Printed card, 275 mm in diameter, wooden handle 290 mm in length, mounted in the centre to rotate; one side calculates rates of interest for wages, calculated at 6% from one day to 360 days; the other side calculates interest at the rate of 5% from one day to five years; considering its fragility, a remarkably well preserved example. An extremely rare and early form of calculating device, with the printed date of 1840. This is one of a number of mathematical and surveying instruments patented by Michaut-Delacroix (de la Croix), a surveyor from the regional town of Châtillon-sur-Seine, northwest of Dijon. Octavo, disbound (stapled by the printer, and later stitched by the author), a misprinted proof copy with several missing pages (33 ; 36-37 ; 40-41) supplied by the author in manuscript (in ink on ruled blue paper), with the author's annotations and corrections throughout and one contemporary newspaper clipping from The Herald pinned at page 38 (a letter to the editor by Benson (?) written under the pseudonym Currency Lad, relating to the content of page 38); scattered foxing. A unique copy of this personal memoir of the historic district of Camden, southwest of Sydney, in the mid-nineteenth century. Thirty-two copperplate engraved maps, each measuring 95 x 95 mm (image) and 115 x 115 mm (sheet), numbering in the upper right corner of each map; laid on linen, overall measurements 470 x 940 mm; inscribed verso Presented by the Marquis St. Simon to A. Gordon, with the initials M. G. (another Gordon family member?) below, and with another inscription crossed out; housed in a red morocco presentation case with gilt-tooled decoration and title ATLAS, 125 x 125 mm, lined with blue paper and silk. A rare configuration - possibly unique - of Desnos' Almanach géographique ou petit atlas élémentaire, dissected and laid on linen, in a fully contemporary presentation case. An inscription records that the cased atlas was presented - presumably to its second owner - by Claude Anne de Rouvroy, Marquis de Saint-Simon-Montbléru (1743-1819), a highly significant figure in the American Revolutionary War. [England] : s.n., [circa 1849]. Small octavo, publisher's pictorial card covers (heavily rubbed, edges worn), inscribed to Lucy Ann Pease from her Kind Aunt, H. Ford, Chapel Allerton [West Yorkshire] 10th mo. 18, 1849 on the pastedown, containing a folding panorama (single accordion sheet) with 12 hand-coloured plates featuring various peoples in traditional dress, the paper with mild toning but overall a highly colourful panorama in sound condition. The captions for the subjects include Albanian, Spaniard, Turk, Esquimaux, Georgian, Caffir, Mameluke, Cossack, Japanese, Red Indian, Persian and Malay. Note that the 'Japanese' caption is erroneous and was probably supposed to read 'Javanese'. Rare. We could locate only two copies of this panorama in collections worldwide (Princeton University Library; Indiana University Library). The Indiana University Library entry notes 'No bibliographical citations found'. Both libraries date their copes to between 1850 and 1870.

[France, c 1890]. Oblong box of very thick board (345 x 258 x 45 mm), the lid with a superb, colourful paste-down illustration depicting children and families at the zoo, with camel and elephant rides and an ostrich-drawn carriage. The box contains four chromolithographic scenes pasted onto wood and cut into jigsaw puzzles; each puzzle is complete (sixteen large pieces). The scenes are: an outdoor Punch and Judy show (probably in the Tuileries gardens); a picnic for children in the countryside; a village festival with children playing musical instruments in a procession; a fair with merry-go-round and other attractions. A true marvel both for its perfect condition and exquisite design.

Box of thick card (380 x 278 x 55 mm), the lid with a striking chromolithograph illustration showing a lady in Classical dress perusing an atlas, scientific and teaching instruments at her feet, a terrestrial globe at the centre, five vignettes of figures representing the five continents, the box complete and containing three maps in colour (each 350 x 250 mm) printed by Charles Verneau, laid down on wood and cut into jigsaw-puzzles: Mappemonde en deux hémisphères (with illustrations of the planets, seasons and phases of the moon); Asie; France. A remarkably well preserved set of map puzzles with beautiful Belle Époque design.

