We found only one auction record, of an incomplete and damp-stained copy sold in 1981. The images include mythological scenes, human facial expressions, human anatomy, landscapes, cattle, shells, flowers and fruits, etc., showing different techniques. Plate 99 is in fact a transfer of a handwritten dedication by Rudolph Ackermann, to Alois Senefelder, "Inventor of the art of lithography". Papers vary in lenght from four to 30 pp. Most papers deal with North American freshwater molluscs (Pleuroceridae, unionids, etc.) but, e.g. also a bi(bli)ography of the American malacologist Bryant Walker. Bound for the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020), with his stamp in the top margin of the front free endpaper. A very good,unique item.

Printed soft cover. = A fine, well-illustrated monograph in the series Fossils & Strata (no. 35) with new genera and species. The "figures" often consist of photographs of many specimens and quite a few have the size of full page plates. The species described are generally very well-preserved. A very good, clean copy of the original publication, not the (on demand?) reprint.

Original printed wrappers. = The general introduction by the leader of the expeditions, the French carcinologist Jacques Forest. There are interesting photographs of the landscapes, the dredging operations and some of the catch, in particular crabs. It includes a complete, detailed list of all the marine stations, and a list of 11 entomological papers based on material collected during the expedition. Published on behalf of the Institut Océanographique in Monte Carlo, in the institute's Annales. A very good, clean copy.

Edges speckled. = A very nice bound copy of the results of these zoological expeditions, consisting of the general introductions by the leader of the expeditions, the French carcinologist Jacques Forest (1920-2012), and with Forest's papers on new and little known Brachyura, prinipally crabs and hermit crabs. There are interesting photographs of the landscapes, the dredging operations and some of the catch, in particular crabs. Also with many maps of the islands, and with detailed drawings of new and rare species of crabs. Published in the series, Contributions to Canadian Palaeontology, volume II(II). Uncut. A very good, clean copy.

Milano, Antonio Vallardi, [1901]. Oblong folio (21.3 x 30.7 cm). Colour-printed pictorial front board and 20 lithographed plates, of which several tinted, or in one or more colours. = A very rare work in Art Nouveau or Jugendstil style, showing a wide variety of designs and letterings, e.g., for menu cards, invitations, book covers, etc. The title translates as "Modern fonts. With examples of artistic and industrial applications". The date is uncertain - one design is dated 1901. Next to nothing is known about the artist, Fortunato Perilla. A 1920 magazine records an exhibition of his works, in particular Tunisian landscape paintings, in Tunis. Antonio Vallardi was a Milanese publishing firm, active from 1843 to the 1970s. Somewhat thumbed and spotted in the lower margin of a few plates; front wrapper edges rather worn, a rear wrapper may have been issued, but is not present. Otherwise a very good copy. Not recorded in Schneider-Henn, Ornament und Dekoration.

A shark is described, but not illustrated. Published as Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India, Palaeontologia Indica, New Series volume 22(7). Inscribed by the author in the top margin of the front wrapper, along a few library markings. Otherwise a very good, clean copy.

In Chinese, with a 42-page summary in English, including the descriptions of new taxa. Stamp on front board and front free endpaper recto, otherwise very good, clean.

Invitation letter to tomorrow's philosophical promotion from the Uppsala University Foundation on the seventy-seventh. By Acting Supervisor Elias Fries". Over 23 pages it contains Linnaeus's philosophies about the divine, and its influence upon his life. These writings were not published during Linnaeus’s lifetime, but given to his son and thought to be lost for over half a century, until the Swedish botanist Elias Magnus Fries (1794-1878) decided to put them into print. The last five pages contain a list of Magistrarnes Namn (Names of the Masters, i.e., alumni of Uppsala University) with ultra-short bibliographies, including subjects and dates of promotion of their theses. Edges speckled red. = This is "a botanical treatise based on the Philosophia Botanica (1751), Genera Plantarum (1737), & Systema Naturae (1748). Very rare, especially with the plates. The British Library has a copy, but without the plates. Manetti's letter accompanying his presentation copy to Linnaeus is in the collections of the Linnean Society of London" (Soulsby, p. 11). Saverio, or Xavier, Manetti (1723-1785) was an Italian naturalist perhaps best known for his grand work on birds, Storia naturale degli uccelli trattata con metodo eadornata di figure intagliate in rame e miniate al naturale. He was a good friend of Linnaeus, and is regarded as the editor of this work, rather than as the writer. Boards a bit rubbed, some light spotting, otherwise a very good copy. Cat.… Read More

Printed surface 48.0 x 34.6 cm. = A fine print, after an original drawing of Linnaeus by his pupil "Hollman" [i.e. Magnus Hallman], and engaved by Bartolozzi (the ornamental garlands and cupids) and Ogburne. First published in 1806 Thornton's The Temple of Flora, as "From the Original Picture in the Possession of Aylmer Bourke Lambert Esq. Vice President of the Linnaean [sic] Society." Slight soiling to margins; a few weak, small spots; otherwise very good. Rare. Soulsby, 3159; Tulberg 145b.

Maps to the second volume in printed portfolio. = A well-illustrated work on Caribbean fisheries, with many photos of seascapes, habitats, research activities, local fisheries (e.g. in the Los Roques archipelago), and of course images of fish species and other marine life, including molluscs and ostracods. Many photos are in full colour. These are the institute's monographs 16 and 27. Dust jacket of the first volume partly stuck to the boards; otherwise a very good, clean and unmarked set.
