Chromolithographic illustrated wrappers, in yellow black and red, and with black and white lettering on the front cover. This scarce work is a Russian translation of the children's fairy tale, Pråmen (The Barge) by Swedish writer Richard Gustafsson (1840-1918), with chromolithographic illustrations by Russian artist Dimitry Mitrohin (1883-1973). The story is told by an animate barge (sailing vessel), recounting its voyages and adventures across the world. All images containing the artist's signature, at the corner. Pages printed on textured paper. A previous…

Leiden: Brill, 2017. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Octavo. xvi, 302pp. Indices and 21 page bibliography. Green over red buckram with color painting on front cover. A fine, as new copy. Remembered as the official who failed to keep Luther in the Catholic fold, Tommaso de Vio, Cardinal Cajetan (1469-1534) was a multi-faceted figure whose significance extends beyond those days in Augsburg. In the 1520s, he embarked on a labour of biblical commentary that occupied the final decade of his life, producing over a million words of translation and commentary. Offering an overview of this remarkable body of work, Michael O'Connor argues that Cajetan's motive was the renewal of Christian living (more 'Catholic Reform' than 'Counter-Reformation'), and that his method was a bold and fresh hybrid of scholasticism and Renaissance humanism, correcting the Vulgate's errors and expounding the text almost exclusively according to the literal sense. Göttingen, Germany: Steidl, 2006. First edition. Softcovers in slipcase. New in publisher's shrink wrap. 1/1500. Square Quarto. Original white softcovers with black lettering on spine in original white slipcase with black lettering on covers. "This is the first Henry Wessel publication by Steidl. From the beginning of the collaboration it was clear that any book must do justice to Wessel's technique of working in series, of creating self-contained photo-stories. The result for Five Books was to create a slipcase housing individual volumes, each dedicated to a particular theme: "California and the West", "Odd Photos", "Las Vegas", "Real Estate Photographs" and "Night Walk"... Five Books representing Wessel's sustained effort to describe the contemporary vernacular landscape of Southern California and the American West. From his early work in the 1970s to his series in Las Vegas of the early 2000s, Wessel's wit and insight illuminate the unusual and iconic in a world rich in nuance, humor and irony.