Wooden box with hinged lid, 400 x 350 x 60 mm, original decorative paper covering with chromolithographed onlay to lid, with the title 'Histoire naturelle' lettered in gold on red; the box contains 72 wooden puzzle cubes with chromolithographed paper surfaces, from which the child can potentially create a total of 36 different composite pictures of animals and peoples of the world; the names of the subjects are printed in French in the images on the cube faces; the cubes are accompanied by the game manufacturer's 36 sheets (each 195 x 150 mm) with chromolithographs of each completed scene, which essentially provide the child with a key to all of the pictures they can put together. An Australian Aborigine is one of the people-types depicted (along with Native American, European, Arab, Chinese, Eskimo, Malay, and African types); among the many exotic animals are depictions of kangaroos, the platypus, the cassowary, the kiwi and the cockatoo. [Chicago] : Svenska Missions-Förbundet till förman för dess mission in Kina [printed by W. Williamson], [1895]. Octavo, publisher's blocked blue cloth boards lettered in gilt, front pastedown with original owner's label 'John F. Dahlgren, Slaughter, N. Dak.', 184 pp, illustrated; text in Swedish; a fine copy. The Covenant Church was founded by Swedish immigrants in Chicago in 1885, and was initially known as the Swedish Evangelical Mission Covenant of America. The Church's first overseas mission was to China, where, from 1890, it worked alongside the Swedish Missionary Society and other Swedish Lutheran groups. The author of the present work, Peter Matson, together with his wife Christine Swensson Matson, led the first mission, and this work is a survey of its activities in the Hubei region, deep in central China.

London : Printed by William Clowes & Sons, [1880]. Tall octavo (245 mm), original printed blue wrappers (lightly marked, small paper loss at spine ends), pp 1-8 (advertisements), 145-208; folding colour plate at the rear with two Maps to Accompany Papers on Journeys in Eastern China by G. J. Morrison, M. I. C. E., 1878, which complement the article Journeys in the Interior of China by G. James Morrison (145-166); also contains Emil Holub's Journey through Central South Africa, from the Diamond Fields to the Upper Zambezi (166-182); small pale waterstain at bottom edges of the leaves, but contents are very clean, including the all-important map which is in fine condition.

Melbourne : Government printer, [1883]. Lithograph printing, 210 x 220 mm, printed on both sides with parallel text in English and Chinese characters; manuscript entries record the issue of the License to William Hyde of Sandhurst on 28 August 1883; the License (no. 122155) authorizes Hyde to maintain a garden and residence on Crown Lands at Sandhurst for the period of one year, for the sum of 5 shillings; the document bears the signatures of the Treasury-authorized issuer and the Licensing Agent; original folds, some very minor staining, else clean and complete. William Hyde (1835-1910) had been a gold miner on the Bendigo diggings in the early 1850s, where he had squatted in the area known as the First White Hill. He was to remain in the vicinity for the rest of his life, but from the late 1850s his interest turned to gardening. Tait' in the image at lower right, captioned across lower margin 'Sketches at the Diamond Jubilee Charity Carnival'; verso with advertisement for The Polytechnic, 82 King Street, Sydney, with title in English and text body in Chinese characters; light crease upper left and light horizontal fold, but a fine example. 'The first known Chinese backed newspaper was the Chinese Australian Herald (1894-1923) which was established in Sydney in 1894. In Chinese it was called Guang Yi Hua Bao or ""Paper for extending benefits to the public"". It was jointly funded by two Europeans, G. A. Down and J. A. Philp, and a Chinese immigrant Sun Johnson. Caulfield East, Vic. : Published by Cripac Press Pty. Ltd., vol. 1, no. 1, February 7, 1972 - vol. 1, no. 12, July 31, 1972 (but missing vol. 1, no. 9). Eleven issues, quarto, pictorial wrappers, staple bound, illustrated, all in fine condition. An obscure Melbourne fortnightly periodical published between 1972 and 1973, Shalom examined current social topics (the new Global Village, the generation gap, Aboriginal welfare) and deeper philosophical ideas (utopias, freedom, warfare) from what was essentially a humanist perspective, although there are also articles on the Gospels and the history of the Church, and the writing is underpinned by Christian values. It appears that the articles were intended to stimulate classroom discussion. Shalom is scarcely recorded in Australian collections. The National Library of Australia holds three issues of vol. 1 (nos 1; 9; 15) and two issues of vol. 12 (nos 1 ; 12); otherwise, this periodical is not recorded on Trove.
