Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1986. First edition. Fine in fine jacket.. Signed first printing of the third Kinsey Millhone mystery, in which the hard-boiled private detective continues an investigation on behalf of a murdered client. Beyond that [she] showed me how a female series heroine could work." A terrific copy, with no flaws to speak of. 8'' x 5.25''. Original grey paper boards, silver-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($14.95) pictorial dust jacket designed by Abby Kagan. [10], 243, [1] pages. Signed by Grafton in black felt pen on title page.

Description:
[Philadelphia]: [American Philosophical Society], 1793. Very good.. Presentation copy extract from the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society Vol. III, featuring the first US publication on the education of deaf people. A prize dissertation proposing spelling reform into 30 letters to represent English, the enduring legacy of this article is in the related essay at the rear on teaching deaf people to speak. This essay suggests different strategies depending on the age of the learner: just as in acquiring foreign languages, children have more practical facility than adults. But for older students, learning in conjunction with reading is important - though greatly complicated by the lack of standardized spelling (a problem that inspired the main portion of this pamphlet, and also tackled by Webster in this era). The essay also briefly mentions sign language. A friend of Thornton's, Thomas Gallaudet, would later found early educational programs for deaf students. A landmark in American…

Description:
Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1951. Near fine in very good dust jacket.. First edition, in first state jacket, of Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of conflict and mistrust aboard a destroyer, adapted into an Oscar-nominated film starring Humphrey Bogart. Herman Wouk drew on his own experiences aboard destroyers in the Pacific theater to craft his narrative of internal and external conflicts. Rather than being an action-packed reflection on the adventure of war, THE CAINE MUTINY focuses on the minutia and procedures that keep the war machine turning, and the tough decisions that must be made when things break down With Humphrey Bogart in the indelible role of the unstable Lieutenant Commander Queeg, the 1954 Hollywood adaptation of the novel was the second-highest grossing film of the year. An enormous bestseller at the time, the true first edition is uncommon. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original blue cloth binding with silver lettering to spine. Original unclipped ($3.95) color pictorial…

Description:
Madrid: Renacimiento, 1926. First edition. Very good.. Rare signed true first edition of this novel of Mexican immigration to the United States from one of Bolivia's most celebrated writers. A social novel with romance overtones set in the Santa Clara Valley during the mission period of California's early statehood, the story of CALIFORNIA LA BELLA revolves around a love triangle between Resurrección, the beautiful daughter of an Italian immigrant of questionable background, and her two suitors: the kind but naive Pablo Guilarte, recently arrived from Mexico, and the more sinister Ralph Quinones, whose plans to kidnap Resurrección are foiled only when he is arrested for running an illegal business. Alarcón, who was teaching and living in California when he began the novel (but finished and sold it during a trip to Spain, hence the imprint), weaves alternating plot lines with commentary on the dangers of opium, sympathetic accounts of Ralph's difficult life, and descriptions of California's…

Description:
New York and London: The Macmillan Company, 1903. Near fine in like dust jacket.. First edition, first issue of one of the best-loved works of American literature, in scarce original dust jacket. Jack London's animal fiction has captured the hearts and imaginations of generations of Americans. A socialist, animal activist, and eugenicist, London was a complex man who participated in unemployment protests and the Alaskan Gold Rush. The working dogs of Alaska clearly left an impression on him, leading to several pieces of canine literature, the most famous of which is CALL OF THE WILD. Published in 1903, CALL OF THE WILD hit the shelves in the second year of Teddy Roosevelt's presidency; Americans were hungry for the outdoors and red-blooded adventure stories. With its narrative of civilization pitted against instinct, the title was enthusiastically received by critics, and was an immediate hit. Brooklyn Daily Eagle reviewers note that London "does not make the mistake of endowing his [dog] hero…

Description:
New York: Donahue, 1916. Very good plus.. A short story of the Campfire Girls, a popular fiction series from the early 20th century based upon a girls' club very similar to the Girl Scouts. Officially incorporated as a national organization in 1912, the Camp Fire Girls was a youth development program meant to teach girls the skills of outdoors self-sufficiency. It was a nonsectarian group that still exists today as a gender inclusive organization. In its early years, the org took a problematic approach to camping, dressing white girls in approximations of traditional clothing of Indigenous nations, including "playing" various tribes. The Art Nouveau-influenced images of this publication capture the cheerful appropriation of those years of the program. A nice copy, much scarcer than the books in the series. Folio. Original color pictorial wrappers. Illustrated with 6 full-page color images and brown illustrations in line. [16] pages (including wrappers).

Description:
London: Constable and Company Ltd, 1927. Later edition. Very good plus.. Beautifully bound 1920s edition of Shaw's play that pits an idealist poet against a practical cleric for a woman's affections - in attractive Art Deco fine binding. The second of Shaw's "Plays Pleasant" trilogy, CANDIDA was first published in 1898. The play did not prove to be particularly popular in London, but found more fertile ground in New York in 1904, with Shaw himself remarking on the "Candidamania" that swept the city. The play saw a revival in 1924, which again captivated audiences, and was still running when this edition of the play was published. The unsigned binding of this copy exhibits a strong and prescient design sensibility: the motif embodies the Art Deco style of the late '20s, but would also not look out of place on a 21st century fine binding. A lovely copy. 7'' x 4.5''. Contemporary full brick red goatskin with linear gilt tooling, five raised bands. Top edge gilt, others uncut. 78, [4] pages, paginated…
