The work is divided into two parts, each with a separate titlepage but with a continuous pagination. In the first part the author gives a description, in the form of a dialogue, like a guided tour, of the Colliseum of Rome. The second part consists of a short description of some amphitheatres (e.g. Verona in Italy, Nîmes and Doué-la-Fontaine in France, Pula in Croatia etc.). Johannes Lomeier (1636 - 1699), noted Dutch philologist and bibliophile was professor of belles-lettres and philosophy at Zutphen. In the present work, which is his most famous work he writes about the history, architecture and organization of libraries, about librarians and enemies of books. Chapter ten contains a survey of the most important libraries in Europe. In the Netherlands he is especially interested in Zutphen, a town he knew well and which still houses a famous chain library. (Later) blue boards (some light foxing throughout).Thomas Crenius (Brandenburg 1648 - Leiden 1728), whose real name was T.T. Crusius, was an erudite orientalist and philologist. He became a corrector at Leiden and Rotterdam printing houses. In this work, consisting of two 'dissertations', separately published between 1704 and 1708, Crenius discusses plagiarism. Among the authors discussed here are: Grotius, Lipsius, Descartes etc. Brunet II,413 (states 1705 as publication date for the first text). Our first edition contains only the first two essays, the second edition (1716) is expanded with a third.

Koecher (1699-1772) was a lawyer and professor at the University of Jena and also used the pseudonym Gratian Aschpanus.

1770. 's Gravenhage, Isaac Scheltius, 1770 (issued 10 December 1770). Broadsheet with woodcut arms and woodcut initial. On 28 November 1770 Princess Frederika Louise Wilhelmina, daughter of Prince Willem V van Oranje-Nassau and Wilhelmina van Pruisen, was born in The Hague. In this broadsheet it is decreed that the festivities to celebrate this happy event in The Hague and other towns are to be limited as the economic situation is very bad. The money saved should be given to the poor.

First edition of this work by Louis Bollioud de Mermet (1709-1796) that discusses all aspects of bibliomania, the obsessive pursuit of book and compulsive book buying. The term 'bibliomania' was already in use in England in 1734 but the present work is one of the earliest works that use the term. De Bollioud Mermet who was a book collector himself states on page 9: 'En effet, avoir des collections de livres avec l'incapacité ou le défaut de volonté de lire & d'étudier, c'est un étrange manie, une aveugle ostentation. Entasser des amas de volumes sans nécessité, sans discernmenent, c'est une inutilité absurde, une vaine superfluité..." Scarce on the market. [c.f. Brunet VI ('Table'), 1795].

(plates 1 & 6 with old restaurations). Half calf, decorated paper boards (binding rubbed, some waterstaining and foxing). Edges sprinkled red. A copy with large margins. Only edition of a fine work on mosaics by the learned archaeologist Furietti. The first plate depicts the celebrated mosaic of four doves perched on a drinking vessel which the author had discovered at the Villa Adria in 1737 and which Pliny mentions in his Natural History. It is now in the Capitoline Museum. [c.f.Berlin Katalog 3946; Graesse II, 647 (mistakenly indicating 8 plates)]
