The novel depicts many of his contemporaries and friend in impudently thin disguises: Lady Blessington as "Lady Rivington." Joseph Grego says the book was instantly suppressed; but as Sadleir observes, "one is less surprised that it should have been withdrawn than that in 1844 it should have ever been published."
