Description:
New-Haven, CT: Sidney's Press for J. Babcock & Son, 1820. Good. 32mo. (103 x 60 mm). Woocut frontispiece, title-page, alphabet on verso with uppercase roman and italic type, pp. [5]-30 + 1 p. ads for J. Babcock & Son. Contemporary (original?) American "Dutch" gilt floral wrappers, stitched (overcase stitching at a later date), edges of textblock worn, some foxing and browning. Contemporary ownership notes on frontipiece, title, and elsewhere. Too lazy for being a bookseller (!) Well-used American cautionary nautical tales for children, preserved in charming contemporary American "Dutch" gilt floral wrappers. The first tale includes a wayward younger brother who "had been placed in several situations; but, too indolent for labour, and too volatile for application, he had abandoned some, and had been discarded from others. His last employment had been with a BOOK-SELLER, where he was obliged to be more attentive to business than he had been accustomed to. This roused his indignant spirit, and he… Read more

Description:
Paris: Jules Gay, 1863. Hardcover. Very good. 16mo. xv, [1], 56 pp. With 2 engraved plates depicting different models of "ceintures de chastete" i.e. chastity belts (trifle foxed). Bound by [Cyprien] Lhuinte of Grenoble, green half morocco over blue marbled boards (spine a little sunned, extremities slightly worn), top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Highly curious work containing a legal argument against forced use of chastity belts -- unknown to David Murray "Lawyers' Merriments." From the preface (unsigned, but by Gustave Brunet): "There exists few trials as bizarre as this one, and we believe that the case involving Master Freydier remains unparalleled in the annals of legal literature" (translation). THE CASE: Pierre Berlhe (age 36) "seduced" Marie Lajon (age 18), imprisoned her and forced her to wear a chastity belt after she had refused to marry him. She lodged a complaint with the civic authorities, and retained the counsel of Nimes attorney Freydier (his first name is not recorded). The… Read more

Description:
New-London [CT]: Printed by Timothy Green, 1760. 16mo. [2], 118 pp. Collation: A-P4. With the Articles for the Administration of Church Discipline bound in with its own title page and the Timothy Green 1760 imprint, but the pagination and signatures continuous. Bound in contemporary American calf over thin wooden "scaleboard." Spine chipped at the head and the foot; upper corner of the front board broken, some chipping to the other corners; a bit toned and lightly foxed; in good condition. There can be no doubt that this scaleboard binding was made in Connecticut ca. 1760-1763: not only was the book printed in New-London for the exclusive use of Connecticut congregationalists, but the first blank leaf is inscribed: "From the Colony of Connecticut to the Church att Somars [sic] 1763" (i.e. at Somers, CT). It is a remarkable fact that our binding is older than all the Connecticut examples in the Papantonio "Early American Bindings" Collection by more 20 years (the earliest one obtained by him was bound… Read more

Description:
Boston: Printed and Sold by Rogers and Fowle, 1747. Seventh Edition (but First American). Good. Small 8vo. Two volumes in one. [24], 287; [5], 184, [4] pp. Contemporary American tooled calf. Flaw to the title page affecting one word and a small tear to one lower outer corner on leaf E1 with loss of a few words but no loss of sense; in each case, a modern reader has supplied the missing words in neat ballpoint ink. Some light staining or soiling; board edges quite rubbed, with some light cracking or chipping to the spine; later pastedowns. Overall a good copy in the original American binding. Preserved in a cloth protective case. This primitive-looking American binding is datable to ca. 1747-1750, and as such is older than all but five of the 61 bindings reproduced in Papantonio's "Early American Bookbindings." While Papantonio's monograph remains the standard reference work on the subject, it focuses almost exclusively on decorated bookbindings which do not represent the kind of books that Colonial… Read more

