the making, which was intended to form a much larger work. It apparently ceased publication with the 7th fascicule dealing with the the early 18th century, leaving words in mid-sentence, because the bibliographic record stands at that precise page count. Uncommon, recorded in only one North American library. Very good condition.

Prague: Družstevní Práce, 1934 Octavo, decorated cloth, 340(ii)pp. Book cover, book design and frontispiece by Mikulas Galanda. Kral' (1903-1955) was an American born Slovak writer whose family returned to Slovakia early on and lived in dire straits and ill health. Early contact with the Czech avant-garde writers Nezval, Neumann, Wolker et al and leftist orientation informed his writing with plight of underprivileged and suffering of war and capitalist exploitation. His work from the interwar years is acknowledged as his best. This novel published in Prague, in Slovak language and with Slovak-Czech dictionary for Czech readers. Mikulas Galanda was a noted Slovak graphic artist. Published in conjunction with Slovenia Grafia in Bratislava. This first edition not located in North American libraries.

Quarto 22.5x19.5 cm., wrappers, (10) pp. A fine book introducing the young reader to tea production, making, and distribution. Author and book artist David Shterenberg (1881-1948) was a Ukrainian Jew born in Zhitomir. He held high positions in the earlier decades of the Soviet era (Commissar of Artistic Matters, etc.), worked closely with Lunacharsky, headed the Jewish Society for the Furthering of the Arts, and enjoyed a successful career as a graphic artist until he ran afoul with the state directives after 1930 and fell into obscurity. OCLC locates two North American institutional holdings Univ Chi, Princeton). Near fine.

Quarto 27.5x21.7 cm., wrappers, (14) pp. Children s poems by Nikolai Agnivtsev (1888- 1932), known for his children's books in addition to his own poetry. He also established a hand puppet theater in St. Petersburg. The Cup of Tea is a well know children s book, although only two holdings found in North American institutions (Princeton, Texas A&M). Soviet book artist Vladislav Tvardovskii (1888-1942) was also a film animator and director. He died in the siege of Leningrad. A stunning work. This copy fine.

Octavo 16 cm., 13 pp. Illustrations by A. Laptev. Aleksei Laptev (1905-1965) was ab Acadent Member of the USSR and Honored Artist of the USSR, chiefly known for his work as a children's book illustrator. Vladimir Mayakovsky and other Soviet poets found that children's literature provided an outlet that was, up to the mid 1930s, free of censorship.

Paris: ARS, 1930 Quarto, wrappers, 20pp., 18 plates. 210 copies, this unnumbered. Kliment Nikolaevich Redko (1897-1956) studied under Aleksandra Ekster and worked in a suprematist mode and fully engaged in the avant-garde, which included working in the early revolutionary era and decorating streets with agit-prop elements. Later he spent 7 years in Paris evolving from a modernist to quasi impressionist before returning to the USSR, where he merged into soviet realism. OCLC finds this in 7 North American libraries.
