First appearance of Mark Twain's "The Canvasser's Tale." The Atlantic Monthly, Volume XXXVIII.--Number 20. December 1876 Back cover missing; fraying to spine and edges light foxed area on lower right of pages but otherwise pages are very clean, some pages uncut (see three photos). Twain began writing for The Atlantic Monthly in 1874. Quite rare as such individual issues were often bound in hardcover collections. Issue also includes an installment of Henry James's "The American" and "Daniel Deronda: A Conversation." A true first printing of a Twain story.