Berlin: Verlag Gebr. Mann, 1965. Neubearbeitet. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio, 2 vols. Original blue cloth. Overall in excellent antiquarian condition. This is the indispensable second edition of the catalogue of the greatest Costume book collection ever formed: the text consists of more than 1,166 pages; the items are very well described; and the text is illustrated by 221 black and white illustrations. In their day Franz Joseph and Frieda von Lipperheide were the foremost publishers of fashion journals in the world (e.g. "Die Modenwelt," "Die Dame," "Illustrierte Frauen-Zeitung"). At one point their fashion magazine empire required a staff of more than 400 workers. Franz Joseph von Lipperheide (1838-1906) begin forming his costume collection in about 1870, systematically acquiring primary sources and secondary literature about fashion and traditional costume; civil, professional and religious costumes; weapons and uniforms; masks, dance and theatrical costumes, and much more. Description:
Frankfurt, 1925. Hardcover. Good. Calligraphic manuscript on paper: 10 pages, including an original watercolor by the artist, and bound by her. Written on Flinsche Paper (Frankfurt). Large "modernist" watercolor illustration on first leaf (evidence of deep pencil scratch in outer margin), on the recto a manuscript dedication (dated June 1925) being a six-line poem by Nietzsche entitled "Ecce Homo" (the inscription is signed by "Stefan"). Bound in original beige linen over boards (worn and slightly stained). Overall in good antiquarian condition. An accomplished calligraphic manuscript, presenting a poignant passage from Knut Hamsun's "Pan: from the papers of Lieutenant Thomas Glahn" (Chapter XXIII). The manuscript was written and bound by a young Frankfurt artist who appears to have faded into almost complete obscurity; we believe that the artist was Elisabeth Louise Satori, born in Oberrad (Frankfurt) in 1907. She would have been 18 years of age at the time the present manuscript was written. The… Read more

Following is a catalogue of an Exhibition of Illumination and Decoration in Early Printed Books in the Libraries of the UCLA (41 items described). Altogether the work is illustrated with 26 plates. Tear to gutter margin of last leaf, fore edge uncut. This rare sale catalogue lists a number of significant Dutch and Flemish paintings by such masters as Pieter de Bloot, van der Laan, Isaac van Ostade, Jan Huchtenburg, Jan Horemans, Pieter Nollekens, Cornelis Troost, Dirck Hals, and Aelbert Cuyp, and even David Teniers the Elder. The catalogue, although now unfindable, was certainly important to Hofstende de Groot who cited it no less than twenty times. On paper faintly tinted blue. 78 lots of paintings; only the first 32 priced (in a contemporary hand). Recent sympathetic wrappers. Two Belgian tax stamps to tail margin of fourth page. Small but significant art sale catalogue, of which no copy can be found in the United States. As we learn from the Getty Provenance Index: "The paintings found in the present sale are claimed on the title page of the catalogue to have been the property of a certain "M. Vanderborcht" who was already deceased. He has not been identified, although he might be the print dealer of this name who is listed in the 1810 commercial almanach of Brussels [...] It is noteworthy that "Vander Borght" is recorded as having purchased six paintings at the present sale, one of which, a landscape by Berchem, the first lot in the sale, was apparently bought in. Antwerp: Ce Catalogue se distribue a Anvers Chez A. Grange Imprimeur-Libraire, marche aux oeufs, a deux sols pour les pauvres, 1807. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 8vo; 27 pp. 85 lots of paintings, all priced in contemporary manuscript, plus unpriced lots (108) of scientific instruments. Recent sympathetic wrappers. Title-page has three stains which penetrate blank verso, on which appear two tax stamps; some foxing; last page soiled. Posthumous sale of the small but choice collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings assembled by Frans Emmanuel Ertborn (1716-1791), a wealthy Antwerp businessman who was the first Director of the Prussian East India Company (Emden). Although this collection featured a number of important paintings, it remains surprisingly unknown, and is virtually absent from all reference works consulted by us. Very good. 8vo; 22 pp. + 1 f. (blank), 94 lots of paintings, all but the last 16 lots priced in contemporary manuscript. Fore-edge uncut, slightly ragged, and beginning to curl affecting legibility of a few MS prices. On title-page 1 cm. of outer margin has toned to brown, a few leaves carelessly opened (not affecting text). Our copy does not have the 4-page Supplement which is present in the INHA copy. Recent sympathetic wrappers. Priced copy of the sale catalogue of the relatively small, now very little known collection formed by P.J. Doncker which included no less than thirteen paintings by David Teniers. London: British Museum, 1963. Atlas folio. Together 12 vols. in total: Parts I-X (10 vols). Facsimiles (2 vols). Original boards, cloth spines. Minimal defects to repart, save the back covers of Vols. 1 and 2 are scuffed, that of Vol. VI bumped, stains on front cover of Facs. Vol. 1, otherwise in VERY GOOD condition, the text free from blemish and all markings. NOT ex-library! Excellent copy of the preferred edition, being the 1963 lithographic reprint of the British Museum's OWN WORKING COPY, bearing corrections and additions by none other than Victor Scholderer, a towering incunabulist, and others. "Since the appearance in 1908 of the first volume of BMC the work has been relied on as one of the main authorities on the earliest printing in Europe. Its coverage of early printing from the European countries in which the new technique was successively introduced provides not only extensive bibliographical descriptions, but introduces the material with an analysis of the development of printing in the… Read more
